About the Run….
The 5K run is held on the first Sunday of every October
It is Canada’s largest single day,
volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to
raising funds for Breast Cancer research,
awareness, and education
About the Run…
The first event was in Toronto in 1992, with 1500 participants and raised $18,000
In 2008, 55 communities and 170,000 people participated and raised
$28.5 million!
Established in 1986 by a dedicated group of volunteers, the Foundation works to fund, support and advocate for:
• Relevant and innovative research, • Meaningful education and awareness programs, • Early diagnosis and effective treatment, and • And a positive quality of life for those living with
breast cancer.
About the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation…
Is the Foundation’s funding making a difference?
YES! Here are a few examples of studies that were done with funding from CBCF:
A Foundation-funded research team led by Dr. Pignol at Sunnybrook, achieved a world-first in breast cancer treatment by developing a one-hour, one-time procedure that makes it possible for eligible women to receive radiation therapy without having to go for treatment every day for five weeks or more. It also has few side effects.
Foundation funded research
Julia Knight, PhD, at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital, uncovered findings that contributed to changes in the recommended daily intake of vitamin D for Canadians. Taking more vitamin D is preventative: it may help stop breast cancer before it starts.
Foundation funded research
Karen Fergus, PhD, at Sunnybrook focused her research on understanding the impact of the illness on intimate relationships, with the objective of developing better coping strategies for women with breast cancer and their partners. Today, Dr. Fergus provides supportive counselling and psychotherapy for women facing the range of emotional, personal and existential issues that accompany a diagnosis of breast cancer.
Foundation funded research
Dr. Jeff Wrana and Ian Taylor at Mount Sinai Hospital developed DyNeMo, a new technology that can determine the best treatment options and predict with over 80 per cent accuracy a patient’s chance of recovering from breast cancer.
Foundation funded research
From a mother-daughter study on breast density, Dr. Norman Boyd of Princess Margaret Hospital found a link between breast water and breast cancer risk. This study concluded that risk assessment using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instead of mammography should start much earlier in life. This study could help researchers better understand breast density and influence breast screening.
