On the CoverRosary High School Announces 2015 GraduatesRosary High School held a Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2015 on May 20 at St. John Neumann Church in St. Charles, Illinois. The Mass was celebrated by Father David Peck and Deacon Paul Iwanski. Diplomas were presented to the 101 graduates by Rosary Principal Sister Ann Brummel, O.P., Assistant Principal Sister Katrina Lamkin, O.P., and Class of 2015 Valedictorian Isabelle Ylo.

Music was provided by Rosary’s orchestra and chorus, directed by Ms. Megan Drahos. The graduation speaker was Alyssa Mertka.

“It’s not just the building and the memories made in it that make Rosary so beautiful: it’s all of you,” Mertka said. “God made each person in the Class of 2015 unique and precious in His eyes. Whether you sang your heart out onstage, or scored the winning point in a basketball game, or wrote a killer dialogue for philosophy class, or finished that huge art project you were working on, or finally solved that calculus problem that was giving you so much trouble, you all found ways this year to glorify God through the talents He gave you, whatever they might be.”

She concluded, “Francois Rabelais’s last words were reported to be “I am off to seek the Great Perhaps.” It is time for us now to head out into the world to seek our own Great Perhaps’s, wherever they may be. Though we might not feel like it, we are ready. Rosary has formed each of us into strong women of “capital T” Truth who can handle anything the world decides to throw at us.”

Zimmerman Honored with Spirit/Service AwardsMonica Zimmerman (‘16) of Batavia, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence from the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and with a President’s Volunteer Service Award granted by the program on behalf of President Obama.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognizes young people across America for outstanding volunteer service. Certificates of Excellence are granted to the top 10 percent of all applicants in each state and the District of Columbia. The President’s Volunteer Service Awards recognize Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their community and their country.

Monica was awarded based upon her work with the Crayons for Kids program in which students from Rosary High School and Marmion Academy collect school supplies for local children in need. Founded in 2004 by Monica’s brother Brian Zimmerman (Marmion ’07), Crayons for Kids now serves more than 90 schools/agencies in the Fox Valley-Naperville areas. Monica helps recruit and schedule volunteers from both high schools, tracks data, sorts/packs/delivers supplies, and helps schedule participation by Jewel-Osco and other stores. She has volunteered with Crayons for Kids for 10 years, since its inception. Last year, more than 36,000 packages of supplies were collected and given to children in need.

“It’s important to provide school supplies to those who don’t have them so all children have an equal opportunity to learn,” Monica said. “With the many volunteers from Rosary and Marmion, the focus is on kids helping kids; our students working to directly benefit the community.”

“Prudential is honored to celebrate the contributions of these remarkable young volunteers,” said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld. “By shining a spotlight in the difference they’ve made in their communities, we hope others are inspired to volunteer, too.”

This year, Crayons for Kids will be collecting school supplies at area Jewel-Osco stores July 25-26 and August 1-2. Help is needed collecting, packing, and distributing supplies to nearly 90 Fox Valley schools and agencies. Contact Monica Zimmerman for more information at [email protected].

Faculty Spotlight

We express our deepest appreciation to our faculty and staff who retired after the 2014-15 school year. They have touched the lives and hearts of many at Rosary High School. Together, they have given Rosary an amazing 100+ years!

Señora Rose Rebenstorf has been teaching for 42 years—38 of them at Rosary. “The faculty was one-third lay people and two-thirds Dominican sisters when I started,” she said. “Sister Mary Paul was my first mentor. I worked with her on Student Council and we handled elections, the mother-daughter brunch, and the daddy-daughter dance. I moderated the Spanish club, was the prom moderator for 24 years, went on 32 Kairos retreats, and was the Candle-Rose moderator for about 30 years.

Why did Señora make her career at Rosary? “Being able to watch the girls grow in to young women was such a gift,” she said. “From freshmen to seniors, they become faith-filled leaders ready to take on the world on their own.”

