Rockaway Republicans Hold Presidential Candidates ForumLocal Man Declares For Congress

Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, andMarco Rubio couldn’t make it tothe Belle Harbor Yacht Club onMonday night but representativesof each came to make the case for

their particular candidate. Thefourth candidate in the Republicanrace, still running as of Monday,John Kasich was not represented. The Rockaway Republican Clubhosted the Candidate Forum whichdrew enough interested people tofill the room on a rainy night.

The format allowed for each rep toaddress the crowd stating the posi-tions of each candidate and why theybelieve their man is the best choiceto be the Republican nominee. Thereps vigorously echoed what hasbeen said by the candidates them-selves on the campaign trail and onnumerous television debates. Aftereach taking a turn, audience mem-bers got to ask questions.Te Cruz rep, Garvin Wax,

spokerst and enumerated manyof the Cruz positions and said hiscandidate had the best tax plan“bar none.” Te Cruz plan calls for

a at tax of 10 percent across theboard. He said his candidate hasalso been the most consistentlypro-life candidate in the race.

    Brian Morgenstern attended

on behalf of Rubio and said hisman is the only one who can beatDemocrat Hilary Clinton and isa “unier.” He said Trump facesalmost 60 percent opposition inthe Republican party and cannot

win the general election. He said“if Florida goes well for SenatorRubio” there will likely be a con-tested convention. (Post meet-ing note: Rubio nished in 2ndin Florida on Tuesday night anddropped out of the race).

Representing the Trump cam-paign was John Haggerty. He saidhis man brings business experi-ence that the other candidateslack. He also defended the Re-publican party and said it’s of-ten maligned unfairly. He notedthat the party’s presidential can-didates included a woman, an

African-American, and two His-panic-Americans asserting that

the Republican party is far morediverse than is often described.

Former Congressman BobTurner, now Chairman of theQueens Republicans, was in at-tendance and said the Repub-licans plan to run candidates inmany state races and fundraising

will be a crucial component of allraces. Te club’s coff ers are some-

what bare now as only $3500 is inthe bank for the upcoming races.Te evening concluded with the

news that Mike O’Reilly, an attor-ney, former airline pilot, US Ma-rine, and Broad Channel resident

will be running for the Congres-sional seat now held by democrat

Gregory Meeks. Meeks is expect-ed to face a primary challenge byState Senator James Sanders. Itremains to be seen if O’Reilly willhave to compete in a primary as

well. In November, 2015 he ranfor a judgeship. Although he didnot get elected he did garner more

votes than other republicans who were vying for one of three judge-ships, all of which went to demo-crats in the general election.

Alan Zwirn, president of theRockaway Republicans, waspleased with the event. “TeRockaway Republican Club host-ed this Candidates Forum to helppeople make a better decision inthe voting booth in New York’s

April 19 Primary Election. Feed-back from many joining in themeeting was that it was highlyinformative and interesting, so ithit the mark.Te candidates’ rep-resentatives enjoyed the questionsection, explaining their candi-date’s positions in detail, and re-alizing how they shared the con-cerns of so many in Rockaway.”

Unless you live under a rockor a four leaf clover you knowit’s Irish Season in Rockaway. But it’s over tomorrow, March18th. Fat Tuesday is the lastday of revelry for Mardi Grasor Carnival. It’s the last dayeveryone can go a little nutsand not be noticed. March17th is like Fat Tuesday. It re-ally marks the end of Irish Car-nival in Rockaway. If you’restill celebrating St. Patrick’sDay after the 17th, well, it’stime to tone it down. Enoughalready.

If you celebrate after St. Pat-rick’s you’re just a blue sticker.Remember them? If your house

was structurally sound afterSandy the Buildings Depart-ment put a blue sticker on yourdoor or window. Some hous-es still have their blue stickers.

Enough already. We get it. Yourhouse is okay. It’s three and ahalf years. Jesus, Mary and Jo-seph took down their stickers,it’s time you did, too.

