I was struggling for inspiration of what to write this month, in this little introduction to the magazine, so I invited suggestions via Facebook! I was inundated with responses some sensible, some not!

Ideas for themes included Valentines Day, snowdrops and spring flowers, leap year and the breaking of Resolutions. Someone even sent me a little ditty that I thought I would share with you.

Roses are Red, using local is clever, this edition of Rossington Today, is the best one ever!

C ause for a Cuppa Hello once again. We are now properly into the new year. How many times have you written “2011” when you were meant to put “2012”? Shockingly I am doing pretty well. Most years we are well into March before I get it right!

February brings with it a special day that does’t get much press … Valentine’s Day. Febru-ary 14 may just pass you by without so much as a wave. However if you are a parent and you have a partner, a loving relationship is the best gift you can give your children. Would you allow me to share just a few bits about this thing called love. Gary Chapman wrote a book, The Five Love Languages. He mentions that as we are all created unique, each one of us has different ways that love is communicated to us. Let me briefly share the five ways Mr. Chapman mentions. You can go to www.flovelanguages.com to find out your love language! Words of Affirmation. Words are powerful, negative and positive. Words such as “I love you”, “thank you” or any of a number of encouraging words mean more to this person than the average. If this is their love language, a few words will certainly fill their emotional love tank. Quality Time. A person whose love language is quality time needs time with you without the telly, a mobile, computer and other disruptions. It could be a nice cup of tea around the kitchen table or a walk in the woods (leaving the mobile at home). This communicates “you have my undivided attention”. Give it a try! Receiving Gifts. Gifts don’t work for everyone. But they do for some people. A gift for the person whose love language is a gift thinks “they took the time and energy to think about me”. A huge warning here … you can’t BUY love (remember what the Beatles said?!) but it can help communicate love. Acts of Service. Do you think cooking tea for this person, hoovering the carpet or tidying up could communicate love? It could for someone whose love language is acts of service. It has even more impact when it is done without any fanfare and randomly. But for this person, our laziness or neglect in practical matters can say “you are not important”. Physical Touch. This love language is not all about sex, though that can be part of it. Touch such as a pat on the back, a hug, holding hands and just casual touches all show love, warmth and caring to this person. A Great New Event for 2012

Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields.

The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corporate Shield.

Following the 10k event will be a Community Challenge Family Fun Run for children and fami-lies, with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate.

Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles said “We are delighted to be working with the council to bring this event to Doncaster. The response has been tremendous, we had hundreds of people register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year for sport in UK and this event is for everyone”.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “The event promises something for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more competitive races - each taking in some of the wonderful open spaces that we have in Doncaster.“

The event has attracted sponsorship from global sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager Mike East was delighted to come on board as title sponsor for the event for the next two years “We have been looking for a big event to sponsor in the North of England and Run Doncaster fits the bill exactly. The run appeals to the new jogger as well as the seasoned athlete and it’s great that it is in a place as accessible as Doncaster”.

Going Solar - Should You?

Since April 2010 when the government announced massive new incentives for making the switch, there has been a huge surge in the solar power industry, but recent changes to this incentive scheme (effective 12 December) demand the question, “Is it worth it?”

Solar panel systems, also known as solar photovoltaics (PV) consist of small solar cells wired together to form larger panels. These panels are fitted to roofs which ideally face south. Although direction is not critical, the amount of electricity produced will depend upon the amount of sunlight received.

The solar cells capture the sun’s energy and convert it to electricity which can be used in the home for lighting and to run household appliances. It is estimated that a solar installation could meet around 40-50% of a household’s annual electricity consumption. Electricity can only be generated during daylight hours,and it cannot be stored. When it is not possible to generate your own electricity, for example when it is dark, electricity is supplied by your utility company.

Under the government’s Feed In Tariff (FIT), any electricity produced and used by the householder is free and the excess is sold to the national grid where it is bought by utility companies for supply to other consumers. In addition to the savings and potential earnings already outlined, you also get paid for generating the electricity in the first place.

Although there is still money to be earned by switching to solar, the amount is substantially less than it was before the recent changes, so the cost of installation needs to be taken into consideration to determine whether or not it is a financially sound investment. The cost for a typical solar system is around £10,000, and the estimated earnings and electricity bill savings over a 25year period can be as much as £20,000, possibly more if electricity costs continue to rise These figures are dependent on the size and direction of the installation though, and how much of the generated electricity you manage to take advantage of— you can visit the Energy Saving Trust website to personalise these calculations to meet your own circumstances.