Señora taught several students and later taught their daughters as well. Pictured above are Jenna Streich (‘15) and her mother Janet Nickels (‘79), Señora Rebenstorf, Bridget Gordon Neff (‘81) and her daughter Rachel Neff (‘15).

Over the years, Senora made 32 trips to Europe and Spanish-speaking countries. She also did some teaching at the college level while earning her masters at SIU.

“It is a ministry to work in Catholic education,” she said. The next chapter for Señora will be working at Rosary in an academic advisory capacity. She has served on the steering committee for AdvancED which drives education improvement through accreditation, research and innovation, policy and advocacy, and technology. She will continue this work, and will also be mentoring new teachers, helping them to undertsnad the Rosary culture.

Spanish students from Rosary often leap ahead in college, earning AP credits and testing out of early level classes. Ashley Amodeo (’11) wrote: “I took the exam to test out of Spanish I and ended up getting credit for Spanish III! ...Thanks for your

amazing teaching skills and care for your students.”

“The teacher who had the greatest impact on me was Rose Tovell (now Rebensdorf ), wrote Dawn Weber (’86). “She brought the language—and the geopolitical realities faced in Spanish-speaking countries—alive to me. I can still recall her telling us who the “Contras” and the “Sandinistas” were and why they were relevant to us across the miles. With her encouragement, I graduated college with a Spanish major and lived in Madrid during my junior year abroad. Ms. Rebensdorf absolutely helped me to be who I am today by encouraging a broad world view, compassion for all across the globe, and curiosity about other countries and cultures.”

US History teacher Mrs. Bonnie Goliak has been teaching for 38 years—four at St. Damien, 29 at Mount Assissi high school for girls in Darien, and five years at Rosary. “I am so happy that I was able to finish my career here,” she said.” Rosary girls are the most respectful, hard-working and compassionate students I have ever taught.”

Mrs. Goliak is known for bringing history to life through a series of

characters who lived in the United States from colonial times through the 1960s counter-culture era. She brought in artifacts from each time period, and the students learned dances from the times as well. She began building these characters at Mount Assissi in 1981.

Mrs. Goliak’s students consistently achieved top scores on the AP History exams. “I would like to thank you for all of your hard work in helping me achieve my best not only in the classroom, but also for the AP exam, and for life in general,” wrote Alex Carter (’15). “You are an amazing teacher, and never failed to put a smile on my face! I loved your funny stories that helped me remember things in history…Thanks for making this class my favorite of all time!

“Thank you for the energy and love you put in to teaching,” wrote Alex’s parents, Ruth and Rick Carter. “Alex learned so much from you and the example you set.”

“You have made such an impact on all of us this past year.” wrote Melody FisherLewek. “Thank you for the great times in APUSH (AP US History). I’m really grateful that we got to have you as our teacher.”

Campus Minister Mrs. Sandy Iwanski is retiring after 16 years at Rosary. Until 2008, she was also the associate director of the graduate school of Pastoral Ministry at St. Mary’s in Minnesota where she oversaw all masters thesis projects, and she taught in the ministry formation program at the Diocese of Rockford.

Faculty Spotlight

Mrs. Iwanski was the author of Advent and Lent prayer books for high school students which were used at Rosary and countless other schools, and wrote—with Rosary students—the Frequently-Asked-Questions section of The Practical Guide to High School Campus Ministry.

Her favorite part of her Rosary experience? “The opportunity to pastor a community,” she said. “My job was to communicate the Dominican charism, to teach the students to preach with their lives. My goal was to help them answer the question: “What does it look like to be a woman who loves God?” As they go through Rosary, they hear it, they see it, and it becomes their experience. I liken it to walking through the fog and only later do you realize that you are wet. Girls come out of Rosary drenched in the understanding that God loves them. They know that God loves them and that who they are is enough.”

“It’s the job of everyone in the building at Rosary to bring God’s love to their students,” she said. “The campus minister helps set that in motion and makes available the tools to do that.”

