Blast from the past - the year 2009- 2010 I have followed Past President Alan White in the continued implementation of the Club Leadership Plan. The continuity of office bearers is one of the obvious benefits of the CLP. We no longer have to reinvent the wheel each year. Directors and Chairman can see the development and completion of their projects through our long term planning.

This year, the focus of the Club has shifted after the devastating bushfires in February. The Club has been called on in many ways to assist in the renewal programs. We have been involved in the family days for Strathewen, St. Andrews and Panton Hills. We have provided a free BBQ for the local residents on these days and there has been much appreciation from them and from the Nillumbik Shire Council in that the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek was presented with a “Nillumbik Community Group of the Year 2010” award for our significant contributions during and after the bushfires. The Administration of the RCDC Bush Fire Fund will be ongoing for a while longer.

We lost a charter member with Bob Eycken transferring to the Rotary Club of Mansfield which is closer to Bob & Ginnette’s home base. We wish Bob all the best in his new club.

The BBQ at Mitre 10 on the last Saturday of the month is very successful. Not only has this been a fund raising event, it has raised the awareness of Rotary in the local community and hopefully assist in new membership. The Pride of Workmanship awards were, once again, a very successful project that had its culmination on the 15th June with the presentation of awards to three very worthy applicants. I hope this will continue on an annual basis.

I have followed on with Alan’s “Where we are at” with a “What have we done – Where are we Going” which has been updated throughout the year to be a running summary of our activities and achievements.

Reflec ng upon some of the successful ac vi es which have taken place over the past months and many which are taking place now, they all have one thing in common – a number of our members have taken the ini a ve, used their resourcefulness, and run with a project. It is something that we find in common amongst Rotarians – the majority have a sense of enterprise and inven veness. Rotary is not just an organisa on where we go to dinner once a week, nor is it something that one joins “to have fun” (even though many of the ac vi es and fellowship can lead to just that), essen ally the reason most people do join is that they want to undertake beneficial work for the community. Members are showing their ini a ve because they have been encouraged to run with a project, and ul mately they are gaining great sa sfac on from seeing it succeed. Most of our members like challenges – they are not the kind of people who are content to sit back and do things the same old way. They like new innova ons and they like to see improvements. Just look at the Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair – each year there are new developments, fresh ideas and different events. Our Town Fair Commi ee is inspired by its success, just as the community are inspired by the changes each year. So let us take these a ributes and use them even more extensively within the club. Not all members are involved in running projects or even working within them. It would be great to see every member use their ini a ve to step forward and give Diamond Creek an even greater edge. Don’t sit back and allow others to do all the work or come up with the ideas. What area of service in Rotary is your passion? Is there something in the

community or interna onally that you would like to see happen? Bring your ideas to the fore, speak to me or to Alan White (Service Projects Director) and see how we can implement it. Get involved with one of our exis ng projects. Does your interest sit in the interna onal scene? Then get involved with our new sister club in Nepal or assist on the Shelter Box sub‐commi ee. Would you like to help with ac vi es for senior members of our community? So, perhaps you can get involved with the Men’s Shed or help with the establishment of the new Probus Club in Doreen. If you are interested in literacy, get involved with Jacqui’s working group. The list goes on and on. There are far too many things to list them all here. How else can we use a ributes of ini a ve and success? The club needs new members who have these quali es and characteris cs. Think about your daily life outside of Rotary. All of us know people who have these traits. They are people who have used their ini a ve to develop a successful business or worked relessly for a voluntary project. Invite them to come and join us. They are exactly the kind of new members we need. Alan Jones

Swimming Bramham first represented Australia on the

international stage in 2004. 4] His highest

international ranking ever is number one.

4] He is coached by Matt Byrne of the

Tritons Swimming Club. 3] In 2000, he

competed at the Pacific School Games.In

2006, he competed in the World

Championships in Berlin, Germany where

he set a world record and won a gold

medal. To Bramah's disappointment, four

months before the start of the 2006

Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne,

Victoria, the games announced they would

not include Elite Athletes with Disability

butterfly swim on the event schedule. 3] To

qualify for the Commonwealth Games, he

switched to and qualified to compete in the

100m freestyle.

