What you can expect from Lafarge Roofing

“Whatever developments and new challenges arise,

our aim remains the same: to be the preferred

supplier of pitched roofing solutions worldwide, in

each of our local markets. To achieve this, we offer

a full range of products, systems and services and

we constantly develop innovative products and roof-

ing systems that meet our customers’ expectations

and are fit to suit their needs. All coming from one

source – our businesses in more than 40 countries.

Our sustainable approach means we develop high-

quality solutions and seek to establish long-term

relationships with our market partners. We constantly

re-evaluate market demands and aim to create new

markets in attractive growth segments.

As the global leader in roofing solutions, we feel it

is our role to shape the future of the industry. Using

our multi-local approach, global experience and

in-depth understanding of market trends and end

customers’ and business partners’ local needs, we

aim to offer them the best possible value.”

Dr. Ulrich Glaunach

Chief Executive Officer

Lafarge Roofing

Our markets and customers

New trends in the building industry.

Well-informed end customers.

Challenging business partners.

Changing legal requirements.

It is only natural that different customer groups should

require different things from their roofs and expect

different products and solutions from their supplier.

Aesthetics are very important to homeowners, who

also demand high-quality products and a broad choice

of products, systems and services. Those responsible

for constructing municipal buildings or office blocks

look for functionality, cost-effectiveness and durability

from the roof, and expect it to have an appropriate

appearance for the building. Architects, roofers, con-

struction companies, developers and the trade – our

business partners – also expect professional assistance

across the whole construction phase and place im-

portance on economic considerations.

However, these demands are evolving. It is a compe-

titive market, and we must always be aware of

new trends so that we can offer the best solutions.

■ There are new demands in aesthetics and design,

and a growing trend towards sustainable construc-

tion and differentiated bundles and packages.

■ Internet databases, search engines and electronic

product catalogues have meant that the end

customer is now much better informed and can

assume a more active role in the decision process.

■ In an increasingly competitive environment,

professional customers expect us to create more

value for their business and to be better than

our competitors.

■ Energy consumption restrictions, government

incentives and new legislation mean the market is

constantly changing. We must find new ways to

approach each project and ensure we provide our

customers with appropriate solutions.

Ultimately, a customer will make his decision on one

factor – value. In a changing environment, our chal-

lenge is to always understand our customers’ needs

and offer them solutions with real value. We will only

be able to establish successful, long-term relationships

by delivering total customer satisfaction.

4

“Our clients’ needs have changed. To stay competitive as an architect, I have to offer innovation, a wide choice of materials, a quality product and seamless processes.”

5

“This simple, convenient package offers the perfect combination of good looks and quality: it’s the ideal roofing solution for me and my family – and for our house.”

6

7

We cover end customers’ roofing needs

Protection from the elements.

Outstanding design.

Trouble-free installation.

Professional information.

Wherever we are operating, our end customers’

expectations are shaped by specific cultural, regional,

financial and personal factors. We offer packages

that meet their specific requirements for functionality,

quality and design, as well as their individual tastes.

Clear and reliable information and support during

the decision making process is important for our

customers. They want to be sure that they select the

right product for their requirements, get real value

for money and can feel confident in their choice.

Whatever the building – residential or commercial,

low-budget or luxury – our goal is to deliver well per-

forming roofing products. Our range is available in

a variety of materials, such as concrete, clay or metal,

in both traditional and modern styles.

We also offer an unmatched choice of designs and

colours, and a selection of surfaces, such as those that

have a smooth appearance, are long-lasting or are

dirt-repellent.

We offer a range of segment-specific solutions and

systems in convenient packages. These include low-

cost-housing, such as the Marulelo system in South

Africa, country-specific solutions, such as our low pitch

roof in Italy for non-residential buildings, and region-

specific products, such as the anti-storm roof package

popular in France. We also offer the Cool Roof

concept, an energy-saving roof system that keeps its

owners cool in tropical climates like Malaysia’s. In

many markets, we offer systems that harness solar

energy and collect rainwater. Where appropriate,

these packages also include guarantees and financial

plans. In selected regions, such as in the Netherlands

and Italy we deliver additional, country-specific roofing

solutions targeted at specific customer groups.

