Emerson Loran Franklin (AKA
Rick Peduzzi) is a new member
of Roatry of Rotary and was invited to
tell our tell us a little about himself
at at today’s meeting, July 12,
1918. Emerson was born in
Wolfville, Nova Scotia but has
been associated with the Ohio
Roger. Public Service Company,
acting as Division Manager here in Warren since 1914. As an
electrical engineer, Emerson is proud to be a part of Warren,
the first city in the United States to enter the “age of
electricity” and light its streets with incandescent bulbs made by
The Packard Electric Company. He is also impressed with the
other subsidiaries that carry the Packard banner, such as
hardware stores, lumbar mills, hotels, and, of course, the first
Packard Motor Car. In addition to his vocation, Emerson, or
“Ben” as he is known to his friends, has been committed to public
service through affiliations with the Boy Scout Council and the
Chamber of Commerce. Sounds like he’d make a great Rotary
Club President one day!
Our new Rotary International President, Ian Riseley from
Australia, has challenged every Rotary Club to plant one tree for
each of its members. However, our Club will be taking this
project a step further and planting 100 trees in commemoration
of our Centennial! Bob Hoy, Chair of this project, plans to
obtain our trees from the Trumbull County Soil and Water
Conservation District. Stay tuned for more information about
planting locations and other details.

Rotary Club of Warren CENTENNIAL LOGO
Several members have asked for a recap of the meaning
behind our Centennial Logo. In honor of the rich history of
the Rotary Club of Warren, embedded in our Centennial Logo
are eight images representing the city of Warren, former
Warren Rotarians along with their professions, and several of
our club’s early accomplishments.
The overall image is a silhouette of the Trumbull County
Courthouse, an icon for the city of Warren. Starting at the
top of the logo, a triangle represents the YMCA, an
organization the Rotary Club of Warren was instrumental in
bringing to the city. Below that is a double bubbler, a water
fountain spout that was the invention of Warren Rotarian
Halsey W. Taylor. Continuing vertically, next is a piano
keyboard which represents Lynn B. Dana who succeeded his
father, the founder of the Dana Musical Institute. Directly
below the keyboard are two mittens representing Children’s
Rehabilitation Center, which was originally the Halsey Taylor
Rehabilitation Center founded by the Trumbull County Society
for Crippled Children, a facility that the Rotary Club of
Warren helped to create. An outline of a classic steel mill,
representing many past club members’ vocations, sits atop the
grille of a Packard automobile in homage to the Packard
brothers of Warren. To the left of the grille is a

SCOPE SENIOR SERVICES
OF
TRUMBULL COUNTY
One of the most
enjoyable parts of
Rotary for me has been
the opportunity to learn
more about my work
community. We have
been treated to some
wonderful programs, and
today’s speakers did not
disappoint! Mike Wilson, Director of SCOPE Senior Services,
has been a part of the non-profit world for the last 30
years. He indicated that his dream job was to protect
seniors and help them become more independent, because

Today, research shows that seniors who remain active live longer,
healthier lives. Today, 4,000 individuals are served by the
six SCOPE centers in Northeast Ohio. The Warren center’s
focuses on sup focus is to offer supportive and fun services to elderly and
disabled individuals. Their 2017 theme is “Off Our Rockers”!
Dave Raach oversees SCOPE’s
Protective Services Program in
Sim Warren, assisting clients with
paying bills and preventing
and protecting exploitation. Dave indicated
that close contacts and
collaboration make a significant
difference difference in this area. Most
of the individuals of the individuals that he sees
live on less than $750 per month, and referrals to agencies
for assistance with food stamps, utility funding, filing taxes
and other Fiona and other financial needs are critical.
Debbie Zader also
wants to build bridges
for seniors who have
difficulty maneuvering
through the medical
system. She sees
her job of helping
individuals obtain
their prescription medications, get free health checks,
access transition to Medicare, and overcome addiction and other
medical issues as a “labor of love”.
Kim Hoase shared
some very impressive data
about SCOPE’s “Traveling
Pantry”. In collaboration
with the Warren Family
Mission and Second Harvest
Food Bank, about 10,000
pounds of groceries are
delivered to the homebound
and shut-ins twice a month.
SCOPE also provides SCOPE also provides tasty and nutritious lunches in their café.
