EXPANDING OUR CAPACITY TO CARE FOR THOSE IN NEED.

2014 was a year of growth and new opportunities for the Ronald McDonald House at Parkview. We welcomed nearly 700 families into the Ronald McDonald House last year. Seven hundred individual families built bonds over shared meals and stories in the Ronald McDonald House, and we were privileged to help them all.

We launched the Hope is Growing in the House that Love Built campaign in late 2014 to support the expansion of the Ronald McDonald House. The project, which added four new guest rooms, opened to families in May 2015. The expansion makes the Ronald McDonald House at Parkview one of the largest inhospital Ronald McDonald Houses in the world. We would love to have you stop by the House to see our changes. 

In 2014, we also hosted our inaugural Ride RMHC cycling event. It was a great first year allowing us to make many new friends and raise more than $23,000 for the Ronald McDonald House. We are grateful and excited each year to see the number of people who come out to participate in our events. Whether it’s Ride RMHC, Rhinestone Rodeo or Run4Ronald, seeing the support of our community and sponsors is truly uplifting.

Our goal each year is to improve our program to find new and better ways to care for RMH families. In 2014, serving evening meals became a priority for us, and we worked to provide warm meals at least three times each week. Internally, we improved our referral process so we could be sure we were helping the parents with the greatest need first. While staying in the House, guests enjoyed regular visits from our namesake, Ronald McDonald, as well as meeting our friends from Three Rivers Visiting Dogs and their furry “volunteers.” 

We are grateful to the donors who support our program so generously, the inkind donors who provide many services that support our mission, and the volunteers who give their time week after week to help our families feel at home.

Last year was an exciting year for the Ronald McDonald House as our board, staff, and volunteers worked on strengthening our service to the community. We are fortunate, and unique in our ability, to offer the comforts of the RMH at no cost to families. This would not be possible without the steadfast help we receive from our community. AN EVENTFUL YEAR OF RAISING FUNDS & AWARENESS.

• Therapy Dog Thursday in the RMH with our friends from Three Rivers Visiting Dogs, Inc. • Kylee and Mike with their twin girls, Emma and Lydia, headed home after 56 days in the Ronald McDonald House. • Rhinestone Rodeo 2014 was a huge success; more than $115,000 was raised for RMH families. Mark your calendars for Friday, September 11, 2015.

• The Red Shoe Crew, a group of young professionals who work to promote the mission of the Ronald McDonald House, serve Valentine’s Day dinner in the House.

• The Run4Ronald team is a charity partner of Fort4Fitness. In 2014, runners and walkers of all ages helped us raise more than $27,000 for the Ronald McDonald House.

• The Ronald McDonald House keeps moms, and dads, and big brothers and sisters close to their hospitalized loved ones.

• New in 2014 was Ride RMHC, a cycling event which brought out nearly 200 riders and raised more than $23,000!

T All the families come together, and we talk and tell our stories. It’s good to know you’re not the only one going through this situation. Here in the RMH, you don’t have to feel so alone.”

THE POWER OF PEACE OF MIND. Allison , Adelyn, Jacie & Drew

AT THE TIME, WE THOUGHT WE WOULD BE IN THE HOUSE FOR A WEEK OR SO.

Pregnant last year with my second child, I was enjoying a normal pregnancy until my 27th week when I was admitted to Parkview with preterm labor. We didn’t know if our baby would survive or what complications he or she might have. Everyone expected me to deliver the day I was admitted, but God had a different plan. I spent over five weeks in the hospital on bed rest. This was a very difficult time for my husband and me as we couldn’t be at home with our daughter, Adelyn. Finally, I stabilized enough that I didn’t need hospital care. However, I lived 45 minutes away from the hospital, and my doctor didn’t want me that far from the hospital if labor started again. My doctor suggested I stay at the Ronald McDonald House. At the House, I was just steps away from labor and delivery plus my family could come visit me in a much more comfortable environment.

We were amazed at how nice our room was at the House. We had our own bathroom, which was a huge plus, and a TV to keep me entertained during the day since I spent most of the day in bed. Each day, we would go out to the dining area to eat our meals. Each staff member was friendly and encouraged us along our difficult journey; they were the uplifting spirit we needed. The volunteers and staff always went above and beyond to make us comfortable. During our five week stay in the RMH, our daughter, Adelyn, turned two years old. My parents brought Adelyn to the House, and we were able to have a wonderful evening celebrating her birthday. Throughout our stay other visitors came to see us, and it was so nice and relaxing to sit and talk in the large gathering room.

