AP16 ‐ PCS Phosphate Automates Reporting to Liberate Process Engineers and Improve Accuracy

Production engineers in the phosphate division of PotashCorp were inundated with decades’ worth of data sheets manually generated from paper logs and foreign system printouts. The company turned toFactoryTalk VantagePoint to aggregate various quality and production systems with a role‐specific online log sheet application. Eliminating paper and manual data entry in Excel reports, the system has reduced time spent production calculations by 95 percent, replacing it with data entry verification. With the base system built to collect historical data and improve production, inventory and quality numbers, production engineers have been liberated to ask better questions about improvement of the now‐known results.

United Pet Group (UPG) needed more actionable information to help plant operators and management improve business performance. UPG implemented FactoryTalk Metrics to provide real‐time visibility into labor hours, process data, changeover time and downtime by line. The solution helped operators see microstops that were cutting into productivity and drill down into and address root causes of the stops. Labor efficiency increased by 15 percent and production capacity by 3 percent. The new information also helped operators recalibrate the preventative maintenance program to ease troubleshooting and reduce downtime. The increase in efficiency has cut employee overtime by 10 percent.

AP25 ‐ Dalian Metro System Rides Increased Visibility on Energy Usage into Savings

The Dalian metro rail system in northern China covers 106 km (66 mi) and carries over 100 million passengers annually. In order to understand and improve the elevated rapid transit system’s energy consumption, Dalian Metro deployed the FactoryTalk software suite to collect and share real‐time and historical data. The system monitors and collects three months’ worth of data on the rail HVAC system, tunnel drainage, lighting, escalators, safety and electrical equipment for a total of 10,000 data points. Centralized data storage and management has made it easier to develop and share reports on energy usage and, ultimately, decrease energy use and costs for the city.