Advice on the Money Saving Expert website suggests that unless you are able to pay outright for the installation of the panels, the cost of a loan or credit could dwarf any savings made, so the decision to switch to solar should be made very carefully. But for many it can be a sound investment.

Of course, there are other issues at stake here. It’s not all about money! By going solar, you will be using a free and renewable source of energy which doesn't release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. By reducing your personal carbon footprint you will be helping to ensure that the planet will still be here for your grandchildren and their children to enjoy in years to come!

supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 13th of December. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale.

During December we helped Santa visit over a thousand homes within the Tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations.

Santa’s reindeer won’t have gone hungry on Christmas Eve as children of all ages sprinkled magic reindeer food to guide Rudolph and his friends to their home. So thank you to all of you who supported us by purchasing Reindeer food, and again a big thank you to all of the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the food.

And of course a big thank you to the many, many more people who have supported us at our fundraising events throughout 2011. At Tickhill & District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs, so you can be sure that every penny you’ve given will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year.

R ossington Wheelers – January news The main event of the winter program the ‘Cyclo X-mas’ cyclo-cross meeting saw a new champion crowned in the open entry race for the first time in 3 years as SigmaSport professional Steve Lampier dethroned Rossington’s Graham Briggs who was reigning champion in both 2009 and 2010. The high tempo and quality of riders at the front of the

field left Graham struggling to catch the front 3 for much of the race after an early slide left him on the ground. A total of 89 riders took advantage of ideal (not frosty) conditions across the events and the club and hosts The Welfare took much credit for the event, the facilities and the course – thanks go out to all volunteers on the day and the 4 Wheelers members who competed on the day and completed the event. The Xmas period was kind weather-wise and club rides took place most days from Boxing Day onwards giving some members 250 miles in the bank to fend off the festive excesses and an ideal base to build through January and February into the early season. The first major target comes in mid April where the club is lining up a tilt at the www.peak100.co.uk sportive that packs in 7000ft + of climbing into its 105km – including the infamous 25% cobbled climb of Mow Cop. Further news will follow on this event next month. January’s introductory ride saw another milestone reached as the first 30 rider turn out was achieved for a 45 mile jaunt to Sandtoft aerodrome. The following week 20 riders braved sub zero temperatures for a tough 55 mile loop around North Notts, however the temperature was still too hot for 2 riders who decided that an impromptu dip in the ford near Clumber was the order of the day....not exactly triathlon weather so to spare any personal embarrassment we’ll refer to them simply as Rider X and Tony Hickey! Another introductory ride is planned in late February as a step-ping stone to the full club runs and throughout summer a Tuesday night ride of 30 mile will take place weekly. At the clubs recent AGM in mid January a further commitment to an increased race programme was drawn up with Paul Ellwell adopting a role as race secretary. This will enable entries and event details to be handled through a central club contact and we anticipate up to 12 riders may potentially race across the summer in various time trials and possibly road race leagues? I should also add a reminder that the clubs annual presentation awards evening is coming up this month on 24 February at The Welfare and includes childrens entertainment provided by ‘Sparky Marky’, disco and buffet and should be a great evening for the club? R ossington Main Cricket club Not a lot to write about just at the moment but the next few weeks look as if they could be quite lively, more on that next month.

The Indoor Chigers went into the Xmas break sitting on top of the league with a perfect seven wins out of seven but suffered a reverse at the hands of lowly Maltby in the first game back. Over indulgence perhaps!!

Anyone interested in joining us to play this great game, particularly juniors of all age groups here is the schedule for the indoor nets held at the Ian Wilson Sports Hall at Rossington All Saints School.

Keep your pet healthy and happy this winter

Despite their fur, pets can feel the cold just the same as humans do and freezing temperatures can create problems if you’re not prepared for winter. Here are some ‘Winter watch outs’ and handy tips on how to make sure your pet is happy and healthy during the chilly winter months:

· Try not to walk your dog on ice, your pet can slip as easily as you do!

· Don’t let your pet eat snow – you don’t know what it’s hiding and it can also cause hypothermia.

· Pets are attracted to the taste and smell of antifreeze but it’s poisonous so keep it stored out of reach.