“The roofing business is a very competitive one, and we need supplierwho make our job easier. That way, we can deliver the best possibleresults for our customers.”

8

9

Needs of our market partners and how we meet them

Long-term relationships.

Ever-improving quality and functionality.

Precise work and skilled craftsmanship.

A perfect roof.

We aim to create value for our market partners –

if they are successful, we will be.

Our business units in more than 40 countries con-

stantly monitor their customers’ markets and business

environments, and work alongside roofers, distributors

and contractors to identify future market opportuni-

ties and develop strategies together. Our products and

services enable our market partners to provide tailor-

made solutions to their end customers. A broad range

of easy-to-lay tiles and off-the-shelf accessories reduce

work on-site, meaning that complete roofs can be

installed within hours. We also tailor offers to specific

segmented target groups and offer product bundles,

which prove very popular. We operate country-specific

roofer networks, such as the “Dakmeesters” in the

Netherlands and the “Toituriers de France”, in France

as well as distribution concepts in new build and reno-

vation like Tiilikatto Mestari in Finland, Fides in the

Netherlands and our merchants approach in Brazil

to deliver high-quality services to our customers. Add-

itionally we provide them with information on develop-

ments in the industry, train them in state-of-the-art

roofers’ skills and provide useful marketing tools. Our

services include:

■ Electronic planning tools and online information

State-of-the-art design applications and tendering

aids as well as web-based tools can produce images

of roofing solutions and accurately calculate costs.

■ Project related consulting

Services include pre- and post-sales advice and

support throughout the design and construction

process.

■ Roof installation

New approaches to logistics improve the efficiency

of our yard management and ease installation.

Roofing products can be delivered to the site on a

just-in-time basis and delivered on to the roof by

high crane.

■ Marketing and sales support, e-ordering tools

Our marketing tools help our partners win cus-

tomers and improve their profile. We provide attract-

ive brochures and point-of-sales materials, such

as tile displays and product samples. E-commerce

tools simplify the ordering process and make trans-

actions more efficient.

Our way of doing business is founded on creating

long-term, productive relationships with our market

partners. We aim to provide superior service and

create long-lasting value for them, so that we are

their preferred supplier. We want our partners to

notice this in everyday dealings, as well as in the

long-term.

Totally focused on our market partners’

business processes.

Providing a seamless service that ensures

a short and trouble-free construction phase.

We continually monitor our processes to ensure that

we deliver on our promises every time, and we have

been awarded several certificates and ISO standards

that prove we do this.

So that we can provide every individual customer with

exactly what they need, we have clearly defined our

various customer groups. Our business units develop

specific solutions for local markets with the success

of Lafarge as a whole in mind.

To ensure that we keep our promises, we constantly

monitor and improve our supply chain, ensuring that

all processes from ordering, production and delivery to

invoicing run seamlessly. To optimise all activities along

the customer chain, we have created OTIFIC (on-time,

in-full, invoiced correctly). This performance indicator is

used to identify where improvement is possible,

as well as anticipating future products and services.

Every employee is committed to meeting and exceed-

ing customer expectations, whether they work in call

centres, on the site, in applications engineering or in

sales.

A system implemented in France to monitor customer

satisfaction led to a significant reduction in the num-

ber of complaints, as well as the time taken to

respond to these. Customer feedback in Scandinavia

has been heeded, so that we focus our resources on

those areas that are most important to our customers.

We have created a turnkey solution in Italy called

Tettofatto for re-roofing projects including planning,

licensing and fixing. By redefining the supply chain in

Germany, our organisation is much more customer-

focused. We have established networks of certified

roofers, to ensure we deliver the best quality work-

manship in local markets. They also keep us in continu-

ous dialogue with our business partners, meaning we

can improve our processes to better fit their needs.

