Doing taxes is a realheadache, especiallywhen youre trying to save

some money in a downeconomy.

But Certified PublicAccount Gregory Herrickmust be doing somethingright to be voted Best TaxService by Press Tribunereaders.

(Its) probably becauseIm pretty good, Herricksaid with a chuckle. Itsalways great to have thelocals think Im doing a

good job.His craft of money

minding has been honedwith years of experience.He served as the corpo-rate controller of Silicone Valley where he also didsome tax work. After dis-covering a passion for it,

he took and passed theCPA exam and worked forinternational firms beforestriking out on his own.

Ive been doing taxeson the side for about 30years and Ive been doingtaxes full time for 10years, Herrick said.

In forming his own taxservice, Herricks goaldelves deeper than simplysaving his clients some

money.A lot of it is educating

clients and showing themhow to save tax money,Herrick said. This isnt athree month business, itsyear-round.

His services cover all

aspects of finance includ-ing tax planning,accounting, bookkeepingand tax resolution withthe IRS.

Herricks businessstrives to help clientsunderstand how the sys-tem works and thus, allow

them to make the bestdecisions for their indi-vidual situation. But hemakes sure to give hisclients creative controlover their finances.

I look over their plansbut I dont do financialplanning, he said. I tellthem how they shouldput their money notwhere to put it.

With the economy tak-ing a nosedive for the pastcouple years, Herrick hasgotten creative in savinghis clients money. Hismethods include findingcredits for business oper-ators with new employ-ees, drivers of hybrid cars

and laid-off employeespaying for health insur-ance.

However bleak theeconomy may seem, Her-rick does see light at theend of the tunnel.

I think the conomy isgetting back up again, hesaid. Were building morehouses and the contrac-tors I work with see morebusiness.

As far as his Best of theBest win is concerned,Herrick sees it as an hon-or.

It was a good feelingknowing other peoplethought I was good and(that) it wasnt my ego, hesaid.

tomers happy.After all, shes owned therestaurant for the last sev-en years its been open21 years and worked asa waitress there for eight years before taking over

the joint.Johnson credits her cus-

tomers loyalty with thecafes long-term success.

We have a very loyal

base of customers andbecause weve been hereso long its multi-genera-tional, she said. Its likefamily.

One particularly dedi-cated group of customers

is a collection of 10 elderlymen who get togetherevery Friday morning toeat breakfast at PacificStreet Caf and converse

about their favorite hobby building model rail-roads.

Its a fitting conversationto have in the restaurantscozy atmosphere as amodel train travels around

the ceiling to the delight ofyoung customers.

The caf, located inRosevilles historic district,has been able to survivethe current economicrecession by cutting costs,but not at the expense of

the food, Johnson said.Pacific Street Caf serves

breakfast and lunch all day long. Menu itemsinclude traditional dishes,such as three-egg omelets,breakfast burrito and hamand eggs. A side order ofbacon is also a fan-

favorite.People always tell me

we have the best baconaround, Johnson said.

The restaurant alsooffers a selection of spe-cialty items, such as Polish

sausage and eggs, freshlymade buttermilk biscuitsand cinnamon roll Frenchtoast.

Theres not anything(on the menu) I dont rec-ommend, Johnson said.
