ROKEWOOD MEN’S SHED

Rokewood Men’s Shed meet weekly on Tuesday’s from

10am – 4pm.

It is a great opportunity to meet and chat over a “cuppa” and/or to work

on projects in the company of other men. Work can vary from the con-

struction of items such as small toys, garden pot hangers, coat hangers to

larger items such as small tables, raised garden beds, sandpit and commu-

nity notice board.

Assisting in the Community Health Veggie Garden is another aspect of

Men’s Shed work.

The shed is facilitated by Hesse Rural Health Service and is located at the

back of the Rokewood Community Health Centre in Rokewood. Hesse Rural

Health Service is a community based, non-profit organisation and have

made the shed available and accessible to all men in Rokewood and sur-

rounding communities.

The primary focus of the shed is the provision of a safe, friendly, inclusive

environment where men can meet, talk and work on projects at their own

pace and in the company of other men, as well as contributing to the wider

community.

For further information contact: Jen McLean (Health Promotion Of-

ficer) – 0437 085 496

A couple of jokes from Christmas Bon bons:

Q: What did the sea say to Santa?

A: Nothing! It just waved!

Q: Who is Santa’s favourite singer?

A: Elf is Presley

Q:` What’s worse than Rudolph with a runny nose?

A: Frosty the snowman with a hot flush!

Q: Why did Santa’s helper see the doctor?

A: Because he had low “elf” esteem!

ROKEWOOD - (The Old Hometown)

On the fringe of a wide and fertile plain,

At the foot of the hills that come sweeping down,

On steep winding banks of the Kuruc-a-ruc

There nestles a neat little back-country town.

Old Rokewood, the scene once of bustle and life

When thousands were seeking the rich gold and ore;

Now peaceful ‘midst relics of gravel, and clay,

As silent reminders of boom days of yore.

When livelihood gone, families drifted away

To other locations, for fortune, or fame.

While others remaining so steadfast and true

Stood by the old township, preserving its name.

A lofty church spire standing out ‘gainst the blue –

A landmark for many a mile o’er the plain,

Now seems to be beckoning to those who have gone

To come, and reside, in the old place again.

Amongst the tall pines on the brow of a hill

Some dearly loved kinfolk were laid down to rest

Their earthly term over, eternal peace found

Their names ever cherished, their deeds ever blest.

Fond memories of childhood, of home, and the folk,

Will always be with us while this life shall last

Could we but recall them, and live them again –

Those youthful, and carefree, joy days of the past.

NEW START by Frank Gartlan

Lucy Harding winced as she started her ailing washing machine. It coughed, spluttered and launched into a rhythm like an out of tune piano. Her washing day always started like this. It saddened her to listen to the agonising jangle of the machine, reminding her of how far her life had deteriorated in the five years since her husband Jim had died. Money was tight, and replacing household goods had a very low profile in her life. Now in her fifties, a time when she’d imagined she would have been settling into a fairly comfortable life, she was struggling.

The rented house she lived in was in need of a lot of maintenance and her landlord collected the rent but did little else.

As well as a part time cleaning job she had in an office building in town she baked freshly made biscuits for three local teashops. This made for her a busy life. In spite of her own problems she also did volunteer work at the Salvo’s group in town. This part of her life gave her a great deal of pleasure as her cooking skills made her a valuable asset to this group.

Her job was organising meals for homeless people. She had struck up a friendship with Charlie Reed, a widower who had recently joined the group as a general maintenance man. He was recovering from a heart at-tack that had left him wearing a pacemaker, and his confidence was growing each day.

With the laundry finished she was just putting the kettle on when she heard a knock at the door. Answering it, she found Charlie on the door-step. “Hi Lucy,” he said, a big smile on his face. “I just popped round to tell you that someone has left a fairly large bequest to our group and they’ve arranged a meeting this evening to discuss it. I hope you don’t mind me coming round.”

Lucy grinned. “Aw come off it Charlie, you know you’re welcome any time. Come in, I’ve just put the kettle on. Or perhaps you’d prefer a nice cold beer.”

“A beer would be fine Lucy.”

Page 15: Rokewood And District Newsletter · carry a phone number and address for verification purposes. The Committee reserves the right not to publish articles considered inappropriate

15

They settled themselves at the kitchen table, Charlie with his beer and Lucy with a pot of tea. “I’m not holding you up, am I?”

“No, you’re right Charlie. It’s my washing day today and when I’ve fin-ished I usually sit here for a while and think about things. Being on your own you do that a lot.”

“Yeah I know what you mean. When Kathy died six years ago I went through a bit of a rough time. I’m over the worst of it now. Matter of fact joining the Salvo’s was the start of me getting backing the saddle again.’

“I went through a period like that when my Jim died, moping around feeling sorry for myself. Then I gave myself a good talking to and re-joined the world.”

“What’s that noise?” said Charlie.

“Oh that’s my dog, he always scratches at the door when he wants to come in. He’s been romping around the garden while I hung the washing out. Have you got a dog? I love dogs.”

“What sort is he?”

“A Pomeranian, Bobby is his name. He’s a lovely little dog. I’ll let him in.”

She went to the door and Charlie followed her. When she opened it, there was Bobby with a huge dead rat which he dropped at Lucy’s feet.

“He’s brought me a present. Thank you,” she said.

Charlie, behind her, burst out laughing. “That would be tasty between two slices of bread.”

That little scene was the start of a beautiful friendship.