    But I’m writing this before

last call so there’s still time forme to Go Green and remind usall of some magically deliciousquotable quotes from the silverscreen and places unknown. InBraveheart a man is asked if heconverses with the Almighty.

Well, the man says, “In orderto nd his equal, an Irishmanis forced to talk to God.”

Of course, God makes his way into many an Irish in-sight, some of which you haveto read twice to make sure youget the gist, like this: God isgood to the Irish, but no oneelse is; not even the Irish.

That’s the thing about a lotof Irishisms: some of them arelike riddles and others seemlike they might have madesense three centuries ago. Ithink my grandmother usedto say, “Saints preserve us.”

Which I guess is kinda like“God help us,” but the wholepreserving thing makes methink of Walt Disney or Ted

Williams’s head. I supposebefore cryogenics, the saints

did the preserving.Samuel Johnson said, “The

Irish are a very fair people, they never speak well of oneanother.”

Which is the real reason theIrish have such a hard time be-ing politically correct. If youspeak ill of your family and

your best friends then what’sthe matter with doing the sameof people you don’t know?

The Irish and the politicallycorrect are often like choco-late chips and orange juice, they just don’t mix. And some-times they shouldn’t mix. ThePC police outdid themselveslast year at a Pennsylvaniacollege. Students demand-ed that Lynch Memorial Hallhave its name changed be-cause of the racial and violentovertones of the word “lynch.”

I’m hoping my Lynch cous-ins in Skibbereen don’t get

wind of that one. The build-ing, in fact, was named after aschool president, Clyde Lynch,

     who’d helped steer the school

through the tough times of theGreat Depression.

God knows what my Irishfriends would call the students

who tried that genius move. It’d be absent diplomacy, tobe sure. Oh, and what is Irishdiplomacy? It’s the ability totell a man to go to hell, so thathe will look forward to makingthe trip.

A fun bunch. But complicat-ed. You know what Matt Da-mon, playing Colin Sullivanin The Departed, said: “WhatFreud said about the Irish is,

we’re the only people who areimpervious to psychoanaly-sis.”

As Irish Carnival windsdown I leave you with a toast:

As you slide down the banisterof life, may the splinters neverpoint the wrong way.

DoingTe Bugalou2 Grayriders Make Move To Produce Shows

Te Grayriders, one of Rocka- way’s more popular bands, havebeen a mainstay of the localmusic scene for over a decade. Now, Grayrider members Keith‘Bugsy’ Goldberg and Lou Past-ina are about to improvise asthey launch their newest musical

venture. Te two have formed acompany, Bugalou Productions,

to present concerts right here inRockaway.Te plan is to feature a nation-

ally recognized touring act as theheadline performer, paired withone of Rockaway’s many talentedlocal groups or solo artists. To testthis plan the duo plan to launchtheirrst concert this spring.Tefocus will be on ‘Classic Rock and

Soul’ artists, but the pair also ex-pect their mix of shows to includeFolk/Americana/Indie Rock, as

well as Irish Music, and possiblyCountry acts as well.

Pastina and Goldberg expect topresent artists that normally playat venues such as City Wineryand BB King’s. Most national actsnaturally gravitate to Manhattan, but there is a group of venuesthat has sprung up in the tri-statearea.Tese venues have demon-strated the viability of presentinglive music outside of Manhattan, but none are close to Rockawayresidents.

One of the major concerns forconcertgoers from Rockaway istraveling back home afterwards. If you drive, well there is park-ing, the time to get there, andlets face it a ride home at nightthat can be stressful. Te alter-native in this ferryless world isan evening with a long or poten-tially expensive ride home bytrain or cab. Removing these ob-stacles is a big part of Bugalou’s

plan, and they believe that formany people in Rockaway, thisis the primary reason for notenjoying more music events inperson.