· Make sure your pet stays warm. Give outdoor pets like rabbits an extra layer of bedding and consider moving them inside

· If your pet has outside water bowl, make sure it is de-iced regularly.

Rossington Parish Council News I hope everyone had a good Christmas and has a prosperous New Year. Two Parish Council meetings to report on this month, unlike last month! At the meeting held on the 13th Decem-ber a number of subjects were brought up in the public sessions, the cost of the firework dis-play, Christmas lights, white lines on Littleworth Lane and the moneys to be received from the coal extraction from the pit tip.

The most important item on December's meeting was the Parish budget and setting of the pre-cept. Each committee put forward its' own spending predictions, based on the projects etc. that will improve our village, and this was then put forward as a complete budget. The Parish Coun-cil also had to note the depleted state of the reserves. This resulted in a precept of £31.52 per year for a Band 'D' property, still the lowest in Doncaster (Barnby Dun/Kirk Sandall at £35.09 is next lowest). This was passed unanimously through all committees and in the Parish Council. This is an increase of approximately £3.29 per band 'D' property. The precept includes things such as paying for the Parish Council elections, Good Neighbours, Rossington in Bloom, the Christmas lights and Fayre and a good number of other projects.

The Christmas Fayre was a huge success and thanks to all involved, with a couple of fairground rides and trampoline, Christmas stalls on the market (the mulled wine and roasted chestnuts were excellent!), a steam engine and organ, a puppet theatre, a jazz band and the Scout's band, face painting and Santa and his elves. 500 selection boxes were given out by Santa and it was enjoyed by all. Don't forget this was all paid for by the Parish Council. If I've missed anyone please forgive me, and finally great thanks to the Methodist hall for the use of their facilities and the dance school that relocated for the day.

Planters have been purchased for the Market place and discussions are ongoing for Rossington in Bloom and we hope to hit the ground running in March/April with a Spring display. Any ideas on this are more than welcome.

The Parish Council has been asked to contribute financially in a small way to the library when it moves, this will be discussed at the next strategy meeting. Please note that the Projects, Strategy & Regeneration committees are open to the public as is the Parish Council meeting, and all are welcome.

It also has been proposed that trees are planted to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee, any suggestions on this or indeed any other ideas for this will be gratefully received

Rossington Main Football Club

December was quite a productive month for the 1st team with 3 League victories and 9 points from a possible 12. Following back to back wins over Emley and Worksop which saw us score nine impressive goals, we lost to a late goal at Hemsworth on the Saturday before Christmas. The weather held fine for our Boxing Day derby versus Askern Villa and we were rewarded with our best attendance of the season - an early goal secured another win. We started 2012 on a sound footing and came away from Appleby Frodingham with a comfortable 3-1 victory but this was to be the last appearance of the season for two of our strikers. We had mixed emotions when losing Zeph Thomas and Jason Stokes to Belgian 4th Division side Royal Racing Montegnee - disappointed at losing 2 talented young players but also pleased for them and proud that they had been spotted whilst representing Rossington Main F.C. We wish them both every success in their bid to play at a higher level and this emphasises one of the aims of the Club as we strive to develop local talent.

After progressing in 2 separate Cup competitions since early December our 2nd team suffered a shock defeat at home to Bawtry prior to Christmas. This set-back allowed 2nd place Sutton Rovers to close the gap at the top of the table. The 2nds have two difficult away fixtures at Swinton and Carcroft to see them through January.

The U.19s have a run of home League games through January and February and play virtually every Tuesday night on the Welfare with a 7-45pm kick-off.

Finally this month the Baris Northern Counties East League where the 1st team operate have begun some interesting statistics records. Our home attendances this season show an increase of 26% on last year - only one club can better that but their average attendance is much lower. A very big thank you to our regular supporters and to those of you who have made your first visit to our Oxford Street ground this year. Another statistic of which the Club should be proud is that we currently lie 2nd in the Fair Play League with the fewest cautions and only one sending-off this season so far. Congratulations to the 1st team squad and the Manager on achieving this excellent standard.

Rossington Councillor's Update The White Rose Way bridge building over 14 railway lines was delayed by the weather. Special dispensation has been granted to carry this out on Saturday and Sunday nights in early January, let's keep our fingers crossed and hope it's finished soon to save DMBC some money

After all the trouble on Bankwood estate with metal and fuel thefts, now there has been a major fire with over a thousand tons of pallets and recycled material being burned. This started suspiciously at 3.50 in the morning. There were 4 fire engines in attendance.

