Perf: THE CLUES Jude Paul (vocal, guitar, & percussion) Daniel Mey (guitar & bass) Paul Thomas (drums) Prod. Co: (?) Time: 3:21 CD: MAYBE IT’S TIME The Clues (?) (Tk 2) Notes: The 2-minute sample provided a Beatles-style popular rock song where the chorus was –

Back to the caves again But it was very difficult to hear the lyrics. Two comments on the Indie Music People site – “Off beat heavily BEATLES influenced pop” (PoProX 2016) and “Short intro, grabs ya, right away, then right into the meat of the song, so good eYe say, it is something that is catchy with such top drawer production. great hooks, good energy…. including that fine guitar work. chunky percussion, driving bass and excellent vocals” (eYe 2016) Ref: eYe 2016 The Clues, Back to the Caves, Song Comments, Indie Music People, iacmusic

Co: East Side Digital Records Time: 3:29 Compilation CD: PLACE OF GENERAL HAPPINESS – VOL. 2 East Side Digital ESD 80522 (Tk 13) Notes: A tired rhythm joins a female voice that plods through the poem as if quite bored. The verses were unintelligible here and it was not possible to view the text of this poem either, so it is not sure that this piece is about the mammal. This poem was also used in the 2001 film, “The Vampire Hunters Club.” Ref: Bats, Poems by Ernest Noyes Brookings, duplexplanet

THE BATS OF DARKWELL LANE RK – Indie – Vocal & Instrumental – Bat Pic Cover Comp: Liam FINN (LY-RK)

Perf: BETCHADUPA Liam Finn (vocal & guitar) Chris Garland (guitar) Joe Bramley (bass) Matt Eccles (drums) Prod: Liam Finn Prod. Co: Liberation Music; Auckland, New Zealand Time: 3:25 1. Reissue on Compilation CD: LIVE ‘N’ LOCAL ‘04 (2004) HMV 7373CCCD (Tk 9) Notes: Betchadupa was a New Zealand pop/rock group formed in 1997, in Auckland. A frenetic upbeat piece with two stanzas and chorus all about bats. The first two verses of the first stanza place these bats very clearly – In Darkwell Lane

There’s bats in the sky tonight

And the picture cover of the original CD-EP shows three bats flying over the heads of the group and on the right a street sign, “Darkwell Lane.” It is not likely that the big city street we see here is Darkwell Lane somewhere in Auckland. The word “Lane” on the sign is split thusly, “L_ane,” by the street lamp post indicating that this sign is just a fabricated element in this composite photo where the group and the stylized bats have been laid over the cityscape. The chorus – Fly all the night Sleep when it’s light The second stanza is curious –

They seem insane To circle for hours and hours What’s in their brains But dreams of the sea, relief Can we get some sleep

It’s hard to see bats dreaming about the sea. There’s nothing for them at sea. Bats feed on insects or fruits on land. Even fishing bats don’t fish in the salt sea. For full lyrics see under Rock Song Lyrics – A to D. The British release of this EP did not include this number. Ref: Betchadupa, Bio, Wikipedia

A struggling flame, a mouthful of ache Pollyanna stuck in a cape A ballast entwined, tucked out off-site Pollyanna zipped up tight CHORUS: Blow, blowing, blowing Blow, blowing, blowing cave Who do you want to blow away? Blow, blowing cave.

An upbeat rock jive of four stanzas that tell of a guy you meet in a bar. The second stanza describes him –

What kind of man does it take to fake Everything he wants you to say?

The chorus says more – He's a cool guy with a big mouth Set to make a rival shine He defies you, and invites you To the taste of cavemankind

CAVE POINT PARK RK – Indie Pop – Avant-garde – Vocal & Instrumental Comp: Mark TRECKA

Perf: STATIC FILMS Mark Treka (vocal & guitar) Douglas Tesnow (organ) Evan Hydzik (drums) Prod. Co: Bluesanct Musak; Bloomington, ID Time: 2:56 1. CD: FORCE OVER DISTANCE Bluesanct Musak 62 (Tk 3)

