While the Jalisco Grill mayfeature many familiar Mex-ican staples such as tacos,

burritos, nachos and carne asada,perhaps it is the joie de vivre of itsowner that sets it apart.

Hailing from a small town justoutside of Guadalajara, Mexico,Ramon Arias moved to Californiawhen he was 15 years old. But itwasnt until nine years ago that hedecided to go into the restaurant

business.Arias opened the Jalisco Grill,

his first restaurant, on FairwayDrive in Roseville in 2003 and hassince expanded to three restau-rants, one on Foothills Drive inRoseville and another in MidtownSacramento.

I thought it was an easy busi-ness to run, Arias said. Because you are always inside, dealing

with different customers every

day. Arias said Jalisco Grill has

gained popularity because thefood is fresh, fast and the serviceis friendly. He said the ideabehind the menu is to stay as trueto the style of his native Jalisco aspossible.

Popular menu items includethe fajitas, Arias said, which areserved with the customers choice

of charbroiled chicken or beef,

grilled onions, peppers and toma-toes served with sour crme, tor-tillas, guacamole and lettuce onthe side.

The family-owned restaurantalso features authentic Mexicanfare such as the alambre plate charbroiled steak sauted withbacon, tossed with onions, bellpeppers and tomatoes and servedwith rice and beans.

Those seeking true authenticitycan order the sopa de siete mares

(seven seas soup), a tomato-based soup made with a mix ofcrab, clams, fresh fish, octopus,shrimp and any other seafood thechef feels like throwing in thatday.

The resale store holds a spe-cial place in the hearts of manyof its customers and those whodonate goods at its HardingBoulevard locale.

Because we are hospice, weget really nice donations, saidstore manager Rose Anne Wat-son. Hospice has touched a lotof peoples lives and they wantto give back.

These people give back byvolunteering their time to per-form different duties in thestore there are nearly 90 vol-unteers on the list or by drop-ping off gently used items tostock the shelves.

Customers can perusethrough shelves of dishes, sil-verware, figurines, holiday dec-

For close to three years, JeffMiguel has been servingfood to residents at Sierra

Pointe Senior Community.But the meals always come

with something special anextra helping of conversationand a smile on the side.

Miguel, 22, serves breakfastand lunch to seniors in the com-munitys dining hall, whichcould rival any traditionalrestaurant.

I like being around good, nicepeople, he said of his job. Andthe food is really good here, too.

The menu includes regulars hamburgers, hot dogs and thelike but also daily specials. Ona recent Monday, beef stew andsalad Nicoise were among thespecial offerings.

When hes not satisfying Sierra

Pointes resi-dents hunger,the WoodcreekHigh Schoolgrad is a musicproducer andenjoys record-ing hip-hoptracks at home.

The person-able Miguel is also a sports fan, atopic popular among the resi-dents.

There are some cool, reallyinteresting residents. One spe-cific one, every day we talk about

the Giants games, said Miguel,who was born in San Francisco.

There are a lot of Giants fanshere, so every day I say, Hey, didyou see the game? or talk aboutthe latest rumors.

Hes built relationships withthe residents, some of whomhave shared personal stories ofsurviving war. One resident,Marion Humbert, stopped by while Miguel was being inter-viewed to see if he would snagher a couple of pieces of breadfrom the kitchen.

Hes one of the best guys Iknow. Ive been trying to get himto go out with my great-grand-daughter, the 90-year-old saidwhile waiting for her snack. Hesreal natural and means what hesays and does. (I like) everythingabout him, from the way hedresses to how he treats people.Hes perfect!

The shop supports Sut-ter VNA and Hospicepatients and bereavementservices.

Hospice provides in-home and skilled nursing
