BS 5534

BS 5534 is a British Standard covering the design, materials, application, installation and performance of slates, tiles, shingles and shakes. BS 5534:2014 is more than a simple update to the standard. It reflects some of the most significant changes in the roofing industry during the past 50 years.

Although more far reaching, the main areas that will concern day to day roofing are the minimum fixings for the roof covering, batten, underlay, and mortar.

SINGLE-LAP TILES DOUBLE-LAP TILES

DOUBLE-LAP SLATES, STONE SLATES OR ARTIFICIAL SLATES

WOODEN SHINGLES AND SHAKES

For all roof areas and rafter pitches, mechanically fix every tile*. For rafter pitches of 45° and above, nail each tile with at least one nail. Additionally, for rafter pitches of 55° and above, including vertical, the tail of each tile should be mechanically fixed.At verges and abutments, and at each side of valleys and hips, the end tile in every course should be mechanically fixed.At eaves and top edges, one course of tiles should be mechanically fixed.

*Mechanical fixings may be nails, screws and clips or a combination of all options that provide adequate combined resistance to the total wind uplift loads on the tiles.

For nibless tiles, two nails should be used to secure every tile. For nibbed tiles at rafter pitches below 60°, two nails should be used to secure each tile in at least every fifth course. For rafter pitches of 60° and above, including vertical, two nails should be used to fix every tile. At verges and abutments, and at each side of valleys and hips, the end tile in every course should be twice nailed where possible, or mechanically fixed. At eaves and top edges, two courses of tiles (consisting of under-eaves courses and first full course at eaves, last full course and tops course at top edges) should be nailed or otherwise mechanically fixed.

Double-lap slates should have a minimum of two nails to every slate when centre nailed. Double-lap slates without nail holes should be fixed by hooks engaged on the centre of the tail of the slate. Special considerations may apply to their use at pitches greater than 70° and pitches lower than 30°. Double-lap fibre cement slates are normally secured with two nails to every slate and a copper disc rivet connecting the tail on the centreline of the slate to the two slates below through the gap between them. Special considerations apply to double-lap slates that are head fixed or shoulder fixed (see Technical Bulletin 4311 published by the NFRC).

Wooden shingles and shakes should have a minimum of two nails or staples to every shingle or shake when centre-nailed. Special considerations may apply to other types of fixing (see manufacturer’s instructions and Technical Bulletin 3412 published by the NFRC).

UNDERLAYS

A new test method in BS 5534 establishes the resistance to wind uplift of the underlay. Stricter recommendations for the securement of the laps of the underlay and a new labelling system has been introduced, to assist with the specification of underlays in five UK geographical wind zones for single-lap and double-lap tiles, and doublelap slates. Only underlays suitably labelled and meeting the new standard should be installed and laps should be covered by a batten or secured by a proprietary sealant tape and laid with a nominal 10mm drape to allow a drainage path for moisture and prevent excessive deflection under wind load. A batten tape or sealant should be used where the underlay is not self-sealing to prevent water ingress at fixing points.

MORTAR

Mortar is now deemed to have no tensile strength, so any tensile bond strength offered by the mortar bedding of concrete or clay ridge and ridged hip tiles, verge and valley tiles should be supplemented by mechanical fixings to secure them to the roof structure where the wind uplift load exceeds the dead load resistance. Heritage solutions where lime mortar is often used is excluded from the scope of the standard.

ROOFING BATTENS

Roofing battens must meet the recommendations stated in BS 5534 in terms of their species, permissible characteristics and defects (knots, fissures and splits, wane, slope of grain, rate of growth, distortion, decay and insect attack, sap stain, resin pockets and moisture content), including minimum dimensions and grading requirements.All documentation with a roofing batten delivery must include:

• Name of supplier (the company that graded the roofing battens NOT the company that cut them)

• Origin

• Graded in accordance with BS 5534

• Basic size

• Type of preservative (if applicable) Counter battens need not be marked or graded where they are fully supported by the rafters, but this should be considered if counter battens are being used to create a ventilation gap for moisture purposes.

BS 5534 ROOFING BATTEN

The new British Standard is clear, roofing battens must be graded to BS 5534.Battens delivered to site should be graded and marked in accordance with the new standard and have supporting documentation.

Compliant battens will show:SupplierOrigin/Species CodeBS 5534 stampSize

A batten can only be marked BS 5534 if it has already been fully graded and is compliant.You can be sure that we take the change in regulations seriously at Buildbase and our chosen supplier, John Brash, have invested £750,000 on Goldeneye, Europe’s only dedicated roof batten scanning line.

This ensures battens are fully compliant to the highest standard to get the job done and give you peace of mind.

EAVEMASTER FASCIA

A combination of classic styling and superior finish combine to give Eavemaster its highly distinctive appearance.Eavemaster Fascia is available in two design styles - ‘Ogee’ and ‘Plain’, each available in white or black. Two board thicknesses - 10mm and 18mm - are produced to suit all types of application.10mm boards are internally ribbed to provide additional strength and support.

EAVEMASTER SOFFIT & CLADDING

Two styles of soffit provide a choice of finish to match the fascia. By combining them with either ‘Ogee’ or ‘Plain’ fascia, a variety of options can be achieved which are sympathetic to all building types.The hollow – section ‘planked – effect’ board provides a classic soffit, and is also suitable for use as a cladding profile. It is easily fixed horizontally, vertically or diagonally and is available in two widths: 100mm & 300mm. Its tongue and groove profile reduces installation time without compromising the finished effect.The ‘flat’ soffit finish can be achieved by use of the multi-purpose flat board with its smooth, more modern finish and is available in widths ranging from 100mm to 405mm.Both soffit boards are available in white or black and are complemented by a full range of trims and joints, completing a system that will remain pleasant to the eye.

PITCHED ROOF CONSTANTS

To calculate the length of Rise, rafter or Hip / Valley multiply the run by the required constant corresponding to the appropriate pitch.

EXAMPLE 1) USING TABLE THEREFORE

Pitch = 35° Rafter = Run x 1.22

Span = 6.16 = 3.08 x 1.22 = 3.76m

Run = 3.08 Hip = 3.08 x 1.58 = 4.87m

ii) By Scale drawing i.e using the scale, rule to reproduce the legth of the rafter and in our case the run away from from the corner of the paper (90) and scaling the resulting valley or hip measurement.
