Gospel Reading: Matthew 28:16-20

This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next Sunday, however, are designated as solemnities, special days that call our attention to the central mysteries of our faith. Today, on the first Sunday after Pente-cost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consider what we believe about God, who has revealed himself to us in the Trinity, one God in three Persons. The Gospel for this Solemnity is taken from the Gos-pel of Matthew. In its conclusion, Matthew’s Gospel quickly moves from the disciples’ discovery of Jesus’ empty tomb and Jesus’ appearance to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to the commission that Jesus gives to his disciples in today’s Gospel.

The final commission, as this part of Matthew’s Gospel is sometimes called, is given on the mountaintop. Throughout Scripture, many of the most important events happen on a mountaintop, and Matthew used this motif often. Peter, James, and John saw Jesus transfigured on the mountaintop, and Jesus taught the crowds from the mountaintop in the Ser-mon on the Mount. In today’s Gospel, the eleven disciples go the mountaintop in Galilee, as Jesus had instructed them through Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. They see Jesus, and they worship and doubt at the same time. Jesus ap-proaches them and commissions them to baptize and teach. It is a task for which Jesus had previously prepared his disciples; recall that Jesus had already sent the twelve apostles to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal. Yet earlier, the Twelve were sent only to the House of Israel; in this final commission, the eleven are told to go to all nations. The mission of Jesus is now to be taken to all people, and the task is to baptize and to teach.

Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in the name of the Trinity; this is one of the clearest attestations for Baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity found in Scripture. Other New Tes-tament references to Baptism describe it as being celebrated in the name of Jesus. As we read this Gospel on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we are reminded that this central mys-tery of faith is meant to be lived. As baptized Christians, we share in the life of the blessed Trinity and seek to invite others to share in God’s love.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

There is no question that the events of this past year have challenged us in ways we could never have imagined. Nevertheless, Christ’s presence comforted, sustained, and motivated us to stay faithful to our call. As His disciples and members of the Archdio-cese of Newark, we remain steadfast in the mission He has commended to us – to proclaim the Gospel, pass on the faith to the next generation, and care for the poor and marginalized.

We are collectively fulfilling this mission in our parishes, and through programs and ministries that serve the faithful beyond the lim-its of our parishes. The Annual Appeal of the Archdiocese of Newark ensures the continuation of these vital ministries. I ask that you will prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2021 Annual Appeal. We are currently at 70% of our goal for 2021, and I know that through our shared commitment, we can achieve this goal and make a difference. Please be assured that all contributions to the Annual Appeal will directly support the programs and ministries of this Archdiocese. You may visit our website at www.rcan.org/areas-support to learn about how your gift helps to sustain our programs and ministries.

Once again, thank you for your faithful witness to the Gospel, your commitment to the future of our Church, and your stewardship. May the Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones abundantly.

Sincerely in Christ the Redeemer, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark

St Thomas The Apostle Social Concerns Ministry

Celebrating Asian-American & Pacific Islander (AAPIs) Cultures

Previously we brought your attention to the re-cent harassment and other forms of violence to AAPIs in our Country and suggested actions for you to prayerfully consider to be in solidarity with these communities in addressing this nation-al crisis. We referred you to two of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching to uphold with regard to this issue – “Life and Dignity of the Human Person” and “Solidarity”. In this Part 2 of bringing this issue to light, we would like to share some infor-mation on the contribution of these groups to our Church and Society with their rich cultures and devotion to Christian princi-ples. We have, in fact here at St Thomas, a sizable, active, Filipi-no Community who contribute greatly to the prayer life and needs of our Church. We are fortunate to have this community that adds to the diversity in our Church.

Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders are now six percent of the overall U.S. population and the third largest number of Catholics after Whites and Hispanics. As migration increases their number each year, AAPIs are among the fastest growing minority groups impacting American society and the Catholic Church as well. Today, there are over 4 million Filipinos in the U.S., of whom about 65 percent are Catholic. The 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines is being celebrated in 2021. Let’s reach out to our Filipino Community at this time to celebrate with them and let them know how welcome and valued they are.

To talk to us about our new Social Concerns Ministry, contact Michele Gilfillan at (646) 584-8187.

May is the month dedicated to Our Blessed Mother of Fatima

She asked that the Rosary be recited every day for peace in the world. Please hear her plea.

If you would like to receive our email newsletter to keep up on current news in our parish, please be sure to give your email address to Terry 973-338-9190 (x 138) at the parish center.
