We understand the present to guide the future William Lund – Historian One of the most important pracces I try and maintain in my life is the pracce of seng goals for the future. I try and do this on many levels, ranging from the goals I set in how I want to parent my daughters to the goals I set in trying to keep up with the house project list, to the goals I set for myself as a Chrisan Educator. I believe to do this well, I need first to reflect on where I have come from, what mistakes I have made that I can learn from and how God has blessed my past. Maybe that is one of the reasons I find myself so drawn to the Psalms. They seem like an honest person’s dealings with life – thoughts, gratude and/or frustraon with what is or isn’t happening well - oſten followed by a cycle of reflecon on how God has moved in the past. In order for me to set goals this stage is absolutely crical even though I am oſten tempted to skip it. It gives context to the next stage. Secondly, I feel it is important that I take stock of where I am at right now, what is strong in my life as well as areas of weakness. For me, this takes me and real inner honesty before a God who knows my every thought and knit me together in my mother’s womb. This stage requires me to be sll and knowing that He is God and I’m not (ironically for me that ‘sllness’ usually happens when I am out of the house on a run or a walk). It is the combinaon of reflecon on the past and the present that begins to enable me to take steps in moving forward faithfully and purposefully. Surrey Chrisan School is going through a similar process this year, although on a much bigger scale in developing a strategic plan for the future. The board has already begun to spend me reflecng on where we have come from and where we are at. Later this week each family will receive an email link to a survey regarding the ‘state of the school.’ By the end of November I also hope to have gathered input from all staff members, from students, and, depending on our ability to contact them, alumni as well. Our goal is to garner input from every home represented at SCS regarding what is great about this place as well as what areas we need to put aenon to. This informaon will be used to draſt a strategic plan that will be presented to the community by the end of the school year (at the latest). This strategic plan will guide the board and administraon in decision-making and resource allocaon over the next few years. While a me-consuming process, it is also an excing process as it has to do with envisioning the future of Surrey Chrisan School. We have so much to be thankful for and so much more we can achieve based on the exceponally strong heritage of Chrisan Educaon that has shaped Surrey Chrisan School. I would like to invite you to: 1) reflect on where Surrey Chrisan has come from and where it is today, 2) ensure you take the me to complete your strategic plan survey, and 3) commit to praying for this process, that it will be used as tool to ensure Surrey Chrisan School connues to play a key part in building the Kingdom of God!

Educating for wholeness ishellipby Todd Bakker

Educating for wholeness is multi-faceted Initially I intended to answer the question of ldquoWhat does education for whole-ness mean to yourdquo by listing the plethora of learning styles in my science classroom and describing in detail how I aimed to meet the needs of every student who walked through my door While I believe that differentiation variation in content and expe-riential learning are essential components in successfully educating for wholeness I have realized in my short career as an educa-tor that those important topics are only a portion of what goes into the education of every student at Surrey Christian School

Educating for wholeness is seeking new ways to incorporate 21st century skills into all aspects of the curriculum Collaboration integration of technology presentation critical (or as Irsquove recently come to like hearing it ldquooutside of the boxrdquo) thinking and most importantly discernment are a few ways I have tried to ensure that when students come into my classroom they will be gaining skills that will help them work towards the career path of their choosing I have also labored to remove the engrained idea that science education is definite and precise (an idea that has permeated science education for years) by designing projects and assignments that encourage students to think ldquooutside of the boxrdquo and do original research with a finished product that may look different for each student Educating for wholeness has forced me to look at the way I assess student work and try to adapt my teaching style in such a way that assessment is more geared towards helping students learn rather than testing what they have learned

In his book ldquoEducation Nationrdquo Milton Chen comes to a remarkably simple conclusion that ldquothe world is changing but education is notrdquo I still vividly remember using Encarta as my sole resource for a paper on the Olympic Games in my grade seven year Now twelve years later (yes I realize that simple math will give away my young age) I am trying to use the wealth of resources here at Surrey Christian to educate students in a way that will prepare them for life in whatever manner they were created for Instead of seeing students as a blank slate to be filled with information (though some information is valuable and necessary) I want students to explore and struggle with their role as image bearers in Godrsquos world I desire for students to leave my classroom at the end of the year with a strong sense of what it means to be a Christian in an academic area where every part of creation shouts ldquoI am Hisrdquo Every student who walks through my classroom door is eventually going to enter into a world different from their grandparents parents or even older brothers and sisters walked into Educating for wholeness is understanding the reality that is facing our students and preparing them by facilitating learning of traditional curriculum based PLOrsquos (provincial learning outcomes) with 21st century skills

After almost 40 years of continuous fundraising for Fraser Valley Christian High School by selling crafts at Craft Fairs the Womenrsquos Circle recently decided to call it quits

In the Fall of 1972 a roomful of young women were meeting in the New Westminster Christian Reformed Church to talk about finding ways to make much needed money for the new Christian High School in Surrey The women all had young children at home and an older one attending high school Funds were badly needed for extracurricular activities for sports music and home economics The ladies decided to apply for tables at the yearly Charity Bazaar in Brentwood Mall in Burnaby which was held in February The women met weekly and worked hard at making attractive items for the sale The first sale was a huge success and the FVCHS Womenrsquos Circle was under way The women activated similar Craft Circles in other CRC churches in the Greater Vancouver area Considerable funds were

raised this way for many years This core of now older women in New Westminster and Surrey who cannot give up knitting and crocheting and least of all getting together are still at it today

With the recent school merger and name change and the malls discontinuing their Charity Bazaars we feel it is time to finally give it up Our last Craft Sale will be at the upcoming Elim Craft Fair on November 4 (from 6-9pm) and November 5 (from 10am ndash 3 pm) in the Oasis Building at Elim Village We hope to see parents and friends of the high school there to help us clear out our merchandise

The high school and its students have been faithfully served by this group of women for which we are deeply grateful We plan to celebrate their achievement and show them our gratitude later this fall