Aviator Sports brie y present-ed a concert series a few yearsago, and the most successful onepaired the Grayriders openingfor Eddie Money.Tat event was

very well attended and gave theduo the idea. Tey are currentlycontemplating several interest-ing venue locations in Rockaway.

Bugalou is excited to potential-ly off er this opportunity to manyof Rockaway’s talented bandsand their fans, and expect thisdynamic will be the main factorin their success and the enjoy-ment of fans.

Bugalou plans to launch their venture with an initial concertthis May. A detailed announce-ment about the event is expected

within the next two weeks. If you would like to get on Bugalou’smailing list, please [email protected]

Bugsy (lef) and Lou (right) will be producing music shows in Rockaway.Pictured here with Grayriders: John McNamee, Joe Kenel and former bandmember Laszlo Kovacs.

-------------------------------Did you know that New York

City ranked #5 in the Top 10 Worst Traffi  c Cities (per a 2013study by INRIX, a traffi c informa-tion and services group)? How

would you like to drive to your

destination and encounter theminimal amount of traffi c?

As you know, trying to drivein and around the tristate area,

or anywhere else these days isa challenge. Waze could be theanswer to that problem. Notonly does it save you time, it ul-timately saves you money on gas.(According to Te Partnershipof NYC, New Yorkers spend $2Bin wasted fuel and other vehiclecosts annually).

Waze (pronounced “ways”), isa free GPS-based geographicalnavigation application (or “app”)for smartphones and tablets. Youneed to have an active data con-nection. It has display screens

which provides turn-by-turninformation and route details.

When you use Waze, you canalso actively report informationto the other users (a.k.a. “Waz-ers”) about things like traffi c con-ditions, accidents, police traps, blocked roads, weather condi-tions, potholes and much more.

Waze collects this informationand immediately analyzes it inorder to provide other Wazers

with the most optimal route totheir destination, 24 hours a day.

In a nutshell, Waze has thesebig computers that take in all ofthe real time traffi  c informationfrom other people using the ser-

you don’t like the primary routethat Waze suggests, you can click

on the “Routes” icon and chooseone of the alternate routes. Eachroute will provide you the esti-mated time of arrival as well ashow many miles your trip willbe. Economics 101WOULDN’T IT BE NICE TO SPEND, SPEND, SPEND

    By Tom Boggiano

How would it feel to be ableto overdraft your check-

ing account as much as you want for as long as you want?Think of all the things youcould buy or places you couldsee or people you could help. However, we all know that if

we spend more than we havein our account or more than

we earn, we must borrowthe difference. Our borrow-ing is typically limited to anamount set by our lender,

whether it is a credit card, mortgage, car loan, etc. Butthere is one entity that seemsto have the ability to bor-row and spend as much as it

wants and never have to paydown the balance. That is theU.S. Government.

Unlike each of the states inthe U.S., the federal govern-ment is not required to limitits spending each year to the

amount it collects. The fed-eral government has the abilityto run what is referred to as abudget decit when the pres-

ident and Congress see theneed to outspend annual col-lections. In order to fund thatdecit the government issuesdebt known as U.S. Treasurysecurities. Te concept is thesame as a family spendingmore than its income each

year and using their credit cardto make up the diff erence. But

we know that at some point thefamily has to pay the piper.

Although we would expect thatrunning a budget decit shouldbe an exception and occur occa-sionally or even rarely, the U.S.Government has run a decitevery year, except for four, since1990. And since 2009, the sumof the annual decits total about$7.5 trillion meaning that in thelast seven years the federal gov-ernment spent $7.5 trillion morethan it took in. Also, from 1990 to

today, the government debt hasgrown from $3.2 trillion to $19trillion. Finally, the new budgetissued by the federal government

indicates that spending will ex-ceed collections by $2 trillionover the next ve years.Tis continual overspending

or lack ofscal responsibility wasone of the reasons for the birth ofthe Tea Party back in 2009.

