Ophthalmology Department – Jaffna Hospital Sri Lanka

International Project Delivers the eye care services to around 650,000 people

Referral centre for all Northern Province Districts. (NP population is around 1.3 million)

There are only 2 eye surgeons in NP- attached Jaffna.

Develop a good eye care network system in North.

The hospital is short of the following equipment’s

YAG laser (Zesis)

A & B scan with Pachymetry (3 in 1) (NIDEK)

Auto refactor with Keratometry (Topcon)

Portable Keratometry (NIDEK)

Slit-lamp (Topcon)

Ophthalmology Department – Jaffna Hospital Sri Lanka

ResultWithin one month of the installation of the new equipment’s, 135 patients were operated

The transfer to other hospitals such as Anuradapura, Colombo & Kandy, has been reduced by 100%.

“It was very heartening to note that 75 operations have been performed in just 3 weeks, in the newly equipped Eye Hospital in Jaffna.” – Dr Malaravan

The donors from Australia in particular will be delighted to hear this news.

Funding of medical equipment for Arayampathy Hospital

HeadManmunai Pattu divisional secretariat area.

This is the district hospital.

About 10km from Batticoloa Teaching Hospital.

6 doctors are working at this district hospital.

A population of 32000 people depend of this hospital for their medical needs.

The Out Patient Department (OPD) and medical, paediatric and obstetrics clinic are functioning at it’s best with available facilities.

The rest of the patients are usually transferred to Batticoloa Teaching Hospital.

Why do we need to support this hospital?

Local Community•The income distribution of the population of Manmunai Pattu divisional secretariat area is as below:

• 45% of the population earns less than SL Rupees of 500 Rupees• Batticoloa Teaching Hospital is 10KMs from this district hospital,

the community cannot afford the cost of travel, as such life’s are put at risk.

• In addition to this transport between the two regions is lacking. Thus there is a huge need for the provision of medical services within this region.

• There has been no major development since the war ended and only 6 doctors work at the Arayampathy Hospital.

• The biggest need at this neglected hospital is to re-establish the morgue by repairing the dilapidated morgue and its refrigeration system.

• They cannot keep any dead bodies due to lack of cooling system.

Why do we need to support this hospital?

• The bodies are either left to decay or send to Batticoloa Teaching Hospital if there is any post-mortem examination.

• This can cause disease to general public and is an additional problem to the hospital and environment.

• Due to unavailability of cooler the public face enormous difficulties in performing certain formalities and need to pay more money to preserve the bodies in private funeral parlours.

• It has also be highlighted that the access to the Mortuary is difficult, and long narrow passage with bush and shrubs. It is not easy to transfer the bodies to morgue because hospital beds cannot go through the passage. This passage needs a better access as well.

What is needed urgently?

• Following medical equipment’s are urgently required and will enable the doctors to deliver acute and critical care of local patients, and stabilise them prior to transfer to the main hospital.

• We estimate the project to cost in the vicinity of AUD $125,000 (USD $110,000 )

• We have a pledge from the Australian Medical Aid Foundation for financial contribution of AUD $35,000 (USD $30,000) towards this project
