HARMONY DAY Harmony Day is the official day of recognition and celebration of cultural diversity. I firmly believe that at Roebuck Primary School we do this each and every day. Our inclusivity is exactly that; harmonious and embedded in all that we do as a matter of course. This is evident through the rich class programs; the way in which our Roebuck Primary School community interact and the nature of play and interaction of all of our children.
When there is the official acknowledgement of Harmony Day we are pleased to share some of the things we do in and around the school.
Congratulations to the Health and Well-being Action Team who assisted our staff and your children in celebrating and acknowledging Harmony Day with a variety of lunchtime events.
FOODIE FRIDAY How great was last Friday’s Foodie Friday? A huge thanks to the P&C for organising this event. There were plenty of helpers on hand to ensure that all children got their lunches on time and more! A special mention to Kristie Moschion and Karen Dudley; the engine behind the scenes making sure that all was well planned and prepared for the day. This will not become a regular Friday event BUT there are other Foodie Fridays planned for this year with interesting menus. Stay tuned as I am sure you are keen to support…why wouldn’t you; it was delicious.
DIRECTOR-GENERAL The Director-General, Ms Sharyn O’Neill, is visiting Broome on Thursday and will meet with various school leaders. Ms O’Neill is the longest serving Director-General in the Department of Education. Her longevity speaks volumes of her capacity and innovation in leadership; having overseen many significant changes in education, including the development of our current status: Independent Public Schools.

*$650 is the expected total cost inclusive of all activities, accommodation, transport and food for a five day camp. Parent fundraising has historically reduced the contribution to approximately $300 per student. This amount per child per annum is therefore dependent and directly related to the effort and energy of the fundraising.
Prior to camp, payment plans may be negotiated with the Principal.
Payment will be requested during the school year when costs and participation by students is
confirmed
Voluntary Contributions and Charges were approved at School Board meeting held on 28 August 2017.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS FOR ACHIEVEMENT
Attendance is learned behaviour. Life is about “showing up” at school, for dinner, at sport, at work and in relationships.
Please notify the school of the reasons for your child being absent from school. Communication is vital for improving the engagement and participation of our

KEEP AUSTRALIA BEAUTIFUL DAY
The beginning of March saw much excitement and
happiness for the students and teachers of Broome.
Not only was it the Labour Day long weekend (which
meant no school) but it was also the weekend for
remembering to Keep Australia Beautiful.
With the growing number of litter and rubbish washed
up on our shores, the Broome Schools combined to
lend a hand. We walked along Cable Beach and
collected the rubbish and litter we found. In total, we
collected over 28kgs of rubbish in the form of plastics,
clothing, glass bottles and cans. This is astonishing!
Especially considering 100,000 turtles and marine
mammals, such as dolphins, whales and seals, are
killed by plastic marine litter every year around the
world.
But, it was made easier by everyone lending a hand
and doing their bit. Next time you’re at the beach or in
a public space remember… put it in the bin!
Thank you to all of the students, teachers and families
who participated in the day.
ENVIRONMENT ACTION TEAM
The Environment Action Team (EAT) have been so busy brainstorming ways that we can all make a positive
difference to our environment.
Luckily, the entire world also has some great ideas. One is Earth Hour. Earth Hour is an initiative that encourages
everyone to turn off their lights for one hour at 8:30pm on Saturday, 24 March. Electricity use puts a large strain on
our beautiful planet and by reducing our reliability on electricity means we are all doing a small thing to make a
BIG difference.
Please join us in switching off at 8:30 pm Saturday, 24 March.

SCHOOL NEWS CONT...
Hi! My name is Maddison. I have a great passion for Orangutans. I recently did a speech about this at assembly and wish to follow it up with more about my website and why I am doing this. My love for Orangutans started when I was in year 2, at my old school in Wagin. We went on an excursion to the zoo and as soon as I saw the Orangutans I fell in love with them! I started researching them and found out that they are disappearing very quickly. The main reason for this is deforestation and palm oil plantations. Rainforests are being destroyed to make way for the palm oil plantations which leaves Orangutans homeless, starving and sometimes killed or sold by workers. Palm oil is a vegetable oil that is cheap to use, which saves companies money. This means that it is now being found in most of the food we eat and in household products like shampoo and conditioner, washing powder and toothpaste. When I found out that Orangutans are critically endangered, I knew I had to do something to help. I started checking all the food that my mum bought to make sure it didn't have palm oil in it. I made sure to spread the word to all of my friends and family members. I adopted an Orangutan named Gokong through The Orangutan Project. When Gokong was a baby, he was snatched from his mother by a palm oil plantation worker and sold for $10.40. He was then found by volunteers and is now in rehabilitation. I donate $12 a month and this money goes towards forest school for Gokong, food, veterinary care and medicine. I started to feel like I could do more to help all of the Orangutans, so I came up with the idea of making and selling t-shirts. After mum and I found the perfect pictures for them, we had them printed and posted up to Broome. My Aunty Kat made me a website which I love. This was put up in September 2017 and since then I have raised over $1200. All the money raised goes to a foundation called Borneo Orangutan Survival. Their website is https://www.orangutans.com.au and they have lots of information on what is happening to Orangutans and how you can help. The t-shirts on my website cost $20 each and we have three different designs - Best friends, Cheeky Mr O and Mr Wise. If you would like to purchase one, you can find them at www.maddisproject.com. Some sizes are sold out already but don't worry, we have more on the way. Please support the Orangutans by buying a t-shirt and checking all of your food and products for palm oil. The easiest way is with an App called POI.
Some interesting facts about Orangutans -
Orangutans are currently only found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra
The arm span for large adult male Orangutans can be up to 8 feet.
Orangutans have 32 teeth, the same number as humans.
About 97% of an Orangutans genetic makeup is the same as a humans.
Orangutans are the largest tree
dwelling animals on earth.
In Malay, Orang means 'person' and
utan is derived from hutan, which
means 'forest'.

KIDS TEES ADULTS TEES
I wish to introduce Maddison, a Student Councillor in Year 5 Spoonbill One. When talking about student leadership at a recent assembly, I referred to Maddison and her commitment to raise awareness and funds for Orangutans. I asked Maddison to do an impromptu speech; of which she did very well. As there was so much information we felt that Maddison should follow it up with a special article highlighting her quest. I commend Maddison’s article,
leadership and commitment as an example of the qualities we have in our young leadership of today for tomorrow.