How does the USGovernment have the

ability to borrow endlessamounts of money?

In the waning days of World War II at a conference of worldleaders, in Bretton WoodsNew Hampshire, the U.S. dol-lar was designated as the re-serve (or safe haven) currencyof the world. The objective ofthe designation was to pro-mote international trade andfund postwar reconstruction. This was a very importantdesignation and continues tobe to this day. The designa-tion requires all internationaltransactions to be conductedin U.S. dollars requiring for-eign governments and foreign

corporations to hold U.S. dol-lars in their accounts. Withthese dollars, these govern-ments and companies typical-ly purchase U.S. governmentdebt or Treasury securities. Asan example, China current-ly holds about $1.2 trillion ofU.S. Treasury securities. Thereserve currency status hascreated worldwide demandfor U.S. Treasury securitiesand is a contributor to allow-

ing the U.S. to seemingly issueas much debt as it needs to.

    Do we ever hit the

    limit?Many economists have tried

to assess how much is toomuch debt and the impact oflarge amounts of debt on thehealth of the U.S. economy. There are many opinions andcurrently no concrete con-clusions but what is clear isthat if interest rates increase, the cost of interest on $19 tril-lion of debt will rise quickly(if interest rates increase 2percent the interest cost willincrease $380 billion per yearor close to 10 percent of thegovernment’s 2016 spend-ing of $4.0 trillion). Therehave also been discussionsand actions taken by othercountries such as Russia andChina to end the U.S. dollar’sreign as the reserve currency, likely reducing the demandfor U.S. Treasury securities inthe future. If a major sourceof demand is eliminated, theinterest cost of these securi-ties will likely increase fur-

ther. So, although there is no dis-

cussion of this on the cam-paign trail or by any of thesenior members of Congressor the president, I think weall know that at some pointtoo much debt matters.

    HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!

As a youngster I was blessed tohave marched up 5th Avenue onMarch 17th alongside my grand-father with the Ancient Order ofHibernians in several St. Patrick’sDay Parades and in later years ac-companied my father with the Po-lice Department’s Emerald Societyin numerous others. Additionally, during my 30 years with the NYCDepartment of Correction I amproud of the fact that I marched

up 5th Avenue with the CorrectionDepartment’s Emerald Society inover twenty St. Patrick’s Day pa-rades! Since my retirement I havemanaged to march in five addition-al parades but, as my knees havesince turned to rust, my marching

days are over. Sad as that may be,it’s probably for the best as the lastparade I attended I may have im-bibed a wee bit too much forcingme to take a bus home. I knowthat may not sound like a big dealto you, but I had never driven a busbefore. My beloved Grace (aka: she

who must be obeyed) was nonetoo thrilled with that adventureand immediately restricted all fu-ture St. Patrick’s Day travel on mypart to “limping distance” withinthe confines of Broad Channel.

The new bulkhead at the end of West 12th Road is fast nearing com-pletion and on Monday, March 7th,construction activity started on thestreet itself to accommodate the in-stallation of new sanitary and storm

waste lines as well as a new watermain feed for all homes. The streetreconfiguration, infrastructure andraising work is expected to continue

for a minimum of nine months dur-ing which time all parking will beprohibited on West 12th Road. Thebad news is the next nine months

will be “noisy, dirty and long.” Thegood news is that, like the old Irishblessing, at long last the road truly is

rising up to meet us!I was at the All American Chan-

nel Market recently waiting for mybreakfast order to be filled at thedeli counter in the back of the store

when I was approached by a freck-le-faced, green-eyed Colleen in herearly teens who asked me if I was the“...guy who writes the about bridgesin Broad Channel for the RockawayTimes”? “Guilty as charged” I re-sponded and then asked her whatshe thought about the column. Shethought for a second or two andthen said “The column’s okay, mosttimes it makes me laugh but to behonest, I didn’t think you would bephysically able to get out and aboutso soon after your Valentine’s Daycolumn where you told everyone it

wasn’t worthwhile to spend moneyon a card, flowers and candy for the

wife!” I chuckled, thanked her forher candid response and assured

her that after an intensive interven-tion with the women of my house-hold, the greeting card, floral andconfectionery businesses will all seea substantial increase in sales in thefuture.

