BLUEBIRD 1935

Rolex was already producing the first so-

phisticated chronograph stopwatches for

professional drivers as early as the 1930s.Although automobile technology had not

yet reached its apex, in 1935 British dare-

devil Sir Malcolm Campbell was able to set

the world land speed record, a Rolex on his

wrist, and enter the history books as the

first human to exceed 300 miles (484 kilo-

metres) per hour in his famous Bluebird.

LE MANS 24 HOURS

Those who have raced Le Mans will tell you

this: the gruelling 5,000-kilometre race is

not merely a competition, but a test of will.See how well your reflexes respond as you

travel through the dark of night at speeds

of 351km/h. The challenge is so all-encom-

passing that its been known to entirely

drain participants both physically and em-

In racing, sustaining top speeds for ex-

tended periods of time is routine. But for

24 hours straight, on a track only 20% illu-minated throughout the night? This takes

ON-BOARD INSTRUMENTATION

The Cosmograph Daytona was devised to

function as the ultimate timing tool for dri-

vers in endurance races. While the centralsecond hand allows an accurate reading of

1/8 second, the two counters respectively

at 9 and 3 oclock measure time in hour

and minute increments, allowing the driver

to map his course times accurately and de-

termine just what he needs to accomplish

in order to achieve the victory.

TACHYMETRE

The Daytonas engraved bezel can be used

as a tachymetre to help read distance in

combination with an elapsed time. The

Cosmograph Daytona is therefore a perfect

instrument for measuring speed up to 400

units per hour whether they be kilometres,

miles or any other reference unit.

START. DRIVE. STOP

At Rolex, form and function work together. Rolex engineers

have applied the most advanced of technologies in crafting

the perfect spring to activate the chronograph mechanism

when finger pressure is exerted on the pushers. The result

is not only a reliable stopwatch function, but also a crisp,

clear click sound well known by those who wear this one-

of-a-kind timepiece, whether they be measuring laps or

indeed recording any elapsed period of time.

4130 CHRONOGRAPH MOVEMENT

Inside the elegantly designed exterior, the

Cosmograph Daytona is a masterpiece of

watch making art. The 4130 chronograph

calibre movement was conceived and as-

sembled exclusively by Rolex in 2000 for

the Cosmograph Daytona and incorporates

just 290 components far fewer than astandard chronograph making it a much

admired symphony of simplicity. It has

a 72-hour Power reserve (66 hours if the

stopwatch is in use) and, inside, the blue

Parachrom hairspring, made from a unique

alloy impervious to magnetic fields, gives it

up to 10 times more resistance to shocks

than conventional hairsprings.
