Intake silencers effectively reduce the noise anddestructive low frequency pulsations that can bedetrimental to surrounding equipment and person-nel, as well as neighbors. The noise and/or pulsa-tion energy generated at the blower inlet is afunction of both blower speed and blower size.

It is an established fact that the smaller sizeblowers do not develop destructive low frequencypulses, whereas larger blowers do. To properly elim-inate these destructive pulsations, a chamber typesilencer with a minimum volume of 12 to 15 timesthe blower displacement is required. This parameterhas been incorporated in all application recommen-dations employing chamber type intake silencers.

Blower speed plays an important part in thecorrect selection of a silencer. For slow speed

blowers, the chamber type silencer performs beston all sizes. For applications not requiring thisdegree of silencing on small size blowers, theabsorption type silencer has been used successfullyfor many years.

For high-speed blowers (i.e., blowers with operatingspeeds above the transition speed) a chamber-absorption type silencer is required. This combina-tion design is necessary to reduce the increasedhigh frequency noise energy that is developedabove the transition speed and also effectively treatthe energy contained in the low frequencies.

Normally acceptable inlet silencer pressure dropis in the range of 3 to 8 inches of water. Allinlet silencers will meet this criteria if properlysized in accordance with this bulletin.

Discharge silencers are essential to good systemperformance on all rotary blower systems. The belief that the discharge creates less noise than the inlet is erroneous because the discharge pulsations and noise are normally contained in a closed system.The rotary positive blower does not compress the air as it moves from the blower inlet to the blower discharge. Compression takes place whenline pressure backs up into the open port — thuscompressed air is then pushed out into the line. This action takes place in a very short period of time and produces steep wave forms that can bedestructive to piping and other equipment unlessproperly treated.Blower displacement and speed are the major

parameters in designing discharge silencers thatperform their assigned function and will live throughout the useful life of the blower. Normally for good silencing the discharge silencer shouldhave an internal volume to blower displacement ratio of 18 to 1.Blower speed dictates the model used. When theblower speed is below the transition speed the multi-chamber type is recommended to properlytreat the noise emitted from the blower discharge.When the blower speed is above the transitionspeed, the intensity of the high frequencies isincreased, requiring a modified design incorporat-ing acoustic materials to absorb these frequencies.Normally acceptable discharge silencer pressuredrop is in the range of 3 to 12 inches of water.

The silencers are of a multi-chamber design containing a high frequencyabsorption section in addition to a special arrangement of volumes and air passageways to effectively reduce bothpulsations and high frequencies.

ConstructionAll welded steel and plate construction for long service life. Acoustic material temperature rating shall not exceed300°F. Intake and discharge flanges are drilled to match 125 ASA flanges. The blower flange connections aredrilled and tapped to match blower flanges or flexible connectors. Blower base, motor base, mounting bracketsand fork lift channels are included as integral parts of the silencer package. Blower and Motor Slide Rails are notincluded with silencer bases. Special designs, relief valve connections and drilling of flanges are available upon request.

PD13

The PD13 is a premium discharge silencer for blowers operatingbelow transition speed, on which the blower, motor and belt guardare mounted as an integral part of the silencer. The PD13 isdesigned to facilitate package assembly, thereby reducing labor andthe overall costs of assembling smaller blower packages. The designalso enables the package to be pretested and shipped to the jobsitewithout any disassembly.The PD13 incorporates all the benefits of the D13H series silencerseen in Bulletin “D”. The inlet is designed to accept a slip-on flexconnector. When provided with dimensional data for mounting theblower and motor STODDARD SILENCERS will pre-drill up to twelve(12) holes in the base plate of the PD13 at an additional cost.Blowers, motors, slide rails, drive assemblies and any necessarycontrols are not included; however, an intake filter silencer, intakesilencer with support, flex connectors and belt guard are available aspart of PD13 Packages “A”, “B” and “C”. (Contact the factory for therespective components of these packages). Special flanges, finishesor materials of construction are available at additional cost.See STODDARD SILENCERS Bulletin “D” for attenuation data for theD13H Discharge Silencer.