I then inquired as to how she

liked the Rockaway Times news-paper in general. As she grabbedher order from the deli counterand started to walk away she re-marked “I think it’s great! I es-pecially like the Fun Facts sec-tion and was really surprised toread this week that LeonardoDicaprio invented the scissors.I mean I know he’s a great actorbut he’s smart too! Nice meeting

you.” Her reply left me scratchingmy head all the way home until Igrabbed the recent (March 10th)edition of the RT and located the“Fun Facts You Probably Don’tNeed” insert on page 15 whereI found the following fun fact -“Leonardo DaVinci invented thescissors.” God bless the Irish, if yalove ‘em raise your hands...if youdon’t raise your standards!

Te Lazer SpeaksSANDS POINT BUNGALOW THERAPY

    By Lou Pastina

Tere are family and friends who say I have needed therapy

for years, and maybe their aimis not untrue, but recent eventshave forced me to reconsid-er my reticence about thera-py. Te aforementioned weremostly commenting aboutpsychological therapy; again, their concerns were not mis-placed, but I have been forcedinto physical therapy due to thebum knee, and have found itnot only to be helpful physical-ly but noticed a knock-on psy-chological impact! How so, youask? I am glad you asked thatquestion.

After surgery I signed on atSands Point Physical Terapy. Ihad done PT there prior to thetherapy and was very happy

with the staff   and facility andthe workouts. I picked themnot just because they advertisein this paper and the publish-

er said I could only patronizeadvertisers (although…), butbecause Sands Point is on thesite of a row of former summer

bungalows I once frequentedalmost forty years ago.Tose in the know would

remember this group of bun-galows because, day or night, there was always a party goingon. And they were unbelieva-ble parties, the kind the locallaw enforcement offi cials wouldcome back to after they got off  duty. Tere was always musicand some sort of “bash” goingon, singing and dancing, andthat was before breakfast. It wastoo crazy for me to live there, but I wanted to be close to thescene and so I lived around thecorner in other bungalows.Tis was the late seventies,

and it was still okay to havefun.Te people who lived therecalled themselves Bungaloo-nies, and I thought that was thebest name ever. Tere was a

mixture of neighborhoods rep-resented, some from Rockaway, some from Greenpoint, and fewother neighborhoods in Brook-

lyn and Queens. Some of thetoga parties were the best. Myfriends from Greenpoint are stillfriends today, and it’s fun to seepictures from those days. ButI have to tell you, I don’t thinkI ever learned anyone’s realnames from those bungalows, everyone had a nickname.

Why is any of this relevant you ask? Well the Sands Pointpeople are special people. Teyhave to deal with folks who have

just had surgery, or are sched-uled for surgery, or for whomsurgery isn’t an option and are

just trying to get some mobilityback. In other words, they deal

with cranky people. But thething is this – there aren’t anycranky people in Sands Point, not the therapists, workers orpatients. Tere is always musicon too; they like Pandora. And

generally speaking, the musicis really good. And the SandsPoint people are always smilingand have such a great rapport

with the patients that when youleave, you feel like you spent anhour with some friends crack-ing jokes, even though they aremaking you stretch in ways youcouldn’t before being injured!

