rope towards the sky
DESCRIPTION
Panels for Sukkah City: NYC 2010 Competition Authors: Francisco Costa, Miguel Torres. “Rope Towards the Sky” aims to construct the sukkah with only one gesture, one element; one single rope. There is no distinction between the sukkah’s four walls and its schach. The four-sided surface that defines the walls intersects itself, transforming into schach and enclosing the sukkah.TRANSCRIPT

“Rope Towards the Sky” aims to construct the sukkah with only one gesture, oneelement; one single rope. There is no distinction between the sukkah’s four walls and itsschach. The four-sided surface that denes the walls intersects itself, transforming intoschach and enclosing the sukkah. This surface holds to a steel structure measuring 10 feetx 19 feet x 20 cubits, the maximum allowed volume.
Schach must be made of “something that once grew in the ground”, and is preparedspecically to be used as schach. A 2000 feet long rope made from manila hemp or othernatural ber could therefore be used as schach. It is the sukkahs’s most important andessential element, and so rightly tailor-made.
Our design questions current sukkah bulding materials and methods, anchoring itsdimensioning and shape in the most elemental biblical parameters.
