Ironman 5-7 Februaryby Rod Morrison

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU: Geelong 70.3 Ironman Triathlon is on again (5-7 February)andClub members are needed to assist with registration (Saturday 6th Feb), run and bike marshals (Sunday 7th) as well as barbecue duties from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to assist with the event as well as earn a fee on a 'per volunteer' basis for the Club. When you add to this to BBQ sales, this is a golden opportunity for our Club to raise substantial funds, while at the same time enjoying fellowship and beingpart of a World Series race attracting over 1,200 triathletes plus their supporters.

While many of you have filled out forms left on the tables at our meetings, here's another opportunity to experiment with volunteering online. It's easy...

1. go to the club's webpage: http://www.hightonrotary.com

2. go to UPCOMING EVENTS, on the right hand side and you'll see IRONMAN TRIATHLON EASTERN BEACH. Click on this link

3. You'll then see REGISTER ONLINE then click on VOLUNTEERING

4. You'll see a listing where you can click on BOOK and register yourself or a friend/family.

If you need any further information please contact Rod Morrison.

Contact Pauline or Rhonda if you'd like assistance to register online.

Go for it.

For more info about the event check out: http://www.ironmanoz703.com/ironmanoz703/raceweekend.htm

Rotary's response to Haitiby Rhonda Whitton

Here is a synopsis of Rotary's response to the earthquaketragedy in Haiti. On Tuesday 12 January a 7.0 magnitude earthquake

struck Haiti. A Haiti government minister says the death toll from thecountry's devastating earthquake has now topped 150,000 in the capitalPort-au-Prince alone. A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is currently being mobilised to Haitiwith two members from the USA and one from the UK leading theresponse. ShelterBox UK General Manager Lasse Petersen said: 'We're doingeverything we can to ensure immediate aid reaches the people of Haiti. The process of getting our team on the ground is well under way. 'We were in Haiti eighteen months ago, delivering aid after a series ofhurricanes left thousands homeless. We'll now be working closely with ourcontacts on the ground in the country to make sure we get aid to thepeople who need it most during the current crisis. Our thoughts go out tothe people who have been affected by this disaster.' With such a pressing need for emergency shelter provision, ShelterBox isdispatching 700 ShelterBoxes with even more to be packed. ShelterBox isusing all resources available to make sure immediate aid reaches Haiti. ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: 'Our team around the world isdoing all they can to ensure aid reaches the people of Haiti as soon aspossible. With each day the need grows and we're doing all we can to gethelp to the thousands of families affected by this tragedy. 'The responsefrom our volunteers and supporters has once again been sensational. Wecan't do this without the public's compassion and generosity.'

Torquay Golf Dayby Rhonda Whitton

Even non-golfers would have been tempted to find out just what a "9 hole Ambrose with a kick", plus "a Shotgun Start" is after President Greg's (RC Torquay) convincing speil last week.

Greg stressed that the day was definately a 'fun' event and that the RC Highton members were welcome to play. Groups of 4 are needed to play

Next year's committeesby Paul Brewster

The composition of our Club's committees is enormously important and the continued success of our club relies on having the right people working together as a team.

Putting the teams together takes time, so we're starting now.

You will soon receive by email (or hard copy if you receive a hard copy of the bulletin) a list of positions and committees. Please complete the form by putting the numbers 1 to 3 in order against your 3 preferences for participation.

Of course we can't guarantee to give everyone exactly what they want, but at least it's a starting point.

If you have no preference and are happy to accept anything we allocate, please say so in the comments space at the end of the form. If there's some position you would absolutely refuse, please put that also in the comments space.

Please email the completed forms to Paul or hand them in at a dinner meeting on or before 18th February.

Many thanks

Paul

2010/11 theme and logoby Rhonda Whitton

At the recent International Assembly in San Diego, RIPresident-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the RItheme for 2010-2011 – "Building CommunitiesBridging Continents".

He chose the theme to resonate with Rotarians and to reinforce the work Rotarians do in their communities and around the world. He also chose the theme to appeal to those outside of Rotary to help them understand the work Rotarians do and the value they create.

President-elect Ray encouraged Rotarians to renew their commitment to the future of Rotary, to review the traditions of the past and in so doing create new traditions.

Additional information about the theme, and the logo are now available from the RI website at www.rotary.org.

Quotable quoteby Rhonda Whitton

While this quote by Winston Churchill might sound a bit corny, it does sum up Rotary's philosophy: "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
