Warm-Up: Monday1. Why is there so much movement beneath the surface of the Earth?a. Earth’s crust is made of plates that shift and collide with each otherb. Earth is constantly revolving around the sunc. Earth is rotating on its axis at all times.d. Ocean currents cause Earth’s crust to float and shift.

2. What is the surface of the Earth made up of? ___________

plates

We are Learning: I can explain that rocks are made up of one or more minerals. I can compare & contrast the different types of rocks in the rock cycle. I can identify the properties of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks as well explain how each type is formed. I can connect that the rock cycle causes physical and chemical properties of rocks to change. I can trace manufactured goods back to geologic resources.

Reviewing the Study Guide: As we go over the answers to the study guide, please check over your answers and correct them if they are incorrect. All study guide answers will be posted on the internet after school today for you to also access at home.

Type of Rock How it is formed?

Sedimentary Rock

Igneous Rock

Metamorphic Rock

Formed when existing rock is weathered into sediments, eroded away and eventually deposited. Overtime, layers of sediment form and are compacted and cemented together to form rock.

Formed from the melting, cooling and solidification of lava & magma.

Formed from pre-existing rocks that go through extreme heat & pressure

#2: What are the three types of sedimentary rocks? Explain how each are formed and provide an example of each. Clastic Organic Chemical

Formed from rock particles or sediments that are pressed and cemented together. Example: conglomerate

Formed from precipitation. When dissolved minerals in water settle out, the minerals are left behind once the water evaporates. Example: Chalk

Formed from once-living organisms that collect together over time which then eventually solidifies into rock. Example: Coal

#3. What is erosion? What happens to rocks as they erode?

Erosion is the movement of sediment through wind, ice, gravity, and water. As rocks erode they eventually deposit where the sediment was initially weathered or at the delta’s of rivers.

#4: Identify & describe the characteristics of the two ways in which metamorphic rocks form? Type of Metamorphic Rock Characteristics

Foliated

NonFoliated

Contains straight or “Ribbon-Like” Bands

Contains No Bands, Have arough/grainy texture

#5. What is magma? How is it different from lava?

Magma is the molten rock beneath the surface of the Earth. Magma becomes lava once it enters the surface of the Earth.

#6: What are the two types of igneous rocks? Explain how each are formed. Describe their characteristics. Type of Igneous Rock How it is formed Characteristics

ExtrusiveForms from the fast cooling of lava at the surface of Earth

-Fine-grained-Smooth texture-Air bubbles-Glassy

IntrusiveForms from slow cooling of magma inside the Earth

-Large crystals-Rough in texture

#7. What path must a rock take once it is in the rock cycle? There is no specific path that a rock takes as it travels through the rock cycle. Any rock can transform into the other types of rocks.#8. How long does it take for a rock to change into a rock?

Millions of Years

#9. What is the rock cycle? How do rocks travel through the rock cycle?

A continuous process that rocks undergo as they change from one type of rock to another.

#11. Name 2 specific rocks. What is the type of rock? Explain how they are used in everyday life. Sedimentary: Sandstone & conglomerate; used for construction materials.

Igneous: Pumice (lightweight concrete); obsidian (surgical tools)

Metamorphic: Marble (cemetery markers & building materials); Gneiss (floor tiles)
