Arkansas Open (4) 2013(A12 English, Bled V)

Preparing to meet Qd6 with Bc3 and Bb4. Black would like to consolidate, connect his rooks, and even prepare counterplay by f6 and e5, which Qd6 would effect in a move. White continues to eye d6, and it should be noted that black suffers weaknesses on both dark and light squares now.

Key transition point.

Black's hope is to imbalance the position. The weakness on b6 plus the possibilities of kingside expansion ensure white's bishop will be better than the knight.

The final calculation, forced and hinging on tactics. Black's plan to trade queens and attack white's queenside along the c-file threatens white's advantage.

Round 1

There were no upsets. Most games were crushouts. Oscar Torrijos gave Rory Chambers a challenge with his Smith Morra Gambit. Bill Orton pretty much got everything he wanted in his Sicilian c3 turned French Defense. The f4-f5 plan worked, but the final infiltration was on the queen’s side.

Round 2

Rory plays the theory-approved Rubinstein Variation against Dan Holmes’ Tarrasch QGD. Black is on the edge for a long time, but survives to a queen versus two rook endgame. Chris Talbot got a positional edge and turned it into a beautiful attack, upsetting Mark Anderson on board 9.

Round 4

Rory Chambers, now in command of first board, beat Larry Cohen as we saw in the featured game. Bill Orton beat Paul Covington’s London System (“the Businessman’s Opening”) in a pretty rook ending. In a seesaw game, Chris Baumgartner won a pawn as black in the opening, only to lose it back with a bad position after his queen got embarrassed,. This allowed Danial Smith a winning attack utilizing a stunning rook sacrifice. Young Howard Zhong is well known to Fayetteville players who play in Oklahoma tournaments. Here Howard Zhong wins a miniature, after Fayetteville’s Mack Howard is too slow in getting his pieces going.

Rory Chambers, leading by a half point, played Philador’s Defense as black against top seeded Bill Orton. After seeing Danial Smith and Howard Zhong draw on board two, Rory gave Bill a gift draw in a winning position to cinch first.
