It should begin with the training of achild, and step by step as the child istaught to walk and to talk, to read andto understand, he should be taught theessentials of a pleasant, happy personality. As he is tau gh t to have his faceand hands cleansed that the dir t anddross that have disguised the real features should be removed, he should betau gh t to remove from his consciousnessthose things that will conceal the person ality’s real charms. A n exampleshould be set by the development of thepersonalities of the parents, and thethings that we read an d the things thatwe permit ourselves to see and witnessare contribu tory factors of which we areoften unaware.

The man or woman who reads dailyor weekly only those newspapers orperiodicals that deal with the contentions between labor and capital, betweenthe various opposing factors of socialand economic conditions, an d the attacksbetw een riv al political parties, is sure todevelop a personality that is contentiousand ge nerally supercritical. On theother hand, those who make it theirbusiness to read such literature, andespecially such newspapers as attemptto present the higher and better side oflife, and to ignore as unessential thesordid and unfortunate things of life, will develop a tendency toward attune-ment with the happy, sunlit side of theworld. Th ere are newspapers whichdelight in overemphasizing the sordidthings as constituting the most importan t news of the world. The re are otherpublications which love to emphasize

the kind and good things which lifepresents from day to day.

One cannot, for instance, take up abook of astronom y an d read it carefully

without becoming convinced that thereare m arvelous laws in the un iverse constantly operating for the good of man,and as one walks out in the evening andlifts his eyes tow ard h eaven, h e is boundto find new joy in noticing the groupsof stars, their arrangements, and observing things about them that he hadneve r seen before. Hav ing read thebook, and having become acquaintedwith another part of the universe, hefinds a ne w field fo r pleasa nt a nd happycontemplation. But those who read onlysuch books that deal with crime andwith war, or with the economic struggles of our earthly systems, are boundto look upon every business transaction, every social contact, and every incidentof life with a somewhat cynical andcritical attitude. Thes e thing s affect ourpersonality, as do our private thoughtsand our personal convictions whichare subtly created and molded by thethings we read and hear, observe andcomprehend.

The creating of personality is something that is continuous and eternalfrom birth to transition, and beyond;personality is imm ortal. As we buildand create it today and tomorrow, itwill act and react and express itself inthe eternal future. It will be the realpart of us that w il l survive our ea rthlyexistence and become our spiritual heritage in the kingdom of God.

Are You Just Imagining?

By F r a n c e s A n d e r s e n , F. R. C.h e night was October 9,

1946— a date w ithin easyrecollection of all of us.Th e place was a rear garden—it could have beenin anyone’s garden. Thetime—ten o’clock in theevening.

I was there! “I ” migh t je any one of us , bu t there w ere tw oyoung people with me who made themoment just a little different.

The Giacobini-Zinner Comet wasbrandishing its beauteous tail throughthe heavens. The canop y overhead,in our particular vicinity, was radian tly clear. N ot a fleck of cloud wasintruding.

Th e boy at m y side was fourteen, buthis seventeen-year-old sister was reprimanding his “senseless” attitude, as westood there together.

Henry, shall we call him, was nervously twisting the top button of hislight-blue sweater. His righ t foot wasceaselessly tapping the soft grass benea th it. T he n he spoke to me.

“Do you think such a comet will evercollide, someday, with the earth andsha tter us to pieces? Do you thi nk theWerewolves will appear at these times,to destroy us?”

H en ry ’s sister found i t difficult to restrain her annoyance, and rebuked hisattitude again with, “If you’d only reason, He nry , you’d realize that w hat yousay isn’t logical!”

Elsa, we’ll call Henry’s sister, in hergrasp and presentation of things wasmore to the m ann er of the male-animal.She wanted to be logical and to expressa decision only after it had been “reasoned with” thoroughly.

That Henry was highly intui t ive Ihad learned from previous contact withhim. But the impulses tha t surgedthrough him— the feelings he had, wererunnin g ra mp ant— “bowling him over,”it could well be said, for Henry had received his first impressions of this lifefrom the dram atic stage of the Europ ean

Th eatre of W ar. It now took a slightsuggestion to quiet the racing thoughtsin his mind.

Elsa’s recourse to reasoning things o uthad kep t he r attitud e cool. But it wasHenry who “came” with the periodicand not un-rational suggestions of howsome of the affairs of man could wellbe worked out.

I couldn’t help summarize: “If onlyHenry could temper his creations withreason, and Elsa could extend her view

through the aid of the slumbering intu itive faculties tha t lay, almost untouched, within her.”

Henry was forever discussing thethings that were going to happen “fortyor fifty years from now.” He found release in flinging his thoughts into theheavens, and attempting to put theknown “effects” of this and that planettogether and to show how their influence would someday overpower thethings of the earth.

Yes, it’s the thing to do to look ahead, but right from the spot one is standingon, and not from across the fence.“Across the fence” leaves a gap and ifthat gap is too wide, we will never getacross the fence.

Are you just imagining what maypossibly happen in some far-off day, orare you IMAGING those things thatCAN happen?

To wander off into the days of fortyor Fifty years hence is to remain in theunk now n and the unuseful. Yes, theaffairs of those far-distant years m ay beglanced into, and any sort of conclusiondraw n from such a glance. Tiu e, theydo have their allurement; however, ifwe wall draw these far horizons into theDEMONSTRABLE realm, we will findtha t we are making a study of ourselves, that this study is fascinating to an impelling degree, and that this study maybe a part of every moment of our busyand w ell-spent days. As you brushelbows, then, with the milling crowd, you will know' HOW to demonstrategreatness.

Graiid Canal along which sailing vessels and modern steamers pass on their way to the ports of the world.Th e wrought-iro n sign over the doorway carries the designation in Danish: “T he Gold Ma ker's House."
