FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the begin-

ning of Lent. Ashes will be distributed at 9 AM

Mass, 4 PM service, 7:30 PM service. During

the Lenten season, all Fridays are days to

abstain from meat. Ash Wednesday is also a

day to abstain from meat. All people from 14 to

59 are expected to not eat in between meals on

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

We need EM help at the Mass and the two

services to give out ashes. Please volunteer if

you are there to receive ashes.

Thank you for your continued generosity in the

Parking Lot Light collection. I appreciate it.

I have made the fire alarm system for the

church and parish center digital. There are no

longer any wires to deteriorate. It works off of a

cell tower.

Thought for the Week

“The right to life is the foundation and starting point for every other God-given human right. When that right is attacked or denied, all other rights and liberties begin to crumble…….“Pray the Holy Rosary. Ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, Protector of Mothers, Defender of life and Family, to strengthen us so that we may be compas-sionate, courageous witnesses to the truth. Ask also for the intercession of Saint Thomas Moore, patron of statesmen politicians, lawyers and judges, who lost his life for refusing to renounce his conscience and give in to the tides of political power and privilege.”

(Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of Rockville Centre) Never underestimate the power of prayer!! (Especially, the Rosary!)

The Eucharist

“And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

And Jesus is with us in the most extraordinary way in the Eucharist. He comes to us in the most personal way possible, giving us His body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity each time we receive Him at Communion time.

We are so blessed!

Words from Pope Francis

“Let us ask the Holy Spirit to sustain us during these days and to help us transform this evil into an opportunity for awareness and purification.”

Pontiflex, February 21.

Just a Thought…...

A Little Humor

FORMED

The most important event in the evangelization of the New World occurred in December, 1531. Over the course of four days, the Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, appeared to an indigenous convert named Juan Diego. As a result of this encoun-ter, and the image miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak), nine million Native Americans embraced the Catholic faith, and the Americas began its transformation into the Catholic hemisphere. Our Lady of Guadalupe's message of love had replaced the institutionalized violence of the Aztec culture and built a bridge between two worlds.

Bereavement Group

Our bereavement group will begin meeting in April. If you would like to participate, call the rectory and leave your name and phone number. You will be contacted by one of our facilitators, Ellen Masterson or Lorraine Baker.

In these troubling times,…. “May our thought and gaze be fixed on Jesus Christ, the beginning and the end of all actions of the church. He is the foundation and no one may lay a different one. He is the “rock” upon which we must build. Saint Augustine recalls this with expressive words, when he writes that even if shaken and upset over historical events, the Church ‘will not fall, because she is founded on the rock,….The rock is Christ…’”

Registration for our 2018-19 Catechetical Year continues. It is cer-tainly not too late and we are always happy to welcome you back or to welcome any newcomers. Please contact the Faith Formation Office to register your child. We are also always happy to take regis-trations following our Sunday’s 9:30 Mass. Upon registering, families will be provided with details concerning our new online registration fee payment. Children who are currently in First Grade should be registered now to begin the two year preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Children then continue with each level, growing in their faith and love of the Lord. The schedule for our Faith Formation classes is very family friendly, offering both afternoon and evening times for each level. We are always happy to hear from any families who would like to find out more about our parish offerings which enable the children, teens, parents and grandparents opportunities to increase their faith and grow closer to the Lord. We offer weekly formation for children and teens, a Liturgy of the Word for children at our 9:30 Sunday Mass year round, preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Recon-ciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation, a summer Vacation Bible Camp, a Youth Group and Youth Masses followed by get-togethers for seventh through twelfth graders, service opportunities for our young people, discussion and sharing for parents and grandparents and seasonal events for the entire parish. SAINT MARK’S YOUTH MINISTRY

FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN 7TH THROUGH 12TH GRADES

FAITH FORMATION DIRECTOR

MRS. LYNN FEIN 631 821-0550 OR

[email protected]

Our Youth group meets on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 in our parish center. Our next gatherings will be on February 25; March 4, 11, 18 and 25 and April 1, 8 and 15. We invite all young people from seventh through twelfth grades to join us and to bring a friend, as we share about our faith through discussions, activities and service projects. We are so truly grateful to everyone who continues to keep our youth leaders and the young people in their prayers. Registration is currently underway for our Diocesan Long Island Catholic Youth Conference being held on Saturday, March 30 at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington. This is open to young people in Grades 7-12 and promises to be an exciting day, as those participating gather from parishes throughout our diocese. Anyone wishing to be a part of this day needs to register through their parish youth group. Please contact the Faith Formation Office if you would like to attend, or for further information. The Catechists for our Youth Ministry are an extremely faith filled, exuberant and dedicated group of volunteers. Over the next several weeks I would like to introduce them to you. Throughout the years, Marie Rhinehart has served as a Catechist for both our classes and youth group and has been a devoted parishioner at St. Mark’s involved in numerous ministries. Marie has received several Diocesan Catechetical Service Awards because of her efforts. Marie is also an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and a member of ACTS. (small groups of adults meeting to share their faith) Marie easily engages the young people in conversation as they witness her genuine concern for them. At the same time the members of our Youth group are challenged by Marie to recognize the place of God in their lives through prayer, Eucharist and service.

Dress a Girl Around the World!

Our “Dress a Girl” group met again last Tuesday to cut out more patterns and make up kits that are available to all in the entrance of the church. These kits contain everything necessary to make a dress in medium size. (Last week the dresses were size small.) You may take 2 or 3 if you like. Completed dresses may be placed in the designated box in the kitchen of the Parish Center. There is no set deadline. As soon as we have a significant number, we will send them to Haiti. Keep an eye on the bulletin for our next cutting session. We are hoping to be able to make dresses in a large size for older girls.

Thank you for making this project a success!

Every Dress will be greatly appreciated!

Donations of fabric and sewing notions may also be brought to the kitchen. Thanks!!

Respect Life Spiritual Adoption

Our little baby developing in the womb is now in his or her third month. This little one measures about 2 inches and is starting to make its own movements. The doctor may hear the baby’s heartbeat by using special instruments. The sex organs of our little one are starting to become clear. Please keep praying for your precious “spiritually adopted” little boy or girl.

The Church in Need

On March 10, 2019 a collection will be taken for “The Church in Need.” The monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is a particular need for help:

Church in Central and Eastern Europe - the funds collected provide support for pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this

region.

The Church in Latin America - your support of the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ.

The Church in Africa – the fund supports pastoral projects that strengthen communi-

ties in their faith and foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension.

Thank you for your generosity.
