Welcome to Jerash

The ancient city of Jerash dates back more than 6500 years. The ruins, which were hidden for centuries by sand, were rediscovered 70 years ago. The excavation still continues today. Its Greco-Roman architecture attracts people from all around the world. I went to Jerash with Tony and Sasha, two other Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars, during my first month. Because we arrived early in the morning, we were the only ones there. The silence and the early light made the atmosphere seem almost spiritual as we walked through the ancient colonnaded streets and climbed staircases in the amphitheater to see over the city.

Ajlun CastleSasha, Tony, and I continued our Journey through Northern Jordan to Ajlun. The Ajlun Castle was built in 1184 AD to control the iron mines of the area. It also dominated the main routes leading to the Jordan Valley and protected communication between Jordan and Syria at the time of the Crusaders. From the top of the castle, we could see for miles. Umm QaysWe finished our day trip in Umm Qays, site of the miracle of the Gadarene swine and once home to classical poets and philosophers. The city was a cultural center in the Roman empire, called a new Athens. It overlooks the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee, one of the best sights Ive visited in Jordan. We walked as far as we could, passed the ruins of the city, to look over the Sea of Galilee. We were the only ones who went this far for the view. We spent time talking and taking in the beauty.