Two of Mrs. Iwanski’s favorite Rosary traditions are Holiday Hopes: “Because we so clearly lived out the scripture that all you have to do is bring what you have and that will be enough,” and Hope for Haitians: “Because a family who lived in rubble now has a house because of what we do here at Rosary.”

“Knowing you has enriched my understanding of faith and helped me towards a more fruitful relationship with God,” wrote Alexis Thomas (’15). “Each day your prayers contain deep, profound thoughts that leave me both thinking and feeling,” wrote Brittany Hamling (’15). And Alex Carter (’15) summed it up with the Rosary motto: “Thanks to you, I am a woman of truth!”

Theology teacher Mr. Paul Iwanski has been at Rosary for nine years, and is a Deacon at Rosary and at St. John Neumann in St. Charles. “This was a second career for me, coming from the business world,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed the teaching experience.” When asked about his future plans, Mr. Iwanski said “I’ve been planning things for 40 years. I don’t want to plan any more.”

Students said they will miss Mr. I’s life lessons. “You have taught me many life lessons that I will always remember,” wrote Megan Conlin (’15). “I want to thank you for being a dedicated teacher and opening my eyes to the simplicity in life.”

“There is no way to measure your influence throughout these many years,” the Thomas family wrote to both Iwanskis. “We gratefully acknowledge the gift of yourselves as examples and instruments of faith.”

Mrs. Cheryl Miller, receptionist/nurse, is also retiring after 22 years at Rosary, and Mrs. Ann Edwards (‘70) is also leaving us after 19 years in the finance office, development, cafeteria, and maintenance department.

We ask God’s blessing on each of them as they embark on their new adventures.

Madame Cassie Volpe just finished her fifth year teaching French at Rosary, and her husband’s job transfer is moving the family to Texas where she will be a stay-at-home-mom to one-year-old Lizzie.

Rosary was Madame’s first teaching job. She will miss her

students the most. “Teaching a language is special because you get to know each student personally,” she said. “You can talk about their day and still be learning French. I will miss being in the classroom and seeing the girls. I will miss the Class of 2015 because I got to have them all four years.”

“I learned so much from Madame Volpe,” said Claire Nelson (‘15) who took four years of French. “Mostly, I learned that French class is not just the study of a language but of a culture. She also snuck in a couple of life lessons!”

“She was passionate about her job and her subject, and she truly cared about us students; it showed in everything she did,” she said. “She’s a fantastic teacher and I wish her well in Texas! Vous nous manquerez!”

School NewsCatholic Schools Week Mass with Bishop Malloy, Visit from Dominican SisterCatholic Schools Week 2015 began with a visit from St. Catherine of Siena. Sister Nancy Murray, OP, is travels the country and throughout the world bringing this Dominican saint to life. With simple props and a lively imagination, Sr. Nancy—an Adrian Dominican, drama major, and the sister of actor Bill Murray—portrays Catherine as the colorful, strong, passionate and enthusiastic personality that she was. Family and friends joined us in the Rosary auditorium for a chance to learn about the life of St. Catherine and become acquainted with her fierce devotion to and love for God.

Later in the week, we welcomed Bishop David Malloy as the celebrant for our Catholic Schools Week Eucharistic liturgy where we observed the memorial of our Dominican brother, Thomas Aquinas.

We Built Two Houses in HaitiThrough the generosity of our Rosary families, we collected funds to build one and a half houses in Haiti through our Lenten Almsgiving project this year! We collected more than $9700, inlcuding a generous donation of $2000 from the Rotary Club. Rosary works with the Rotary Club through our Interact Club, moderated by Mart O’Connor (see photo). In addition, Rosary’s National Honor Society, Social Justice Club, French Club and Art Club emptied their treasuries and donated the funds to Hope for Haitians!

Marmion Academy joined us in this Lenten project this year, and with them, we completed the second house through Hope for Haitians. For more information about this organization, see hopeforhaitians.org.

