    Dear Co-worker s ,

    Come, l e t us sing fo r

There has been more de l ay

    t h i s l e t t e r and th e

    wrote

    back

    in November,

    I t has

    not been

    the f au l t of

    th e p osta l

    serv ice ,

    however. We j u s t haven t

    been

    able to get around to

    wr i t ing

    and keep up with

    a l l of

    the

    work. Sickness has

slowed us down aga in ,

    too .

    In November we wrote

    t ha t

    we

    were

going to t ry other ways to send

    our

    our

    Mrs. Oelkers sa id

    th e

    Christmas

    to

    you on December

    7th;

    so you must have

    gotten

    in wel l

    be fo re

    the

    B ig

    Day , as Chris tmas i s ca l l ed here .

    Christmas celebrations

    here

    were rather

    low key

    this time.

    Extra

    t ime

    and e f fo r t

    were being

    given to

    completing

    the new

    church

    bui ld ing .

    The

    three

    usual

    dramas were performed

    in

    the

    schools, not

    publicly. There were no

    carol l ing, picnic

    or

sports competit ion. The church building

    was

    mostly

    f i n i shed

    by

    December IBth,

    the

    day se t

f or d ed ic a ti on , so

    it was used

    fo r

Sunday services, and Chris tmas and New Year s Day services. The bapt ismal tank

    has

    been

    bui l t

    into the new platform, instead

    of

    outsid e as

    before.

    In

    January

    we witnessed the f i r s t

    three

    baptisms

    for

the year: two of our Training

    I n s t i t u t e

    s tuden t s ,

    and

    ano the r

    young

    man whom one

    of

    the church members has

    been

    t eaching.

    January 26

    is

    Indian Republic Day,

    so

    i s a vacat ion fo r th e C .T .I ,

    s tudents . There

    i s

    always a special meeting

    with

    a parade and

    s peeche s ove r

    in

    the Police

    Grounds. Students

    like to

    go

    over

    and

    watch that . This year

    we(Wiiliam

    Jean) made a

    long

    weekend

    of i t

    and took a

    short t r ip to

    the west

    of here.

    The f i r s t night we

    stayed

    a t the

    Safar i

    Lodge,

    in

    the Kanha

    Kisl i

    reserve

    forest .

    The

    next

    day

    we

    drove

    on

    west

    to

    Pachmarhi and

    spent

    the night

    there .

    Pachmarhi

    i s in a 3000 foot

    mountainous area , so

    is considered a summer

    hi l l resort . had

    never

    been

    there

    and wanted

    to

check i t out, th inking we

    might

    want

    to spend

    a summer

there instead of going to Mussoorie.

    On

    the

    return

    we stayed

    at

the Safari Lodge again, then came on home Sunday

    afternoon. There was some

    excitement

    around

    th e

    Lodge because a t iger

    had

    been

sighted nearby. We d idn t

    take

    time to

    try

    and see i t ,

    however.

    Our

    special

    thanks

    to

    those of you

    who have sent

    Birthday,

    Christmas

    and

    New Year

    greetings.

    do appreciate your

    love

    and concern. Hearing from

you gives us much encouragement. This

    year

    cards

    and

    l e t t e r s

    have

    come

    over

    a

    very

    extended

    period again.

    The f i r s t

Christmas greet ings came on December

    7th.

    The most recent

    Christmas le t ter

    arrived February

    5th. It

    is good to

    have

    them spread out

    that

    way, ra ther than coming a l l a t one time. I f

    i t

    is

    l i ke other

    years

    we will

    be

    receiving

    more.

Several have written to say that rumors are going around the

    States

    to

    the

    effect that we

    have

    l e f t th e B ible College

    work, have

    moved our work

    to the

    Hi l l s ,

    and

    t ha t we have

    re t i red .

    We do

    not

    know fo r

    sure

    how

    these fa l se

    rumors

    got

    started.

    But

    that

    is

    jus t what

    they

    are:

    false,

    and

    very

    disturbing.

    I t

    too.

    What

    the outcome

    wil l

    be

    only God

    knows.