I think I nally stumbled onthe reason for all this goodwilland it’s not because the medi-cation cabinet is left unlocked.Te head PT guy told me thatthey have been in that locationsince the place was built, andthat when it was built, the for-mer bungalows were razed andSands Point was built on top ofthem! So that’s it, it’s the ghostsof “Bungaloonies past” risingup through the building andinfecting everyone with thatfeel-goodness from yesteryear!Brilliant! I am walking betternow; the only problem is theodd urge to dress in a toga!

ing on the area above the map. Itprovides turn information (left orright), distance until the next turnas well as the name of the streetor highway that you will be turn-ing on to. Another great feature isthat Waze will update your route

in real time based on current traf-c congestion reports it receives. It will then change your originalroute so you can avoid a situationthat would delay your journey.Te settings icon allows you

to customize your Waze experi-ence. If you have a Bluetooth en-abled car, you can play the voiceinstructions through your soundsystem. A popular setting is thechoice of voices. “Jane” is the de-fault voice setting, who provides

you with the most detailed di-rections. You can have some fun

with Waze and choose celebrity voices like Morgan Freeman andColonel Sanders.

CNET and PC Magazine, pub-lications that track all the latestconsumer technologies, bothgive Waze a rating of 4 stars outof 5. CNET likes the reliable traf-c accuracy, but not the user in-terface (how the app looks andfeels). PC Magazine likes the ac-curate, easy-to-read maps butdoesn’t like the fact Waze doesn’ttell you what lane to be in.

Tere are similar free apps likeGoogle maps (which may havealready been loaded onto yoursmart device when you pur-chased it) and MapQuest. But

Waze has more reviews and israted higher.Te downside of using Waze is

that it consumes battery power as well as eats away at your mobiledata plan. According to the AppMonitor website review, Wazeused more than twice of a dataplan on an Android device anddrained the battery life slightlymore than Google maps app. Inorder to counteract the power is-sue, make sure that your phoneor tablet is plugged into the pow-er outlet in your car. Another tipis to turn off   the Waze app once

you know the rest of your trip willnot encounter traffi c.

My suggestion is to downloadthe app and try it since it is free.Use it around the neighborhoodto get used to its look and feel. If

you don’t like the app, then youcan simply delete it.

    Once you start using Waze,

don’t doubt its decisions. On atrip into upper Manhattan last

year, I decided to ignore the Waze directions (which I thought would take me out of the way)and I ended up in a major traffi c

jam. Lesson learned. However, Waze is not always

perfect. One time, it did provide

me with bad directions. But con-sidering all of the time and mon-ey and aggravation it has savedme, it is well worth it. Plus it isfree and there are no “pop-up”ads to distract you.Te Waze app is available for

iPhone and iPad, Android and windows phones. Please go tothe appropriate site or store on

your device and enter the appname in the search eld. Tereare also help videos on YouTubethat you can access.

Once you download the app,the registration process is simple.• Open the Waze app icon on

Funding for RockBeach Rail Line Study

ProposedIn what will come as wel-

come news to many Rock-away residents and transitactivists, Assemblyman PhilGoldfeder has secured fund-ing for a feasibility study ofthe Rockaway Beach Rail Linein this year’s State Assemblybudget proposal. For years ithas been argued that the re-activation of the half-centurydormant railway could im-prove commuting times forresidents and encourage morecity dwellers to visit the Rock-aways and during the summermonths, as well as an easy wayto get to JFK Airport.

“With so many families inQueens suffering throughsome of the longest com-mutes in the city, it’s impor-tant that we explore everyoption to improve transpor-tation. A feasibility study of

    reactivation the Rockaway

Beach Rail Line will do justthat. This study will provideus with an accurate picture ofthe state of the line and shownot just what it would cost toreactivate, but also the impactthis would have on thousandsof commuters in the commu-nity,” Goldfeder said.

A Goldf eder press releasesaid that “With the study,Goldfeder expects the MTAto assess the current condi-tion of infrastructure alongthe 4-mile right-of-way, as

well as the full cost of reac-tivating the line for passen-ger service. Goldfeder alsohopes that the study will

weigh in on the benefits ofreactivation, including po-tential ridership and theeconomic benefits to sur-rounding communities.”