At 36 weeks and 6 days, I went into labor again.  Thankfully, all we needed to do was walk down the  hall to labor and delivery.

Today, we are home with our little miracle, Jacie, and her big sister, Adelyn. We were so blessed that Jacie didn’t need to spend any time in the newborn intensive care unit when she was born. We cannot thank the Ronald McDonald House donors, staff, and volunteers enough for what they provided for us. If home wasn’t where we could be, the Ronald McDonald House was the next best thing.

 THE POWER OF TOGETHERNESS. Amonté, Breanna & Amiyah

TO SAY BREANNA MARTIN HAD A BUSY YEAR WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT.

To say Breanna Martin had a busy year would be an understatement. On January 30, 2014, Breanna was surprised by the birth of her daughter, Amiyah, born seven weeks early. Breanna lived in the Ronald McDonald House for 50 days waiting for Amiyah to be healthy enough to go home. 

Another surprise was in store for Breanna when she found out she was pregnant with her second child, due just 11 months after Amiyah. However, little brother, Amonté, arrived four weeks early. Thankfully, Breanna’s doctors were prepared for another early delivery and had worked to ensure little Amonté was ready for life outside the womb. 

After 60 days in the Ronald McDonald House, comfortable is the first word Breanna uses to describe the House. “Everyone makes you feel so comfortable. The guest rooms are like a home.” Breanna didn’t have transportation during her first stay so she would not have been able to get to the hospital when, and as often, as she wanted. “Without the Ronald McDonald House, I would have been stuck at home waiting on a ride to get to the hospital.”

“After Amonté was born, there wasn’t a guest room immediately available. We waited almost 2 weeks. It was uncomfortable sleeping in Amonté’s room, and, worst, I wasn’t able to keep Amiyah with me,” remembers Breanna. “My mom would drop her off every morning and pick her up every evening. During the day I was trying to care for Amonté and entertain an active 10 month old… the Ronald McDonald House is so much better.”

Breanna’s mother, Sahira, was able to spend a lot of time in the House supporting Breanna. “The Ronald McDonald House has been a lifesaver,” says Sahira, “I kept Amiyah until Breanna got a room, but it was difficult. Amiyah wanted her mommy, especially at bedtime. I am so grateful the Ronald McDonald House was available to us. Breanna is a young adult with a baby. I was able to rest peacefully at night knowing they were safe. ” 

Both Breanna and her mom sing the praises of all the volunteers they met. “These volunteers are giving their time, their lives to help others; we are so grateful.”

THE POWER OF COMPASSION. Diane & Mindy

MAKING SURE FAMILIES ARE COMFORTABLE AND HAVE WHAT THEY NEED.

Diane and Mindy Martin are a mother daughter volunteer 

team who can relate to the needs of RMH families. Diane 

and Mindy’s first experience with the Ronald McDonald 

House was in March of 2005 when Diane’s grandson, and 

Mindy’s nephew, 11 month old Xander was diagnosed with 

a rare malignant brain tumor. Xander was sent to Cincinnati 

Children’s Hospital Medical Center. For the next 8 months, 

Diane and Xander’s mother, Valerie, lived in the Ronald 

McDonald House next door to the hospital. Aunt Mindy, 

along with the rest of the family, would visit on weekends. 

Xander underwent a number of surgeries and 

chemotherapies during his stay, but was thankfully

After taking early retirement during Xander’s treatment, 

Diane found herself missing her job once she was back 

home. She started volunteering for local organizations and 

learned of the Ronald McDonald House through a friend. 

Diane started her Sunday 9a.m. – 12p.m. shift in February 

of 2006 and has been doing it ever since. “My family and 

I know what it’s like to be in their (the families’) shoes. 

I enjoy making sure the families are comfortable and have 

what they need.”  Mindy started as a substitute for the 

House in 2009 and joined her mom on the Sunday shift in 

2012, “I enjoy helping families feel comfortable and at ease 

during a scary and unknown time in their lives. Sometimes 

they just want to talk and I am here to listen.”

For more than six years, the Martins have been making 

the Ronald McDonald House a home for families in need, 

families whose circumstances they understand all too well.

Diane and Mindy, along with the many other RMH 

volunteers, are the reason the Ronald McDonald House 

always feels like a home.
