Was born into a well known business family. He graduated from Harvard College, and completed his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1981.

He returned to India and joined Mahindra Ugine Steel Company (MUSCO) the country’s foremost producer of specialty steels, as Executive Assistant to the Finance Director.

He was a co-promoter of Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd., which in 2003 was converted into a bank. 

Also Tech Mahindra, a IT part of the M&M group is one of the fastest growing in the industry.
