Past President Troy Bird, our Speaker Chair, recruited Sacramento attorney Michael Hackard to speak to our Club regarding elder abuse. Michael is the author of the authoritative book on elder abuse, The Wolf at the Door. His book discusses the physical and financial abuse of people 65 years and older. Michael's passion for defending against elder abuse started in 1989 when he discovered that his aunt's caregiver had convinced his Aunt Veronica to make her the major beneficiary of his Aunt's estate. Thirty years later Michael is a nationally recognized authority on the subject of elder abuse.

Currently there are 69,000,000 Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, in the United States and 10,000 Boomers turn 65 every day! There is more than enough opportunity for unscrupulous predators to take advantage of a vulnerable senior. Legally any property received by undue influence is an unlawful act. There are a number of ways that a family can protect against elder abuse of a senior family member.

- Do not allow a senior to become isolated. - Have all legal documents up to date and make sure that trusted family members know their intention. - Make sure that you know where legal documents are located. - Monitor the health and care of the senior. - Avoid the opportunities for the senior to be scammed.

Michael made everyone aware that we need to keep a vigilant eye on all the vulnerable seniors in our lives. He offered everyone in our Club a free copy of his book. Please contact Troy if you would like a copy of The Wolf at the Door.

Dear Mighty Club,

Last Tuesday night, an apartment fire occurred where Pedro Cisneros lives. The fire destroyed Pedro's apartment and he was able to get out with only the clothes on his back. Working with the Centennial Club, we would like to help in Pedro's recov-ery. The Club will be accepting donations on his behalf.

Opening Remarks From Friday’s Meeting Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in National Doughnut or Donut Day, celebrating the doughnut and honoring the Salvation Army Lassies. The Salvation Army Lassies are the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home-cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops. The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.” A more standard spelling of the word is “donut.”

Celebrate the day by enjoying your favorite doughnut.

I am Peter Anderson and it is days like these that make me proud to be the 71st President of the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento!