Local Student Gets Response from President ObamaBy Dylan Watton

A knock on the door came as7-year-old Tyler Williams wasabout to head off  to bed. It wasgetting late on Tuesday, March7th, and the third-grader had

school the next day at St. Rose. At 9:00 p.m. a neighbor cameover carrying a manila enve-lope that had mistakenly been

sent to him and was addressedfor the Williams household; thereturn address, 1600 Pennsyl-

vania Avenue, came as a shockto everyone.

In January, Tyler wrote a let-ter to President Barack Obama.

“I wrote to the president to askhim to help poor people, givethem food, give them homes, and stop wars,” he said over thephone as his brother Christiancompeted for his dad Edwin’sattention in the background.“I also told him I work reallyhard and I want to become anophthalmologist.” Edwin saidthat his son’s surprisingly spe-cic life goal came as a result ofa traumatic incident a few yearsago. “When Tyler was three hegot sand in his eye. For sevenstraight days he had to go to theeye doctor and he wouldn’t letanyone else touch it to make surehis cornea wasn’t scratched.”

As many kids do Tyler haslooked up to President Obama,as his presence has been ubiq-uitous for the entirety of Tyler’slife. “He’s working hard to make

America a really great place tobe in,” Tyler said. “Sometimes Ilook on the TV when he’s mak-ing speeches and I’m proud ofhim.”

Once it became apparent thatthe letter being returned was in

fact real the thought of goingto school the next day was puton the backburner. “He wasso shocked that he couldn’tsleep!” Edwin said. Te familyopened the envelope to nd atyped response from the pres-

ident with his signature at thebottom, along with an auto-graphed picture of Obama anda separate photograph fea-turing the president with theFirst Lady Michelle and histwo daughters Malia and Sasha

(which was also signed by thepresident as well as Michelle).Te envelope also containedpictures of the Obama fami-ly’s canine companions, Bo (a

Parks Department personel on an empty beach looking for the owners ofunleashed dogs.

    CURB THESE OFFICERS

    Dear Editor:

OnTursday, March 10th I wasissued a summons by the NYCParks Department Enforcementfor having an unleashed dog onthe beach. While I realize I was“breaking the law” I feel thisharassment is unfair.

I had been on the beach forless than a minute when I sawthe offi cers writing a ticket to myneighbor. Note: the beach wasEMPTY except for my neighborand the two offi cers. I could havetaken my dog and run off   thebeach, but I chose to cooperate.I was told I was “observed” withmy dog off  the leash, and I politely

asked them for a warning. I hadnot been on the beach with thedog in over a month, and I wentdown to look at the water. Inhindsight, I should have kepther on the leash until I got overthe dune, but she wanted to sniff  around the wall and I proceededto the top of the dune.

I know there are “bad” dogowners who don’t clean up aftertheir dogs, but 99 percent ofdog owners clean up after theirpets. We also clean up any otherdog waste we nd, as well as thegarbage we see. We bring our dogsto the beach for exercise and tosocialize. A socialized dog that istired out is a better dog. I have metmore neighbors the past 12 yearsbecause of our dogs. It makes usbetter neighbors, too.

I personally have cleaned upbeer cans/bottles and other

    debris left behind by others.T

efencing around the dunes hasbeen destroyed by teenagersmaking res over the winter, andthey have left behind dangerous

wires and broken glass. I don’tunderstand why the dog ownersare the “bad guys” but I can makea guess as to why we’re beingsingled out.

Te Parks Department isobviously proling a certainsegment of dog owners and I thinkit’s unfair. I also believe that a $100ne is an unreasonable amount.

I am not going toght this ticketbut I am going to use it to makea point. Te Parks Department’s

management of Rockaway Beachhas been lackluster for years.Teydon’t put out enough garbagecans, they don’t clean out thecans in a timely manner (allowingthe seagulls to spread garbage allover the beach), and there areno recycling cans. Teir orangegarbage trucks speed along the

beach, as do their beach ATVs.Since they observed me violatinga law and didn’t give me a

warning, I’m going make a lot ofobservations on my own.