The Library at Holmescarr is looking for volunteers to help maximize its' opening hours. The library will have an automatic librarian and will be run jointly by DMBC and volunteers. Please contact Sally on 865559 if you can help. Training will be given. All books etc. will be supplied by DMBC and one of the rooms, will be paid for by the Parish Council and the others by DMBC. It will have all the facilities of the current library.

Holmescarr is the only self-financing council building and will have not only the Library, the whole of the South Neighbourhood team, and the co-location Children's Team, but also Adult Services are taking the whole of the upstairs and St Leger Homes are moving their offices in also. It is still a community building, with Arc and Crafts, Eric our Baptist Pastor, the Before and After School Club and the Boxing Club also present.

ASB's are down 6%, there have been 7 less criminal damage incidents and there have been 12% less burglaries than the same month last year. Good news for a village that already has low crime and ASB statistics. There were no ASB fires reported in December, which after the excellent No-vember is really good news. Speeding on Stripe Road, illegal waste transporters and scrap metal thefts are being prioritised and targeted.

The community payback scheme has been used to do up the marketplace toilets and these should be up to scratch now. I hope they will be kept in order and not vandalized! South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue will be 'Embedding' a firefighter at the Youth Centre to build trust and make them aware of the consequences of starting fires.

Rossington Kingfishers, the youth fishing club at the Brick pond, have received £200 from St. Leger Homes for fishing tackle and transport. This complements money from Rossington Ward Councillors' flexible budget to restock the fish in the pond.

National Churches Trust awards a £10,000.00 grant to St Lukes Parish Church New Rossington

Work can now finally commence on the much-needed new roof for St Luke's after receiving a grant of £10,000.00 from the NCT towards the costs or replacing the church roof.

The church, now a Grade II listed building, which was first built under the auspices of the South Yorkshire Coalfields Extension Committee was dedicated by the first Bishop of Sheffield on 18th October 1916 and has been at the heart of the New Rossington community since that time.

Following the recent re-ordering of the church complet-ed last year, it is now possible for the church to be used not only for regular services, but also for hosting supper clubs, group meetings and a variety of fayres for the benefit of the overall village community.

This grant, together with other grants received has now helped to assure the long-term future of St Lukes for generations to come although the congregation and local supporters continue with their fundraising efforts to raise the final £30,000.00 needed to complete the last phase of the re-building.

Friends of Brodsworth Way Residents Group We had our first coffee morning on 11th January in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion with just 10 ac-tual visitors but decided that we would hold an-other one on Wednesday 8th February, from 9:30am until lunchtime, with improved advertis-ing and hopefully better support. We are aware there are people on the Brodsworth Way estate who do live alone and hope they will feel able to lend their support. At the time of writing this, I am unable to report on our FoBW meeting on 16th January but if there is anyone new to the estate or have inter-est in our group, please contact Susan on 869001.

Rossington Torndale School The spring term is always a busy, hardworking time at Tornedale Infant School. Children are very busy with topics such as Winter, Weather and Homes. They are learning about weather conditions and where people live, in this country and in countries far away.

We are also pleased to announce that an out of school club has started on our school site. Rossington Early Learners is an Ofsted registered private provider.

They accept children from ages 3 to 8. The club runs from 7.30 am providing breakfast and takes children to Tornedale Infant School and St Joseph’s Primary School.

They also pick up from St Joseph’s and Tornedale at home time and provide tea, staying open until 6pm. Sarah and Julie, Managers of

Rossington Gardeners Association Spring is just around the corner, the bulbs are already poking their heads through the earth and in some cases in flower early due to mild conditions, much better than all the snow we had last year. Rossington Gardeners Association shop is open for the new season from Saturday Feb-ruary 11th we are open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 12 noon and Wednesdays 2 p.m. to 4p.m. Membership is 1.50 pence per year and we sell inserts, canes, compost, seed potatoes, onion sets, grow organic, phostrogen, Jeyes fluid and many other chemicals you may need for your garden. We are situated off Bankwood Lane, opposite the old concrete plant. NEW MEMBERS VERY WELCOME. For any further information ring Ron on 01302 868831.
