SECTOR NORTHWESTERN PENINSULAR Since 1993 the Ministry for Agriculture, Food and the Environment’s Nature Trails Program aims to restore for- mer transport infrastructures such as railway tracks, cattle trails and traditional routes, for public use and enjoyment. These routes take us to the countryside to discover the bio- diversity and beauty of our precious natural heritage, and discover the villages, sights, traditions and people that are part of the unique cultural landscape of our country. We invite you to visit them and offer you the keys to enjoy the trip. In this brochure you will find a brief description of the Románico Palentino Nature Trail and the map for the journey, along with recommendations to make the most of this experience. We only ask one thing of you: do not for- get to leave everything as you found it. The conservation of these pathways is also your responsibility. NATURE TRAIL ROMÁNICO PALENTINO The Románico Palentino Nature Trail uses an old path that linked the mining area of the Castillería, Vergaño and Orbó valleys with the Canal de Castilla, in Alar del Rey, through which coal used to arrive at Palencia and Valladolid. This 103-km long nature trail consists of a main route of 66 kilometres, the “Ruta del Carbón de Cok” (Coke Coal Route), and two alternative routes that depart from the main one and complement it. The goal of these routes is to promote the rich Romanesque heritage of Palencia, one of the pla- ces with the largest concentration of this art style in Europe. . TELEPHONES OF INTEREST: • Palencia tourism website: 0034 979 706 523 Provincial Council of Palencia: 0034 979 715 100 NIPO: DL: Alar del Rey - San Cebrián de Mudá [Palencia] THE PALENTINIAN MOUNTAIN, LA OJEDA REGION AND THE RICH ROMANESQUE HERITAGE OF THE PROVINCE OF PALENCIA COKE COAL ROUTE. STAGE 1: ALAR DEL REY - COZUELOS DE OJEDA 1. The first stage of the main route, which is around 17 ki- lometres, departs from Alar de Rey, just by the docks of the Canal de Castilla. There, coal was loaded in order to be distributed all along the meseta. After leaving this town behind and crossing the Pisuerga River, the rou- te goes through crop plains and cliffs between pine stands and pastures on hills, while passing by Prádanos de Ojeda, Santibáñez de Ecla (where the first example of the Romanesque that gives its name to this route, the church of San Juan, can be found) and Villaescusa de Ecla. This stage ends when arriving to Cozuelos de Ojeda. STAGE 2: COZUELOS DE OJEDA - VADO 2. The longest stage of the three that make up this route, with almost 28 km, goes through the north-eastern bor- ders of La Ojeda region, allowing the traveller to enjoy some amazing panoramic views when the path gains al- titude (La Ruya, Peña Umoma). It goes across the towns of Cozuelos de Ojeda, Vallespinoso de Aguilar (pas- sing by the beautiful Romanesque hermitage of Santa Cecilia), Dehesa de Montejo and Vado. From the fi- nal step of this stage, the nearby town of Cervera de Pisuerga can be visited. 3. 4 km away from Vallespinoso, a branch lets the trave- ller peek in the lands of Aguilar de Campoo and sight its reservoir, as well as visit Barrio de San Pedro and Barrio de Santa María (and the church of San Andrés in the former and the hermitage of Santa Eulalia and the church of La Asunción in the latter). STAGE 3: VADO – CONNECTION WITH GR-1 (SAN CEBRIÁN DE MUDÁ) 4. Lhe last stage of the Coke Coal Route (which is 21,2 km long) starts along with the Pisuerga River, passing by Ligüerzana or Barcenilla de Pisuerga, and then cros- ses the river and heads North, going past Rueda de Pisuerga, Vallespinoso de Cervera and San Cebrián de Mudá. Living up to the nature trail’s name, in these towns it will be possible to visit more Romanesque tre- asures, such as the churches of San Cristóbal (Rueda de Pisuerga), San Juan Bautista (Vallespinoso de Cervera) or San Cornelio and San Cipriano (San Cebrián de Mudá). The main route of this nature trail ends in the intersection with the historic trail GR-1, after passing by the Reserve and Interpretation Centre of the European Bison, right in the middle of the Natural Park of Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina. ROUTE FROM SANTIBAÑEZ DE ECLA TO PAYO DE OJEDA 5. This 14-kilometre route is one of the two alternative rou- tes that go together with the Coke Coal Route. It goes through the wavy territory of La Ojeda among landsca- pes shaped by the Burejo River, surrounded by crop fields and some small oak and pine woods. During the route, the Romanesque churches of San Juan (Santibañez de Ecla), San Juan Bautista (Moarves de Ojeda) or Santa Justa and Santa Rufina (in Payo de Ojeda) can be visi- ted. This region hides as well other beautiful examples of the Spanish and European Romanesque, such as the monasteries of San Andrés and Santa Eufemia. ROUTE FROM COZUELOS DE OJEDA TO DEHESA DE MONTEJO 6. 22.5 kilometres long, this is the second alternative rou- te that completes the Románico Palentino Nature Trail. It starts in Stage 2 of the Coke Coal Route, 1 km from Cozuelos de Ojeda, and goes through the North of La Ojeda region, among the plains of Tierra de Campos and the rocky wall formed by the first peaks of the Cantabrian Range. Throughout the trail, the traveller keeps discovering the Palentinian Romanesque when passing by the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the hermitage of San Pelayo (Perazancas de Ojeda), the church of San Esteban (Montoto de Ojeda), the church of San Pelayo (Pisón de Ojeda) and the one of San Fructuoso (Colmenares de Ojeda). In Dehesa de Montejo this route rejoins the main trail.
