Well, what a year it has been! When Alan took on the role of President, I had no idea what a full year it would be - for both of us. He has always had the belief that partners and family members have a great deal to offer Rotary and that their participation will give the club greater strength and diversity. Looking back on the past twelve months I certainly agree with him. Taking on the role of President requires commitment and a lot of hard work. Without support for this at home, it would be very difficult to do a good job. This year it has been my choice to be involved. But, like many Rotarians, I can honestly say that I have got far more out of this involvement than I what I have put in. So what have I got out of the year? Friendships; warmth and caring; a strengthening of our relationship; satisfaction; increased skills, and achievement to name but a few things. I believe that I have made some good friendships through this organisation. Hopefully those friendships are not exclusive to Rotary but ones which will last for many years to come. I have met many interesting people and broadened my knowledge through those encounters. Warmth and care may seem a strange thing to say, but in the time that Alan and I have been involved, two wonderful young people came into our lives through the Ambassadorial Scholar Program. These relationships have been the highpoint of my involvement in Rotary and Pierre and his family and Mariko have brought much love and enjoyment and to our lives.

I have tried to learn as much as I could about Rotary and in many respects being involved in the club activities has strengthened our relationship. To quote District Governor David Anderson, Alan is a “full on” President and being able to discuss ideas with him and to listen to his thoughts has made me feel involved as well. Rotary is an amazing organisation and the projects that they undertake are quite remarkable. To see the good that this organisation does both on a local and a global scale and to know that one has made a contribution, no matter how small, is extremely gratifying. Having been involved in another organisation in the past, I always enjoyed organising fundraising dinners and functions, and I have certainly been able to put these skills to good use. It has been really enjoyable to work with others in the club whether we were putting together the catering for a social function or organising a larger event. To be totally practical, working with our talented editor has certainly increased my computer skills too. Reward for achievement is very special as well. The culmination of a year of hard work and dedication in many projects has seen the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek receive the Changemaker Award. Having been involved in putting together the documentation for this and seeing the enormous contribution made by many members of this club, has made me very proud. I can only recommend to any partner to take an active role, get involved and you really will be rewarded. Kerry Jones

Under the spotlight

Kerry Jones

What’s one thing most people would be surprised to know about you?

I have always been a daydreamer!

What’s the smartest thing you’ve been told? Anything is possible if only you believe.

How would someone you love describe you?

Alan says that I am loyal to my friends and very supportive to them. I am giving, caring and soft-hearted. But if I am hurt, the hurt will remain with me for a long time.

What’s the oldest item in your wardrobe that you still wear?

I love new clothes, but I am still wearing a lot of my corporate clothes that I wore to work. They must be at least a year old!

What do you look or feel really good in? Formal wear.

What’s one simple thing you’re really good at? Writing and Arts and Crafts.

What do you least like to do?

Anything where I am out of my comfort zone – camping, skiing or water sports.

What’s the one talent you wish you had? Musical ability – to sing or play a musical instrument.

One thing you refuse to eat? Beetroot.

I’m glad I .... left work and am able to pursue some other interests.

What was your best break in life? Leaving Secondary Teaching to pursue other career options.

What was your happiest birthday party?

I am not a Party Girl. Alan has been threatened that he must never organise a surprise party for me.

Who’s your most memorable character?

There are a handful of kids who I taught who I will never forget even though its 20 years ago – they made a huge impact on me at the time and were very special.

Currently, you are reading what ?

I love reading and always have my head in a book – fact or fiction. I am currently reading The Memory Tree by Tess Evans. Tess is a local author and was my boss when I was working at NMIT.

If you were an animal what would you be ?

A panda – I just love them! They are cute and cuddly and it would be nice to sit around all day and eat (not necessarily bamboo).

Are you a dog or a cat person?

Definitely a cat person as they are independent and intelligent. Just ask our cat Buckley!

I told you he knew what he was doing !

Geoff Swann spoke about the Mystery Week-end

“Christmas in June”, saying it was all ready to go. He advised for us to pack for cold weather.

Chairman John Gatt introduced Greg Paull for the Rotarian Behind the Badge. Greg heard about Rotary through his mother who exhibited her paintings through Rotary Art Shows.

Greg lives on 16 acres with sheep, chooks goats, and bees, as has an interest in Apiary. In 1986 he was accepted to be an exchange student to Japan, during which time he felt very much alone, especially with the differences in culture.

He studied accountancy with Swinburne and was accepted at the BP refinery in Brisbane. In 1992 he went to NZ with BP then to Greece to establish new accounting systems. His family re-established in St Albans, London as a base and he travelled over Europe working for BP. He was asked to run all the global systems in Europe for BP and had 50 people under him.Y2k was a big issue at the time and he worked hard to prevent disaster.

Greg ended up converting old computer systems to new technology for BP with 150 people under him and at the same time found himself losing interest in the job. September 11 decided him to put his family first.

BP retrained him in construction. Now a builder, has his own company, Transform homes,

His passion in life is skiing, and apiary. He wanted by be invited to Rotary but Rotary was “invisible." His experience as an exchange student set him up for life.

There will be no Rotary next Tuesday night.

Media release

Probus comes to Doreen

Probus has been eagerly welcomed to Doreen. Over 85 local residents joined the new Doreen Combined Probus Club at their Charter Meeting on Wednesday 6th June. Seeing a need for a leisure activity for active retirees in the area, the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek started the groundwork in April and they have been delighted with the enthusiastic response that they have received.

It was the role of Past President Ern Wardell to oversee the setup of the new club which he envisages will go from strength to strength. The Foundation President, John Powell, was inducted by Alan Jones, the President of the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek.

Already the new club has a number of activities planned for the members.

Probus is for active retirees who enjoy fun and fellowship.

The Doreen Combined Probus Club will meet on the first Wednesday of every month at the Laurimar Community Centre, corner of Hazel Glen Drive and Brookwood Avenue, Doreen commencing at 1.30pm. For enquiries phone John Powell 9436 5356.

Tess Evans' first novel, Book of Lost Threads, made it to the bestseller list when it was published by Allen & Unwin in 2010. It was short-listed for the 2011 Indie Awards in the Debut Fiction section and has been nominated for the 2012 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Tess' second novel, The Memory Tree, was published by Allen & Unwin in March 2012.

Tess worked for many years in the TAFE system, as a teacher and manager. During her time at TAFE she taught and counselled a wide range of people: youth at risk, migrants, indigenous trainees, apprentices, sole parents and unemployed workers of all ages and from all professions. She has drawn upon this rich experience in her writing.

Tess was raised in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill and now live among the trees in Eltham. Tess is married with three grown children and four grandchildren. Tess loves to travel, with the most intense experiences being walking the Inca Trail and riding a camel in the Sahara desert.

Guest speaker tonight is Tess Evans

Please make her welcome
