1. The first stage of the m

ain route, which is around 17 ki-

lometres, departs from

Alar de Rey, just by the docks of

the Canal de C

astilla. There, coal was loaded in order to

be distributed all along the meseta. A

fter leaving this tow

n behind and crossing the Pisuerga River, the rou-te goes through crop plains and cliffs betw

een pine stands and pastures on hills, w

hile passing by Prádanos de O

jeda, Santibáñez de Ecla (where the first exam

ple of the Rom

anesque that gives its name to this route, the

church of San Juan, can be found) and Villaescusa de Ecla. This stage ends w

hen arriving to Cozuelos de Ojeda.

2. The longest stage of the three that m

ake up this route, w

ith almost 28 km

, goes through the north-eastern bor-ders of La O

jeda region, allowing the traveller to enjoy

some am

azing panoramic view

s when the path gains al-

titude (La Ruya, Peña Um

oma). It goes across the tow

ns of C

ozuelos de Ojeda, Vallespinoso de A

guilar (pas-sing by the beautiful Rom

anesque hermitage of Santa

Cecilia), D

ehesa de Montejo and Vado. From

the fi-nal step of this stage, the nearby tow

n of Cervera de Pisuerga can be visited.

Vallespinoso, a branch lets the trave-ller peek in the lands of A

guilar de Cam

poo and sight

its reservoir, as well as visit Barrio de San Pedro and

Barrio de Santa María (and the church of San A

ndrés in the form

church of La Asunción in the latter).

oal Route (which is 21,2 km

long) starts along w

ith the Pisuerga River, passing by Ligüerzana or Barcenilla de Pisuerga, and then cros-ses the river and heads N

orth, going past Rueda de Pisuerga, Vallespinoso de Cervera and San Cebrián de M

udá. Living up to the nature trail’s name, in these

towns it w

ill be possible to visit more Rom

anesque tre-asures, such as the churches of San C

ristóbal (Rueda de Pisuerga), San Juan Bautista (Vallespinoso de Cervera) or San C

ornelio and San Cipriano (San Cebrián de

Mudá). The m

ain route of this nature trail ends in the intersection w

ith the historic trail GR-1, after passing by

the Reserve and Interpretation Centre of the European Bison, right in the m

iddle of the Natural Park of Fuentes

Carrionas and Fuente C

obre-Montaña Palentina.

etre route is one of the two alternative rou-

tes that go together with the C

oke Coal Route. It goes

through the wavy territory of La O

jeda among landsca-

pes shaped by the Burejo River, surrounded by crop fields

and some sm

all oak and pine woods. D

uring the route, the Rom

anesque churches of San Juan (Santibañez de Ecla), San Juan Bautista (M

oarves de Ojeda) or Santa

Justa and Santa Rufina (in Payo de Ojeda) can be visi-

ted. This region hides as well other beautiful exam

ples of the Spanish and European Rom

anesque, such as the m

onasteries of San Andrés and Santa Eufem

ia.

ánico Palentino Nature Trail.

It starts in Stage 2 of the Coke C

oal Route, 1 km from

ampos

and the rocky wall form

ed by the first peaks of the C

antabrian Range. Throughout the trail, the traveller keeps discovering the Palentinian Rom

anesque when

passing by the church of Nuestra Señora de la A

sunción and the herm

itage of San Pelayo (Perazancas de Ojeda),

the church of San Esteban (Montoto de O

jeda), the church of San Pelayo (Pisón de O

jeda) and the one of San Fructuoso (C

olmenares de O

jeda). In Dehesa de