In short – we always strive to do whatever is necessary

to deliver on our promises.

10

We deliver on our promises, no matter what

“Construction want packages of prefabricated elements that requireminimal input from third parties. The right solution needs to be morethan cost-effective – the installation must run smoothly, and costs and timings must be transparent and predictable.”

11

“As tradesmen, if we are to deliver customer satisfaction and be success-ful in our local market, we have to be able to rely on our suppliers. We need close working relationships with them, and comprehensivesales and marketing support.”

12

Research & Development: Constantly rejuvenating our offer

Leveraging our global experience.

Spearheading innovation in our industry.

Anticipating tomorrow’s needs.

We aim to be at the forefront of our industry in terms

of product, system and service innovation, and to

deliver the best value solutions to our customers.

We devote more resources to research & development

than any other roofing company in the world. More-

over, as part of the Lafarge Group, we have unrivalled

access to research & development expertise.

Through developing new business models and installa-

tion techniques, we stay at the cutting edge of inno-

vation. We work with our market partners to convert

ideas and trends in local markets into new, creative

products that benefit our customers around the world,

and we are able to draw on our experience in one

market to resolve issues in others. We are also com-

mitted to facilitate sustainable construction, and

are launching more and more products that achieve

this, as well as reducing the amount of waste that

results from their production.

By leveraging our experience and resources, we de-

velop innovations that meet the needs of today’s, as

well as tomorrow’s, market. For example:

■ Re-roofing concepts that are conserving local envir-

onments and historical buildings yet utilise modern

technology.

■ New smooth surfaces that are dirt-repellent and

thus more durable against dust, grime and algae.

■ New approaches in the low pitch sector to extend

the areas of application of our products and services.

■ Continual development of functional, practical fea-

tures, e.g. extra-large tiles that are more economic

and quicker to lay.

■ In the chimney sector, Schiedel has created new

products that meet the requirements of sustainable

construction. These include Absolut, a balanced

flue system for low energy and passive houses, and

Area, an energy-saving ventilation system that

corresponds with our sustainable construction

approach.

New products and developments require extensive

testing and redesigned production processes. By work-

ing closely with product designers and materials scien-

tists at our Technical Centres, we ensure that all of our

products and systems are fully functional, highly

durable and meet every detail of their technical speci-

fications.

We are constantly striving to become more competi-

tive and improve our business processes, both from an

industrial perspective as well as from a sales and mar-

keting point of view. Our worldwide performance

programs ensure we do everything we can to achieve

this. That way, our customers continue to benefit

from the experience and innovative power of a global

company.

13

14

Cross-functional teams.

Commitment to quality.

Achieving our global aims in local markets.

In a changing environment, we should act as a guide

and consultant to our customers. Every employee

should work to this aim and seek to improve perform-

ance and customer loyalty – the true measure of our

success.

Multi-local management is our way of realising global

targets by concentrating on local markets. Our man-

agers work as part of an international team and

exchange knowledge, transfer and adapt good prac-

tices, and use the expertise and experience of a global

player to solve local issues. At all levels of our busi-

ness, our people work in cross-functional and cross-

border teams to ensure everyone benefits from our

collective experience and knowledge. This also means

that we offer the same high standards to our cus-

tomers, wherever in the world they may be.

Our priority is to attract and retain people who have

a passion for exceeding customer expectations. All

employees are encouraged to display imagination,

sound craftsmanship and technical skills, good cus-

tomer focus and entrepreneurial spirit. Our managers

are expected to lead by example.

We believe that everyone in our company should be

set clear objectives, receive honest feedback, and have

clearly-defined career prospects. Our Performance

Management System helps to identify areas where

our employees excel, as well as those where more

development is needed. This involves setting personal

objectives, appraisal interviews and 360-degree feed-

back.

Careers at Lafarge offer excellent prospects for inter-

national development, as employees can access

opportunities throughout the entire Group, across all

four divisions. International management programmes

and the Lafarge University help our employees fulfill

their potential within the Group.