In 2011, he competed in the Can-Am

Swimming Open, where he earned gold

medals in two events: S9 100m freestyle

and 50m and 100m butterfly.

Paralympics Bramham was one of the youngest

Australian competitors at the 2004

Paralympics. He earned a bronze medal in

the first Games he competed at in the

Men's 4x100 m Medley 34 event. He

broke a world record in Athens during one

of the heats for the 100m butterfly event.

He won a gold medal at the 2004 Athens

Games in the Men's 100 m

Butterfly S9 event, a gold medal in the

Men's 4x100 m Medley 34 pts event and a

silver medal in the Men's 4x100 m

Freestyle 34 pts event. He won a gold

medal at the 2008 Beijing Games in the

Men's 100 m Butterfly S9 event, a gold

medal in the Men's 4x100 m Medley 34 pts

event and a silver medal in the Men's

4x100 m Freestyle 34 pts event.

Recognition In 2009, Bramham received the Medal of

the Order of Australia "For service to sport

as a gold medallist at the Beijing 2008

Personal

Bramham tells several stories about

how he lost his leg. One story involves

his leg being eaten off by an alligator. Another story is that a shark

attacked him. A third story, one

he often tells international

journalists, involves his leg

being "chomped off by a

kangaroo". The reality is

that he was born missing

part of his limb: he has no

femur. What remained of

his leg was amputated when

he was five years old.

Bramham was born on 23 May

1988 and is from Ivanhoe, Victoria.

One of his heroes is Geoff Huegill.

Outside of swimming, he competes

at water polo, Australian rules

football and rugby union.

Amongst these sports, rugby

union was his preferred sport,

and he played it at school

until the school removed

him from the team,

citing concerns that his

prosthetic leg may

potentially injure his team

mates and opposing players.

Not being able to play

his first choice sport

was one of the reasons

he got involved with swimming.

Bramham and a

friend were briefly

jailed by the

Merimbula Police

after pretending,

with assistance

from McDonald's

ketchup, that a shark attacked them. They were

released after apologising to the police. 4]

what happened last week ?

Sergeant Rob introduced President Alan.

President Alan announced that it was the 1st nite of Literacy Month. Alan thanks Jackie Hodge for her efforts in organising a Literacy nite.

John Egan presented the Rotary Grace. Bev Baker introduced the Toast.

Alan White introduced the guests, Bea (Youth Exchange Student) Sue (friend of Jackie's) and Leigh Marshall (Men's Shed). Apologies were read out.

Make-ups were Rob Lloyd visited RC Southern Mitchell and RC Kinglake Ranges. Participants in the PETS weekend were Steve Crosling, Rob Lloyd, John & Eileen Gatt, and Pat Millar.

President Alan read out a letter received from the Diamond Creek Primary School thanking the club for the Sun Shade (Sails) the were erected at the school to give the students some shade outside the class rooms. This is another project made possible from the funds raised at the Town Fair.

Tomorrow night (7th Mar) is a special outing to the Eltham Little Theatre to try on costumes representing the period of the Ballarat Goldfields for the presentation at Conference advertising the Conference for the following year in Ballarat, being organised by Diamond Creek, with dinner afterwards.

Ern gave a report on the progress of the formation of a Probus Club. Geoff Swan reported on the Mystery Weekend Trip on the 16 & 17th June, 2012. He has managed to keep the costs at $200.00pp. Deposit of $100 has been requested at next week's meeting - 13th March.

Our guest speaker for the night was a telephone hook-up with Jackie's daughter Natalie who is currently in Spain on a Literacy Program. Was very interesting, albeit a little hard to understand at time.

Discussion on "Wall of Hands" as a Town Fair presentation. What Literacy Projects could the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek support. Watch this space.

Bea presented a little about herself and her country in a power-point presentation. Rob remarked to Bea that he had noticed a marked difference in her English, even though she has only been here for 2 weeks.
