The performing arts program and event calendar at the beautiful Bond Chapel is also under Rockefeller Chapel management by kind arrangement with the Divinity School.

Kallembach PassionSATURDAY APRIL 30 | 7:30 PM | ROCKEFELLER

To mark the launch of Rockefeller Chapel’s new CD Kallembach Passion, the Chapel Choir, the Decani, and the Avalon Quartet perform James Kallembach’s groundbreaking Passion, commissioned by the Chapel and premiered in 2014. Featuring soprano Kaitlin Foley as the evangelist, the work intersperses texts on evil from Faust, Lady Macbeth, and Dante, and poetry of William Blake, with the Biblical story. The concert includes Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Salve Regina, and music of J.S. Bach and Sven-David Sandström. $20 at rockefeller.uchicago.edu or at the door, free to students. Reception afterward.

VOICES Quince Ensemble: Embodied FictionsSATURDAY APRIL 2 | 7 PM | BOND

Female vocal quartet Quince Ensemble presents the premières of five new works for four voices by UChicago graduate student composers Marcelle Pierson, Kate Pukinskis, Pierce Gradone, Jack Hughes, and Joungbum Lee. Free.

Contempo: Tomorrow’s Music Today IFRIDAY MAY 13 | 7:30 PM | ROCKEFELLER

Cliff Colnot conducts eighth blackbird, with the Decani—the professional vocal ensemble of Rockefeller Chapel—in a special edition of the Contempo series which features the premières of works written by doctoral students graduating in music composition. The works on this program were written with the glorious acoustic of Rockefeller Chapel in mind and include the Stabat Mater of long-time Chapel chorister Kate Pukinskis, and music by Jack Hughes, Joungbum Lee, and Pierce Gradone. Free.

Juan de Lienas: Vespers from Convento de la EncarnaciónSATURDAY APRIL 9 | 8 PM ROCKEFELLER

Newberry Consort artistic co-director and soprano Ellen Hargis recreates the sunset evening service rich with psalms, antiphons, and responsories, as it might have been sung in Mexico City sometime in the early 17th century. She directs an all-female ensemble of thirteen vocalists and instrumentalists. $35 at newberryconsort.org.

The Rose EnsembleTHURSDAY APRIL 21 | 7:30 PM ROCKEFELLER

Twice crowned at the “best choir in the world” festival in Spain, the Rose Ensemble presents a program of music from Spain, Land of Three Faiths: Voices of Ancient Mediterranean Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Sacred, secular, folk, and classical, and featuring instruments and musical ideas that blur the lines between Arabic and European, this program is steeped in the rich history of the three faiths, achieving a balance of edgy improvisation, exotic vocal styles, and ancient traditions. $25 at roseensemble.org or at the door, free to students.

James Kallembach leads Motet Choir, the University Chorus, and the Women’s Ensemble in a program featuring music of the French chanson tradition, including Poulenc, Ravel, and Barber, and also music of John Corigliano. Free.

The Bridge is a traveling exhibition showcasing the work of forty-seven premier Arab, Persian, and Jewish contemporary visual artists from fifteen countries, of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish backgrounds. It focuses upon what bridges us to one another, as well as to what is held in common across creeds and cultures. Free.

Since its opening in February 2015 in Paris, The Bridge has been displayed in London, Cairo, Metz (France), and New York. After its time in Chicago, it goes to Portland, Spokane, and Wyoming.

Tea & Pipes, the weekly organ recital, will feature music related to The Bridge on Tuesday April 12 at 4:30 pm, immediately prior to the opening reception.

Bells for Dr. KingWEDNESDAY APRIL 13 | 12 NOON ROCKEFELLER

On the 60th anniversary of the historic first visit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to speak at Rockefeller Chapel on April 13, 1956, University carillonneur Joey Brink plays African American spirituals and music of the civil rights era on the bells.

The Sunday service on April 17 also honors the anniversary of Dr. King’s first speech in Chicago.

World-renowned carillon master Geert d’Hollander teams up with Joey Brink to play Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, arranged by d’Hollander for carillon duet. Dean Elizabeth Davenport narrates the story. Bring your picnic, your children, or your own enchanted self. Free.

As we have done every Sunday since 1928, we present a Sunday liturgy designed for this cathedral-like space: the lovely voices of the Chapel Choir, the magnificent sounds of the organ, words drawn from ancient tradition and contemporary sources alike, thoughtful preaching rooted in rigorous inquiry.