    We ask you

    to join

us in much prayer about i t . We

    will

    At the time of writing,

    February

    15, Jean is very i l l . She

    hasn t

    been feeling the

    best

    for several

    weeks. Then on

    about February 5th she

    began

    having

    ch i l i s , fever , and

    body

    aches. We thought

    i t was

    probably

    malaria ,

    but

    the

    usual

    malaria medicine

    hasn t

    cured

    her .

    The doctor i s

    also t reat ing

    her

    fo r malar ia l fever . I t must

    be

    one of the new

    s t r a i n s

    we have read about .

    After a

    week

    and a ha l f o f tre atm en t she

    i s

still no t well . She has had an

    average temperature of

    more

    than 100 fo r nine days ,

    with

    a high of 102.6. I t

    has

    been accompanied

with vomiting, so she has been

    on a l iquid

    die t , and is

    get t ing very

    weak.

    We

    reques t

your prayers fo r her , and fo r William t ha t

    he

    can

    cope

    with the ex t ra care requ ired . Fortuna te ly the In s t i t u t e i s on a

    that has

    of the i r

    Indian

    colleagues. They

    were

    here

    from early

    on the

    9th

to around noon on th e 11th. Both

    Bill

    and

    Ethel

    were t i red from

    traveling,

    and

    Ethel was

    i l l

    with tummy

    t rouble and

    a

    cold. But

    in

    sp i te

    of

    i l lness

    on

the i r side and ours, we enjoyed the i r

    v i s i t .

    I t was a

    boost

    to

    our

    spi r i t s .

Bi l l spoke to the students during

    one

    chapel service, and for the

    Kududand

Church at the Sunday morning worship

    service.

    Ethel and

    Jesurathanam

    helped

with house work, so gave William some rest from that. They expect to stop in

    Dear

    Co-workers,

    Mussoorie;INDIA

    Apri l /May, 1990

    This

    time our

    greetings come

    from way up north againin

    the

    foothills

    of

    the

    Himalayan Mts.

    e

    have been

    here

    since

    April

    7th. Jean regained her

    strength

    enough

    for

    us to travel, so we

    lef t Bilaspur April

    3rd. William fixed

a bed in the back of

    the

    Van

    Jean spent most of the

    trip

    lying back there,

    relaxing

    and

    sleeping.

    Fact

is the t r ip seemed

    to

    be quite restful for her.

    She

    felt

    much

    better

    on

    arrival

    here than

    when we left

    Bilaspur.

    The weather

    was

    cool

    enough

    so

    we

    could drive during the days.

    e

    spent four

    nights

    on the way Three

    nights

    in

    hotels,

    and one

    night

    by

the side of the road in the

    Van

    e didn t have any

    s e r i ou s c a r t roub le j u s t tw o f l a t s .

    The first thing

    we

did after arrival was get an appointment for

    Jean

    at

    the Landour

    Community

    Hospital with the Australian

    doctor.

    From

    his review of the

    symptoms and

    a thorough

examination he felt Jean had suffered from either Typhoid Fever

or Dengue Fever. His examination revealed her liver

    was

    enlarged.

    He

also ordered extensive lab tests. From

    these the

doctor diagnosed her trouble as a severe case of Typhoid

    He

ordered strict rest fo r recuperation. So Jean has been taking

    i t

    easy. Except

    for

    a spell of

    dizziness

    and vomit ing

    for

    a few

    days from

    ay

    7th she has been

    feeling much

    better, and

    is

    regaining

    strength

    rapidly.

    The doctor has been

    periodically

    checking

    the

    condition of her liver. He

    said

if i t did not go

    down to

normal he would send her for an

    Ultrasonic

    Scan

    to

determine the trouble. But when he checked her on May 10th he

    said

th e l iver is returning to

    normal,

so the Scan will not be

    necessary.

    Now

    he

    wants

    to

    check

    her

    again

    about June 15th

    before

    we re turn

    t o B ila sp ur.

Again we thank you for your prayers and concern.

    e

a re gra te fu l

    for

    cards and

    letters from

many of you. They have been very

    encou r a g i ng .

William is k eep in g busy wi th c or re sp on de nc e and mi ss io n records.

