A Message from the Principal:

Spring is here! It’s hard to believe we have about 40 days of school left for the year. Where

did the time go? It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming our energetic new 6th graders

to the building. They were so nervous, yet so excited, but look at them now! They are almost

7th graders. I’m so very proud of them, and parents, I know you are too. Your wonderful

children have almost completed one full year of middle school. It makes your heart flutter

doesn’t it? Okay, enough of the tear jerkers. Let’s talk about the remainder of the year.

Our young scholars continue to impress the Reagan instructional staff by excelling each

quarter as the curriculum becomes more rigorous and as they prepare for SOLs in May. Our

8th graders, have tackled one of five SOLs given at the 8th grade level. They took the Writing

SOL in March and will take a SOL in each academic discipline, Reading, Mathematics,

Science, and History. Our 6th and 7th graders will take SOLs in Reading and Mathematics.

Our students are doing a great job preparing by staying focused and having good self-

discipline. Additionally, we are currently offering additional support such as Math Academy

and Reading Academy either, before, during, or after school. We encourage our scholars to

take advantage of these opportunities. April 29 will be our annual SOL kick off PEP Rally

and then, on May 4, we kick off the SOLs. More information about the schedule is in this

newsletter and also posted on our website.

My Reagan family, as we head into the last 40 days of school, I ask that you continue to

show your amazing support by reminding your students to adhere to PWCS Code of

Behavior and the Reagan RIDER expectations. Unfortunately, the administration is seeing

more infractions lately; most are minor. However, some are violations that students may not

always think are as serious as they are. Conversely, any violation of the Code of Behavior

will warrant some type of action. Therefore, I ask for your continued partnership in helping

to direct our young scholars in the right direction, for we, the adults know, they will make

mistakes as young adolescents. Nonetheless, we want them to grow and learn from their

mistakes and not to repeat them.

June is a very busy month also. This year, we will invite all 8th grade parents to attend the 8th

Grade Awards and promotion ceremony, which will be held during the school day on June

13. Because we have 470 students, we will recognize all students, but in their respective

teams. The time for each of the three ceremonies will be placed on the website and 8th grade

parents will receive an official invite. There is more to come. It’s going to be great day and

we hope to see you all there to send our rising 9th graders off to high school the right away.

Wow! Did I just say that parents? Yes, your child will be going to high school! Okay, I’m

ending this with a tear jerker as well.

As always, thank you for allowing me to serve as the proudest principal!

Helping Families in Any Language

In order to support families who speak all languages other than

English, PWCS will soon have available many important documents in

several languages. The school division is also working on an enhanced

Translation Services webpage that will allow families to complete a

questionnaire and request assistance in their own language. At every

school there will be a visible poster that will allow families to select a

language when they are in need of assistance in their language. Schools

will also have interpretation services available. Currently, the school

division website has an enhanced Google Translate feature that

provides instant translation assistance in dozens of languages. Note

that computer generated translations has its limitations, but this feature

moves us forward in serving the needs of our students in an increasing-

ly diverse community. Please feel free to contact the school if you are

in need of assistance in another language.

Safety Reminders

A change in going home for your student: Please remember to send a note and

have your child to report to office for a special pass to either walk home, go home

with a friend, or ride a different bus. We understand emergencies may come up. If and

when they do, please call our office to speak with an administrator.

Speed limits during this dismissal: Arr ival and dismissal of our students involves

staff assisting with traffic to ensure our student enter and leave the building safely.

Please drive very slowly once you enter the parking lots and remember to move

forward when directed.

Safety drills: We are required to have fire dr ills monthly. When possible, we

work around inclement weather and testing. However, drills are unannounced as we

must have authentic practices. When drills are conducted, ALL students and staff

must exit the building. If there are medical concerns, please make sure our school

nurse has this information on file.

May 30, 2016 Schools are Closed

Congratulations! Reagan Middle School’s very own 8th grade stand-

out, Henry Radzikowski, has been making remarkable waves as of

late in swimming pools all along the east coast. Henry recently broke

a 15-year old Potomac Marlin’s record in the one mile Free Style. He

also earned 1st place in the entire Potomac Valley Swimming in 500

free style and achieved qualifying times for the Zone & Sectional

Championships.

While most of us were relaxing on Spring Break, Henry represented

Potomac Valley Swimming in Buffalo, New York for the Zone

Championship. During the Zone Championship Henry won two

events; 500 yard and 1 mile free style events. He also finished 3rd in

the 200.

We would like to congratulate Henry on his accomplishments thus far

and we are sure that he will continue adding to his achievements in

the future. We are proud to call him a Mustang.

Introducing 2015-16 PTSO Executive Board

PTSO Meeting

May 11, 2016

6:30 p.m.

PTSO Movie

Night - May 13

The PTSO is an independent, non-profit organization composed of parents, teachers, and students. The organization meets on the second Wednesday of each month in the library at 6:30 p.m.

Desiree Moore, President

Erin Sedgley, Vice President

Angie Tarr, Secretary

Scott Mras, Treasurer

TBD Member At-Large

“ Work so hard that one day your signature will be called an autograph.”

For safety and supervision reasons, students must have a pass to

walk or be driven to or from school. The appropriate pass can be

obtained by returning the enclosed permission form. Once a school

staff member has verified the form with a parent, either by phone

or in person, the appropriate pass will be issued to the student.

This form is also available on the school website. Students with-

out the appropriate pass will not be permitted to walk or be driven

home without a parent or guardian coming to the school’s main

office to sign them out.

How does this work? All walkers and car riders are given a lami-

nated pass to attach to their agenda. As they exit the building

through door #2, the staff member in charge will check for the pass

and allow for them to leave.

Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students,

We wanted to reach out to all of you and share that as a PTSO it is a privilege and honor to help support

all of YOU! We are so impressed with all of the students and staff that go the extra mile both academi-

cally and by participating in after school activities both at school and on their own – whether it is

sports, dance, music, theatre, science fairs, debate teams… the list goes on. Reagan Mustangs ROCK –

and they ROCK because of the great collaboration between the parents, teachers, and students!

As a PTSO, in small ways we have been able to support some of these groups and clubs. In big ways,

we try and hold 3-4 large scale events for the kids to enjoy and participate in. We do all of these things

thru the sale of our spirit wear and membership dues. WE WANT TO DO MORE and WE HAVE

MORE TO DO – but we still need your help! WHAT CAN YOU DO (in your already busy schedule)?

1. I want to encourage all of you that if you are not yet a member of this year’s PTSO, IT’S

NOT TOO LATE…. Cost is only $10.00. Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the

Month for one hour at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Remaining schedule is May 11 and June 8. If

you cannot join us for these meetings – its OKAY, we understand – but please know that

they really are very informative and you definitely get a pulse on what is happening in and

around Reagan.

2. We are in the PRE-Planning/INTEREST Stages of a SPRING EVENT (no date yet) as well

as the 8th Grade Dance – which will be held on Friday, June 3. In addition, this year the

school we will be holding a promotion ceremony. It is going to take a lot of hands to make

this happen. I’d like to encourage all of our 6th and 7th grade families to consider volunteer-

ing for this event once we have a date and more concrete info, in way of paying it forward –

so that the 8th grade families have an opportunity to enjoy the full event . Anyone who thinks

they “may” be interested in helping with any of these events – please contact us (info will be

below).

SPRING EVENT: MOVIE NIGHT: May 13, 2016

8th Grade Dance - Friday, June 3

Speaking of contact, one of our main goals this year as a PTSO Board was and is to ensure that all par-

ents, teachers, and students have the ability to contact us, ask us questions, or support and have feed-

back given back to them in a timely manner. Our main email account is managed primarily by our Sec-

retary, Mrs. Angie Tarr – as she receives messages she notifies myself and/or our VP, Mrs. Erin

Sedgley. Emails are answered back within 24 hours. Feedback over this has been very positive. In addi-

tion, the PTSO re-activated a Reagan Facebook site. Again, Angie Tarr, primarily manages this account

but members of the executive board have access to this as well. All of us post or answer questions on

this account. With a new website and capabilities being brought on line by the county we may integrate

next year to a new way of communication but until the school year ends and thru the summer you will

be able to contact your board by emailing: [email protected] and not to be cliché but we en-

courage you to “LIKE US ON FACEBOOK” @ www.facebook.com/rrms.ptso.

Last but not least, I spoke above about how it is such a privilege for all of us to give back to the school,

Page 20: Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School Mustang News · Mustang News “Learn, Achieve, Succeed, Contribute” Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School s w z r s Tanning House Place| Haymarket,

20

the kids, teachers and staff…. But that’s not all…. Volunteering at the school this year has been

such a joy for all of us – whether a committee chair or one night parent volunteer to support an

event! Middle School is such a neat and exciting time for kids to really come into one’s own – to

see the transformation of some of these students turning into young adults is really the coolest thing

ever. With elections coming up in the next year and all the negative talk about real problems our

local government and nation faces – I feel certain there is nothing our next generation of kids

cannot resolve…. Reagan Kids take to heart the motto, “Learn, Achieve, Succeed, Contribute”!

In the next few months we will be reaching out again to all of you to consider taking on the reins of

next year’s PTSO BOARD! If you have any questions about what we do, time involved, or know

someone who would be a really good fit for a board or committee please contact us. If you have

any ideas on things we can do our offer we welcome your input as well.

Kindest regards,

Desiree Moore

Would you like to know more about the Ronald Reagan Advisory Council?

Come join us.

The Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School Advisory council provides stakeholder input to the

principal, school administration and faculty on the development, implementation, and assessment of the

annual strategic plan and budget. The council will meet on selected Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30

p.m. during the 2016 -17 school year. If it is necessary to call an unscheduled meeting, notification will

be made on the Reagan website at least a week in advance, when possible.

Below is an overview of some of the topics the council will address in addition to other matters brought

before the council by stakeholders for consideration.

Tdap Immunization Requirement

All rising 6th graders MUST have a Tdap booster shot before starting middle school on August 31, 2016!

Please forward your child’s updated immunization record to the school nurse.

For any questions, contact your school nurse.

Student Medication

All of your student’s unused mediation must be picked up from the school nurse

before the last day of school. Please make arrangements to do so with the school

nurse as soon as possible. If unused medication is not picked up by the last day of

school, it will be disposed of by school personnel.

Keep Kids Safe for Summer

Kids like to dive into summer to relax, unwind, and have fun. Warm weather brings more opportunity to enjoy

the outdoors. Here are some ways to stay safe while enjoying swimming, boating, hiking, biking, and more.

Check out more tips at Make Summer Safe for Kids.

Be safe at home, work, and play

Most childhood injuries can be prevented. Injuries are the

leading cause of death in children aged 19 and younger.

Play it safe on the playground. Each year in the United

States, emergency departments treat more than 200,000

children aged 14 and younger for playground-related inju-

ries. Learn what to do if a concussion occurs. A concus-

sion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump,

blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your

brain normally works.

Stay smart around the house by following tips on fire pre-

vention, microwave use, and living with pets.

Prevent injuries. Protect the ones you love.

Help working teens learn about safety and health on the job.
