President Nigel welcomed new prospective member - guest Jarrod Boys to the meeting.

The Change-over dinner will be at the Burnie Club on Saturday June 30th . (7.00 for 7.30 pm) Cost will be $55per person.

Tues 25th June is World Phamacist’s Day. We have been asked to hold a BBQ at Bunning’s. We need 2 or 3 helpers maybe for about 4 hours. UTAS is organising the day and profits will go to Burnie Rotary. UTAS students will be taking blood pressure checks.

tree planting on the 30th June at 12 – 4pm.

Nigel picked up new X Boxes from Harvey Norman (to replace old ones) for kids

at the Pediatrics Department of the Hospital

“Life as a Pediatrition - 16⁰ North to 41⁰ South”

Roopa was born Kolhapur, India. In 1951 it was a city of 140,000 - now more than half a million people and famous for leatherwork and many other handcrafts.

Roopa’s life experiences were fascinating.

Indian Paediatrics

Year 1 Paediatric Post

Crowed Emergency Department 8 year old boy Fever, lethargy Unresponsive Examination, Paracetamol for fever Went to attend severely dehydrated child Mother kept crying and calling us back Kept saying her boy was dying

Guess what, he died within 4 hours

Lesson No: 1 - Always listen to the parent! They know their child well

A baby with spasms

7 day old baby Brought in with fever and seizures Asked the nurse to get Lumber Puncture ready Wife of the boss was around What are you doing? Doctor ‘this is Tetanus, does not need LP

People of all ages can get tetanus. Particularly common and serious in newborn babies. This is called neonatal

tetanus. Most infants who get the disease die. Vaccination offers almost 100% protection As of February 2017, 18 countries remain that have not eliminated MNT.

To the UK, 55⁰ North

As long as I can remember I wanted to go to the UK for higher education Not easy 35 years ago before the days of internet In entire Kolhapur we knew only 2 doctors who were in the UK Wrote to GMC, snail mail Whatever could go wrong went wrong! On the day of departure my mother got severe asthma attack, what if I became

alcoholic?? Officially you could take only $500 (US) Against all the odds got everything sorted and arrived at YMCA near London,

Euston – Mar 1983 I had date for PLAB test in one week ‘What would you do if you failed’? No plan B…!

I have not failed any exam so far, I am not going to fail this one; it worked!!

5 yrs - Junior Doctor in the UK

A lot to learn; new country, culture, the weather Hard life, 1:2 on calls, the best rota was 1:3 Language difficulty, especially on the phone Lot of doctors of Indian origin Learnt to drive, passed driving test 1st attempt Did exams one after other, DCH(Lon), MRCP(UK) My own car, travelling, camping, hiking, locums Freedom with capital F! This was truly ‘a dream come true’

Desert and Red Sea

1988 – Saudi Arabia; my share of oil revenue! Save some money to start my practice in India Thought would be there for 3 years Thought it would be like being in a prison Ended up staying for almost 8 years Got married, Manisha was born in Tabuk Learnt to dive, camping on Red Sea beach Unexpectedly rewarding time of my life!

Doctor who brings back dead babies

Saudis liked to have lots of children They did not like Caesarean section operations Husband or a male relative had to give consent Lots of babies were born with birth asphyxia Neonatal resuscitations were very common ET intubation, IPPV, dead looking baby alive and kicking in 10 minutes! Saving lives is addictive and very rewarding Many such baby girls were named Roopa!!

1995 – Ryan was born Consultant Paediatrician at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital Right place at right time Dearly missed professional life in Saudi Missed the buzz, the excitement, hands on work Slowly settled in NHS consultant role Developed in other areas than frontline clinician

Don’t always listen to a parent!

Heartlands is a giant! Inner city hospital in a poor socio economic area 40+ beds Paediatric ward, (8) 6800 high risk deliveries per year (900) Child abuse was not uncommon Witnessed some heartrending cases of child abuse, physical and sexual You definitely don’t always listen to the parent

Baptism by fire

My first weekend on call at NWRH Burnie 5am Saturday, call from switchboard You are needed urgently in maternity A good size baby; pale, limp, not breathing For all practical purposes dead, but heart beating weakly -15 minutes old Non invasive method to get oxygen in baby did not work.

ET tube, oxygen in lungs, improved immediately

Woman of the world!

connect to another human being is liberating Economic independence gave me autonomy, mobility, immunity from

oppression and ultimately true freedom Home is where I am! ‘Education’ has been my key for ‘Liberation’
