    Let

    us draw near to God

    Vol. 10,

    We

    ha ve

    visit

    of

    renewing our residential permits. We

    are

    happy

    be able to report that

    they have been

    renewed for

    .another

    year. Previously we had

    jus t

    one

    permit

    for

    both

    of

us. This time they required Jean to

    get

    a

    separate

    one,

    so

    now we

    each have

    a

    permit to

    go

    along

    with our separate

    passports .

    _ jus t

    returned

to B ila sp ur from another

    to

    Madras.

    This

t r ip was mainly for the

    purpos

    ewing our residential permits.

    We

    are happy to

    Jean

    went to Madras

    alone,

    because we

    thought sh

    could

    get

    the

permits and other work done leaving

    William

    in Bilaspur

    to

    keep on

    with the work. But

    William s

signature and the o ld pas spor t were

    required

    so

    after

receiving a wire from Madras he had to pack

quickly and make the t r ip , too.

    Besides

    the

    res ident

    permi t s

    we

    were

    ab le to do some

    ge t the

    1979

    accounts aud i t ed ,

    prof i t ab le ,

    even i f i t

    did

    take

    our work in Bilaspur. We

    returned on

    extra

    busy

    trying to get caught

    up on

    necessary shopping

    and

    So

the t r ip was very

    a

    l o t

    o f t ime ou t

    o f

    th e

    9 th and

    a re

    l o s t t ime .

    While in Madras we

    also

    did

    some

    checking

    on

    flights

    for

our fur lough. As things are working out

    here,

it .seems i t will be best to s ta r t furlough in a

    o r

    June.

The bond on the t ruck and

    t r a i l e r

    i s due fo r

cancel lat ion in ay and we would

    l ike

    to get

    that

    done

    before we leave i f

    possib le .

    As we

    consider

    the needs

    of

    the

    work here

    and other

problems we feel i t will be

    best for us

    to take just

    a

    three-month furlough.

    This

    would put most

    of

the f ur lough dur ing

the Ins t i tu te

    vaca t ion .

    We

    would

    be

    ab le to

c on tin ue o ur

    c las ses

    without too

    much

disruption. It is possible to get a

    three month return

    visa

    stamped n our passports be

    fore

    leaving

    India.

    This

    will greatly

    facilitate

    our

    return.

    We would

    not have the

    uncertainty and trouble

    of

securing return permits and new entry visas. Three

    months will make our

    time

    in

    the

    States

    very

    short , bu

    we

    will

    have to

    try

    and make every day count.

    Besides

    yvisitlng

    relatives in Europe and the

    States

    we

    will

    spend

most of the time vis i t ing you who are

    supporting

    us.

    We

    want to make a

    f i r s t

    hand report

    of

    what we ha

    been doing and le t

    you

    know what we have in

    mind

    fo r

    th e

    f u t u r e .

    We need your help

    to

    make

    our

tra ve l p la ns. The

    following

    Is a

    tentative schedule

for vis i t ing and

Sing to the Lord Vol. 10,

    No. 2

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Serve th e Lord with

    gladness;

    come before

    Him with Joyful singing.

    Ps .

    100:1, 2. This is a good

    Thanksgiving

    verse and though

the t radi t ional American Thanksgiving

    Day is

    s t i l l

    a

    couple

    of

    months away, i t is

    a

    time

    of

    special thanksgiving for

us We are safe ly back in Biiaspur after a three-month fur

    lough out

    of India.

    We

    have

    many

    happy memories to cheer

us on our way as we se t t le

    back

    to

    the

    work

    in

    an

    environment which

    is

    sometimes

    somewhat

    depressing

    end

    discouraging.

    We were able

    to

spend two or three days each with our three children and their

    families in

    Europe,

    and a l i t t le more with Dav id 's in I l l inois . We had

    the

    joy of visi t

ing many of our supporting churches and fr iends. And we were

    privileged

    to attend

    the

    North

    American

    Chr i s t i an

C on ven tio n in

    Sea t t l e .

    Our three-month visa expired on

    August

    13th, which

    meant

    that

    we had

    to

    be back in

India by then or we would be In TROUBLE Our

    last

speaking date was Sunday evening August

    10 in Virginia with a

    church

    which

    has

fa i thfully supported th i s work since we came In

    197^ though

    they

had never met us . So i t was

    expedient

for us to vis i t them, and that

was the las t possible date we could

    arrange

    with them. We

    had

    Monday to drive back to

    the

    Baltimore

    airpor t

    to

    get

    our

    f l ight

    to

    New

    York.

    We

    made

    that

    comfortably

    and

    boarded

    our plane

    a t

    New

    York. But

    then

    we sat in the

    plane

    for 1i

    hours while

    a

    f if th engine

    was

    fastened

on to be transported to a disabled plane In

    London.

    That

    l e f t

    us only 20 minutes

    in London to make our

    connecting

    f l igh t to

    India.

If we missed that there would be no

plane which could get us to

    India

    by our visa

    deadl ine .

The a ir hostess on the New

    York

    to

    London f l ight

    gave

us no encouragement that we might be able

    to

    run the mile

    from

    the

    one

    plane to the other and

take care of lega l i t ies in London.

    She

said th ey c ou ld

    not

    hold

    the

    London

    plane

    up for

    us.

    So we

    had

    some

    anxious thoughts, oh,

    we of

    l i t t l e fai th

    We should have

    known from

    so

    many past

    experiences

    tha t God

    was in

    contro l .