If the Parks Department needsto raise money, then I fullyexpect them to enforce ALL laws,

including those committed bypeople down for the day. I expecttickets written for people smokingon the beach, litter bugs, potsmokers, etc., and I expect theserules to be enforced in ALL areas ofRockaway, not just the perceived“rich” areas. More than anything,

I expect the Parks Department tomanage Rockaway Beach in a waythat it deserves to be managed.Trucks should not be speeding, even if the beach is empty. Trucksshould not bypass garbage in thesand. More garbage cans in everyarea of the beaches, not just onesingle line across, spaced out 1 or2 per beach, should be common.

I have already contactedMitchell Silver with mycomplaint. But I would alsoappreciate it if you coulddiscuss this with our local ParksDepartment representative. I

think we also need to investigatecreating legal dog hours early inthe morning on the beach. Tisharassment and proling needsto be stopped.Tank you for your attention to

my email. As always, I appreciateall you do for the peninsula.

    Kelly Kelley

DOG OWNER FOLLOW UPTis is a follow up to yesterday’s

email. I walked the beach thismorning from Beach 131st toBeach 136th streets.Te amountof bottles, cans and garbagein the sand between Beach132nd & Beach 133rd and againon Beach 135th is appalling.

I reported the litter and fencedestruction to 311 and was toldParks would respond withinthree days, but I expect this tobe taken care of ASAP since theglass, burnt wood and wirespose a dangerous condition. Inthe past, I would have done mybest to clean this up, but sinceParks has made us (i.e. dogowners) out to be the bad guys, they have lost my cooperation.Consider this one of my new“observations.” I expect theselitterers and property destroyersto be dealt with in the same way

you have chosen to go after thedog walkers.Tis nonsense takesplace every weekend and is moredangerous and destructive thanan unleashed dog on an emptybeach.

    Kelly Kelley

NO SIGN, NO SYMPATHYDear Editor:Tis was one offi cer named

Nadeen (in photo) and theother was Sainte. I had mydog on the leash when theyapproached me. I explainedI was giving the dog exercisebefore I left for the day toattend my father’s wake. I

asked if they would give me abreak. Tey were completelyunsympathetic. Nadeenproceeded to say that the sign

was posted at the back of the

beach but when I asked her tocome show me the sign there

was none. She said they wereposted on other beaches and Isaid I don’t live on other blocksI live here. Tey threatenedto call the 100 Precinct on meand have animal control cometake my dog away.

work needed to convert theline to subway use, two newsteel bridges were erected, crossing the North and SouthChannels. Two artificial is-lands were built to offer a

suitable roadbed for the sub- way trestle.

    5) And the Mott Avenue sta-tion was last, but hardly least.

All the city’s construction ledto the opening of all stationsby late June 1956, except forthe end of the line in FarRockaway--the Mott Avenuestation. That station wasn’topen for commuter trafficuntil January 1958.

    6) Can you name the long-est distance between anytwo stations heading intothe Rockaways? If you saidthe crossing spanning Ja-maica Bay between HowardBeach/JFK Airport and BroadChanel, give yourself a goldstar.

    7) Another interesting tid-bit concerning the HowardBeach station: Riders once

were charged a dou ble faresouth of Howard Beach, meaning they had to drop twotokens into the turnstiles, orone token on exit for thosearriving from other parts ofthe system. Fortunately, thatdouble-dipping was sweptaway in 1975.

    8) And before we leaveHoward Beach, did you knowthat the first official A trainthat left Howard Beach forthe Rockaways on June 28,1956 (at 5:30 p.m. for thoseinterested) sported a “Rock-away, Here We Come” ban-ner that stretched across thefirst car? That slogan may nothave been as stirring as “Go

west, young man ,” but it surebeat “Rockaway or bust.”