DevelopmentSr. Mary Paul McCaughey Honored at 14th Annual Candlelight BallThe 14th Annual Candlelight Ball was held Saturday, March 21 at the Naperville Marriott. This year’s Candlelight Ball celebrated Sister Mary Paul McCaughey, O.P., an individual who exemplifies the Dominican charism and values of Rosary High School, continues the tradition of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, and demonstrates an ongoing commitment to our mission. Sister Mary Paul, former Superintendent of Chicago Archdiocese Catholic Schools and former Rosary teacher, shared her experiences and vision for Catholic Education. As Rosary High School’s largest fundraiser of the year, Candlelight Ball is a festive evening for alumnae, families and friends. Everyone enjoyed an evening of celebration while assisting Rosary in raising funds for a wonderful cause – our students.

This was the third-largest revenue producing Candlelight Ball and much can be attributed to the most popular auction item this year, Dinner and Skydiving with Sister Bernie! Chairing the 2015 event were Lori (May ’78) and Jay Bergman. Thank you to all who supported by attending this fun and memorable event. The night was complimented by music from Rosary High School’s Ensemble, Orchestra and Chorus members, and of course Chef Dan and the Appetizers!

We hope you are able to join us at the next Candlelight Ball which will feature some exciting changes. Watch for details soon!

Proceeds from the event benefit the Sister Mary Joseph Scholarship Fund sponsored by the Rosary High School Alumnae Association. The Sister Mary Joseph Scholarship is named for our founding principal and is awarded to the daughter of a Rosary Alumna who scores the highest on the entrance exam.

15th Annual Road Scholars 5K Family Run/Walk

#engineeringis everywhere! And 2002 Rosary alumna Marieke Lahey is on a mission to help people realize that. Through Marieke’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) outreach, she’s met countless elementary and middle-school aged kids who, when you ask them what an engineer is, or what an engineer does, just look back at you with a blank stare. And that reaction is common, even among adults.

After reading countless articles on the lack of females going into engineering fields, Marieke had an idea. Surely the evidence out there points to women being smart and capable enough to handle engineering. Women have reached parity in challenging fields such as Medicine, Law, and even Forensic Sciences, but a measly 14 percent of engineers are women. Research suggests that girls want to go into fields where they know they can help people, and where they can make a positive impact on someone’s life. As an engineer, Marieke knew that engineers do just that, and often do it in a collaborative, creative environment. She also understood that a major focus would need to be combating society’s view of engineers as the introverted, antisocial stereotype that is often portrayed in media.

So Marieke started a social media campaign in March to show people what engineering really is, what engineering is all about and what engineers actually look like. You’d be surprised how few engineers actually fit the stereotype! She hopes to be able to secure funding in the next year in order to devote more time to the cause, and is also working on developing TV shows to further broaden the reach and mission of #engineeringis. Think Bill Nye and Grey’s Anatomy—engineering edition.

Check out the campaign on the following platforms:

• twitter.com/engineersdo• instagram.com/engineeringis• facebook.com/engineersdo

And please contact Marieke with any ideas, topics, or stories you’d like to see highlighted!

Marieke thanks Rosary not only for the education she received there, but the curiosity for life-long learning and hard work that Rosary encouraged, and the confidence Rosary instilled in all of us that we really can be whatever we want to be in this life and we are most fulfilled when we use all of our God-given gifts.

studios in the Chicago area and in southern Illinois.

She writes the following about Rosary’s influence on her accomplishments: “Rosary’s rigorous curriculum prepared me to succeed astronomically in college. Madame Volpe prepared me for college French courses and emphasized grammar and reading. We were required to read Candid

by Voltaire, which has been mentioned throughout my college courses. The focus on grammar allowed me to test out of the first year of French at DePaul and succeed in all of my classes. Without Madame Volpe’s instruction, I would not be where I am in my French studies. There are numerous opportunities with the French language that will further your career.” Good luck Madison!