The big project is getting the financial receipt records

    transferred from cards

    to

    computer

    disks.

    e were

    able

    to ge t a

    computer

    program

    for typing in

    the Hindi

    language. He wants to

    spend time

    learning

    how

    to use i t

    so

    he can

    do more work on the

    s t udy

    no tes .

    Before leaving

    Bilaspur

    William

    finished

    teaching

    his

    class in

    Acts and gave the

    final

    exam The

    other teachers

    were expecting

    to

    continue

    until

    toward

    the

    end of

    April. e haven t

    had any

    news from there,

    but

students must be back in thei r home

    areas

    now.

    e

    pray that they

    will

    be

    able

    to use

    the

    things

    they

    have

    learned as they work in

    local

    churches

    and

    programs.

    Cast

    your

    cares

    on

    the

    Lord and he

    will sustain

    you; he

    will

Gree t ings once again from these

    high

    par t s

    of

India . This wi l l probably be

    our

    l a s t

    greet ing

    from

    here

    t h i s year ,

b ec au se o ur

    s tay

    up here i s drawing

    to

    a

    close .

    As

    planned now

    we

    wil l leave

    on

    the 29th morning to s ta r t the t r i p

    back

    to Bi la spur .

    Jean

    i s

    regaining

    her

stren gth n ice ly , and

    i s

    able to get around

    more. The

    checkup

    with th e

    Doctor

    on th e 14th showed t h a t her l i v e r

    i s

    normal now. The

    dizziness

    has

    also

    stopped.

    We thank God

    for

    h er r ecov er y

    an d

    you

    for

    your

    p raye r s

    on her

    beha l f .

    We had

    hoped

    to be able to

    take a camping t r ip

    again th is year

    sim ilar to

    what

    we d id l a s t year . But we

    have not

    been

    able to

    do

    so. We have

    been ab le to

    ge t ou t

    to

worship se rv i ce s

    in

    tw o

    of th e loca l Churches .

    Union Church i s down

    in

    the

    town.

During th is summer tourist season t ra f f ic is very heavy but we

    have not ha d

    too much

    t rouble.

    Kellogg Church

    is

    up on top

    of the mountain

    behind

where EdgehiU i s loca ted. We were glad

    to

    be able

    to

    go there and

    hear

th ree of the messages the

    Woodstock

Pr incipal brought from the Fi r s t Letter

    of

    John. These Churches are

    interdenominational

    so do

    hot

    have communion every

    Sunday.

    We usua l ly

    have

    our own

    se rv i ce

    here in our room.

The Landour Community H os pi ta l h as allowed us to park the Van in

    their parking

    space. I t i s

    j u s t

    a

s ho rt d is ta nc e from

    Edgehl l l so Jean

    has

    been able

    to

walk over there and back. I t is the Hospital that purchased

    Aloha

    Cottage from

    Jean some years ago.

    I t ,

too is located near the Hospital

    so

    is a good place

    f o r two

    st

    f am i l i e s .

    A few

    days

    ago William

    finished

transferring th e Mission f inancial rec eipt

    records to the

    computer.

    Ent r ies on

    two

drawers fu l l of cards came

    on

    one

    d i sk l

    I t

    i s amazing

    what th e

computer wi l l handle. He has been able

    to do

    a

    lo t of

    correspondence

    and

    other

    records ,

    too

    As

    things look

    now we will probably

    not

    be teaching

in the Ins t i tu te

    th is

year . At the Mission Governing Body meeting

    l a s t

    January

    i t

    of

    th e

    Indian

    had

    we are beginning

    to look

toward re t i rement from our

    service with the

    Inst i tute.

    want

    to

    continue working on

    translation and

    printing of study

    materials.

    Along with

    these cons idera tions

    we are also taking

    note

    of

    our age

    and

    hea l th .

    We f ee l we

    can

    cont inue the s tudy-mater ia l work in the S t a t e s .

    So

    we are

making t en ta t ive

    plans to

    re turn

    to the

Sta tes an d take up res idence in

one of the Church Retirement Homes. A big question

    of course

    Is the

    refciiemenfe

    We trust

    that the

by your continued g i f t s . After winding up things in B il as pu r we

    want

    to

    do some f i n a l tour ing
