The blades of the windmills in the shape of a cross stand out impressively in this de-sign. Contrasting texture and color peek out through the gusset.

Designing the appliquéd sides of this carry-all with densely packed houses gives a sense of perspective.

OliveThe round fruit and the long leaves of the olive tree are simple shapes that are ideal for appliqué designs. Although somewhat of a complex bag to construct, the subtle colors are soothing and used to perfection in this two-tone handbag. ----- instructions p. 86

42

BarleyLong, slender stalks of barley, ripe with ears of grain and complementary motifs make up the design of this handbag. The entwined stalks are arranged and appli-qued in ordered layers.----- instructions p. 76

44

Cow ParsnipThe flowers of the cow parsnip spread out like little umbrellas. In order to highlight the beauty of the background fabric, I placed the design to the side and focused on the flowers themselves.----- instructions p. 45

51

Horse ChestnutThe large leaves and the chestnuts wrapped in their prickly hulls make the horse chestnut a favorite design of mine when working on a plan-inspired theme. This roomy tote is an ideal size and you will want to carry it with you often.----- instructions p. 82

October - AkebiaComing across this plant on a walk always brings a

smile to my face. The fruit is vaguely sweet, and the

vine is often used in basket-making for it's depths of color, which, for

one who loves baskets, appeals to me. Appliqué the complex design by

intertwining the vines.
