The Marriott Hotel ban- quet room was filled to capacity for the 29th Person of the Year Award Dinner, held on Friday, May 2, 2014 in honor of Judge Brian Oakley. Bill Kren, Executive Director of the Rom- ulus Chamber of Commerce, served as emcee for this gala event. After a warm wel- come, he shared a few words on the significance of the award. “You know, some people start out their careers with the dreams of winning their professions top honor, like an Acad- emy Award for movies or a Noble Peace Prize in literature or entering a Hall of Fame … in the community of Romulus we believe the most prestigious honor is the Romulus Chamber of Person of the Year award! Kren shared the history of the honor, mentioning the very first inductee, Bill Simons (who was represented by his daughter, Lynn Conway). A number of previous Persons of the Year honoree’s were also in attendance. Standing as their names were called, Dan Bales, Bill Crane, Harlan Whichello, Ron Hopson, Maria Lambert, Linda McNeil, Mark Lewkowicz, Julie Allison, Rick Perry and Pat and Lynn Ostrowski were recognized with a warm applause. Judge Oakley was invited to the podium and was presented with a number of awards and proclamations. First up was a framed proclamation and congratulations from Governor Rick Snyder, State Senator Hoon-Young Hop- good, and State Rep. Doug Geiss. Romulus Mayor LeRoy Burcroff declared May 2nd as Brian A. Oak- ley Day. Mayor Pro- Tem John Barden pre- sented the Judge with a City Council Res- olution that congratulated and praised Oakley on his many accomplishments. The last award, a beautiful wood plague engraved with words of appreciation, was presented to Judge Oakley by Mark Lewkowicz, Vice-President of the Romu- lus Chamber and Chairman of the Person of the Year Committee. What an event! The Marriott Hotel ban-

quet room was filled to capacity for the

2014 Person of the Year Awards Banquet

Tuning Up For Summer Fun at Links at Gateway Golf Course

On May 15th the Romulus Cham-

ber of Commerce and Links at

Gateway Golf Course teamed up

for a free golf clinic with course

pro Craig Piscopink. Craig soon

had Chamber members looking

like pro’s (almost). It was an en-

joyable afternoon at the driving

range!

The May 20th Romulus Chamber of

Commerce Business Luncheon was

held at the Hilton Garden Inn—

Detroit Metro Airport, in Romulus.

Wayne County Executive Robert

Ficano was the guest speaker -

bringing an update on the County

and answering questions.

Following his presentation, the 2014

-2015 Romulus Chamber Board of

Directors were sworn in by Mr. Fica-

no. They are: Julie Allison, Pete

Bergeron, Terry Bridges, Bill Crane,

Harley Fisher, Dave Goodwin, Tim

Keyes, Mark Lewkowicz, Jakleen

Ochalek, Oscar Rhoton, Jim Napior-

kowski, Cecile Taylor, Larry Wil-

liams, Susan Wyputa and Chuck

Zuerner.

Public Service Credit Union is pos-ing a challenge to community mem-bers this year: save $500,000 in loan interest and help local chari-ties.

To help raise awareness of the local charities involved, PSCU hosted an open house event at their main branch in Romulus on Friday, May 2

nd from 11AM-3PM. Lunch was

provided as well as a Shred It Truck available to shred any important

documents, pets from the Romu-lus/Brownstown Animal Shelter were ready for adoption, fun inflat-able’s, giveaways, games and a ton of information was readily available on these charities! Spe-cial guest Mrs. Michigan 2013- Jennifer McMahan- was available for autographs and pictures on behalf of Champions against Bul-lying. Mayor Burcroff presented the key to the city to each repre-sentative of the charities. Pictured