    At London

    we

    rushed to our boarding

    gate

    to

    f ind

    tha t

    the

    London

secur i ty personnel were l a te so the

    plane

    to

    India

was also del ayed about 1i hou rs , g iv ing us ample time for a ll the

    necessary

    red

    tape there . We

    should

    have remembered what Ezra said

    For

    I

    was ashamed

    to request

    from the king troops

    and horsemen to

protect us from the enemy on

    the

    way, because we had

    sa id

    to

    the king,

    'The

    hand

    of

    our

    God

is f avor ab ly d ispo sed

    to

    a l l

    those

    who

    seek

    Him,

    but

    His power and His

    anger

    are

    against

    a ll

    those

    who forsake

    Him.'

    Ezra 8:22

    Another

    pleasant surpr ise

    was tha t

    the

    weather in

    Madras, and also

    here

    in Biiaspur ,

    has-been

    comparative.ly

    mild. A fter the

    record-breaking heat we

    had experienced most

    of

    th e

    summer in

    the

    U.S.A. we were

    surprised that

a heavy monsoon had cooled things

    off

    considerably here. Temperature is staying

    in

    the

    BO s

    with

    humidity near 90^. The

    floods

    In some areas

    a re taking

    the i r to l l

    of l ives

    and

    property.

    Everything

    is

    musty,

    mouldy

    and mildewy,

    but we

    are

    thankful

    for

the cool. And we arrived in

    the nick of

    time

    to save some books

    (including

two of Jean's favorite Bibles) from the termites. They had

started in one bookcase bu t mostly only

    ate th e

    edges

    of

    the pages and

    no t

    much

    of the

    t ex t is damaged.

We had been told by the

    Import/Export

Officers in Madras that when we returned from

    furlough we

    would

    be able to have th e bond on the Dodge Truck and t r a i l e r redeemed. I t

    had been

taken out as ordered by them, for

    s ix

    years,

    so

    we were surprised when they

    had

    told us i t

would au tomatica lly cance lled at the end of five years. When

    we

    went this

    time

    to

    take

    care

    of i t they hes i tated

    saying the

    direct ive concerning

    i t

    was

    unclear and they

    would con tac t

    us when

    i t

    was

    c l a r i f i e d so I t i s st pending. Please pray

    with us tha t

    at least at

    the

end of th e six years

    It

will be released, and not have to be renewed for

    another six

    years,

    which is po ssible according

    to

th e original order. The price of

    gas

    oline

    (and

    many other

    things)

    has gone up

    again,

    so

    we use

    the

    truck

    very l i t t l e .

    Gas

    is about

    $2.65

    a

    gallon

    now

    in Madras we had

    our residential papers

    renewed until

    February

    A, 1981, and

    requested

    that

    our

    place of resldence.be

    t ransferred

    to

    Biiaspur .

    We

    were

    to.Ld

    to

    report to

    the

    Superintendent

    of Police here and

    ask

him to w rite to Madras requesting that the papers be

    transferred.

    Please

    pray with us that this

    transfer

    may be accomplished. The Superinten

    Charles

    married

    while

    we

    and

    Chad

    was

    born

    a f t e r

    they

    went

    to

    Athens,

    so

    we

    had

    not

    seen

    before.

Most of the time was spent during our two days there j u s t

    catch

    ing up on

    news, though

    we did go out

    for

    a

    Grecian

    meal and

    drive to the ruins of

    the

    Next

    we went

    t o

    Madrid where Paul

    met

    us and drove us home

    to

    Oviedo. Again i t was

    about m idnight when we a r r i v e d , but we had to t a l k

    awhile .

In the morning we saw how

Jonathan Paul had grown, and saw my Michelle (our

    only

    granddaughter) for the f i r s t time.

    It

    rained

    most

    of our time

    in

    Spain

    and

    th e c hi ld re n

    were disappointed

    not to be

    able

    to

    take us

    to

    the

    beach for

    a

    p icn ic o r

    swim. We were

    nearly as

    happy

    to stay

    home and

    v i s i t ,

    though

    we

    did

    drive

    around to see a l i t t l e of the area. e d iscu ssed t he p rogress

and plans of the work In t he area- -Spain and Portugal. No decision had been made

    yet

    as

    to what Paul and

    Helen

    would do

    since

    Crosleys

    were

    no

longer there to help . Since then

    they have moved to

    Lisbon,

    Portugal as

    t h e i r

    advising

    Elders

    in Indiana had recommended.

    They are to work

    with and

    learn from Lew and

    Vida

    Cass

    and

    get thei r help in

    surveying

    Spain for

    a more promising

    area

    to work. In a

    year

    they

    will

    have a

    short

    furlough and

    hopeto recruit helpers

    to a s s i s t in the work .

From Spain we went through France and then

    crossed the

    English Channel

    by

    Hovercraft

    in 35 minutes; then on

    to

    London

    to get our plane

    to New York; and on

    to Chicago

    on May 31

David and Glenda and boys met us and again

    I t

    was around midnight

    before

    we reached the i r

    home in Beason.

    How Boomer

    had grown and

    how

    good

    to see

    Ben

    face to

    face for

    the

    f i r s t

    time Besides

visiting with them there was some l egal busine ss to do in

    Lincoln

    and

    Springfield. The week

    there

    soon

    came

    to an end, but

    not before the

    Boonaerts family

    arrived

    and we

    could

    have a day

    together.

    They had been

    planning

    a

    short

    furlough

    when

we were in Belgium but the plans were not finalized until after

    we l e f t .

    With the children

    scattered in so

    many

    countries

    i t

was impossible to have a real

    family

    reunion with all

    together, but