2. CD: FORCE OVER DISTANCE (2004)

Bluesanct INRI0 62 (Tk 3) Notes: No doubt inspired by Cave Point County Park on Lake Michigan just northeast of Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin. A few limestone littoral sea caves and this natural bridge are located there. One critic wrote – “‘Cave Point Park’ meanders through its muddy production…“ The 30-second sample makes this clear, with an organ backing, as an unintelligible voice drags

and blares the lyrics as if bored or simply tired out. The lyrics, if they could be heard, might prove to be interesting. Without being able to hear the entire piece it is very difficult to classify. One source labels the album Indie-pop and another calls it avant-garde & experimental. Mark Treka is shown above left. The group’s name could be referring to Campbell’s soup and the many varieties of soup they always advertise. They have a factory in Minneapolis. The singer enunciates so poorly and the mix is so bad that the lyrics are muddy and only partially decipherable. Notes: The ST 37, an experimental/space rock/psychedelic band from Austin, TX, formed in 1987. The ST 37 poster with the flying bat shown here has nothing to do with this CD album. One critic comments that this band gets “a little into punk metal with ‘Caves of Ice.’“ (Kranitz 2003) Another pointed out that they have a “tongue-in-cheek obsession with Norse mythology & H.P. Lovecraft” science fiction and that “Caves of Ice” is a “particularly Hawkwind-like boogie.” (Mason 2018) The samples had a threatening, intense rhythm pattern with the words “caves of ice” repeated three times and repeated by a screaming female voice. Comp: David RUBIN (LY-RK)

Perf: David RUBIN (vocal) Prod. Co: Satellite Records; Canada Time: 5:24 CD: ONE DAY

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has taken photos of the surface of Mars, which may show the entrances to lava tube caves near the Martian volcano Arsia Mons. Perf: SIDONIE Marc Ros (guitar & keyboards) Jesus Senra (bass) Axel Pi (drums) Prod. Co: Columbia Time: 4:05 CD: FASCINADO Columbia 82876872182 (Tk 2) Notes: Barcelona psychedelic-pop band with a passion for hindu, funky and electronic music. A nice bouncy rock piece with 10 short stanzas in Spanish. The title announces two bats, but there are only three stanzas about bats. The first stanza – Ciego y loco desciendo hacia ti Blind and crazy I descend towards you Volando en espiral de noche me perdí Flying in a spiral at night I got lost Al percibir tus alas negras When perceiving your black wings

And the sixth and seventh stanzas – Vamos a chocar We are going to crash Sin nuestro radar Without our radar Vamos a chocar We are going to crash

En muros de amor On walls of love Dos murciélagos Two bats Chocan sin dolor They collide without pain

The other stanzas talk about various unrelated things, such as, infinite eclipse, butterfly on the pin, praying that we kiss, tightrope walker, dream at birth, my delirium, and flowers of my polar garden.

Notes: A short piece had a steady thumping beat, clicking sticks, and a soft whinny melody. There was no apparent connection with bat echolocation here, but given the name of the band that’s probably what’s intended. Fruit Bats are an American indie rock band founded in 1997 in Chicago, Illinois. The group’s name was inspired by Rousette fruit bats (see under Cave-Inspired Group Names). Brazilian CD: DEVIL’S WORKSHOP (2002) Cooking Vinyl 2584-2 (Tk 3) Notes: Driving guitars and shimmering keyboards back a rather quirky, surrealistic rock song, which talks of altered states and of eating, drinking, and chasing ghosts in a mansion. “They went to have a ball/ Everyone gathered at the gates” And then the chorus –

Hey, but it's too late for to go back now They closed the gates and the scene was set Enter into his kingly cave Don't worry the leopards won't bite you Wipe that big tear away.

The scene shifts in stanza 3 and there are “bullet holes in Vernon’s room out back/ Don't worry the posse won't shoot you.” Then in stanza 4 – He's tripping over graves

As rain begins to fall And finally they escape When the shuttle bus is called

A rather dull, morose song of four stanzas and chorus where the second stanzas is repeated and all ends with the first stanza. It is never clear what the kingly cave really is, but presumably leopards live there. The Allmusic critic had this to say about Black’s song – “many of the songs here are among the best he's written in his later solo career, whether it's the vaguely spooky, Teenager-esque pop of "His Kingly Cave,"….” (Phares 2017) Ref: Frank Black, His Kingly Cave, Lyrics & Tablature, frankblack

LOST IN A CAVE RK – Indie – Pop Rock – Vocal & Instrumental – Cave Pic Cover Comp: Clifton CASTELLOE & Steve REED

Perf: CLIFTON Clifton Castelloe (vocal & guitar) Steve Reed (guitar) Bill Florez (steel guitar) Bruce Winter (bass) Ramy Antoun (drums) Prod: Bruce Winter Prod. Co: Orchard Records Time: 4:15 CD-EP: CLIFTON EP (PC-RE) Orchard 803395 (Tk 2)

Notes: “In 1999, Castelloe began rehearsing with Mark Twain, an indie rock trio that was making waves on the Central Coast” of California. (Anon., n.d.) Perhaps this was where he got the idea for this song. The 30-second sample was a whinny, slow love ballad, where the word “cave” was not heard. As for the band personnel, the Allmusic lineup was given here. The CDBaby lineup is quite different, it has Clifton Castelloe (vocal & guitar), but all the other members are changed: Jesse Valentine (keyboards), Glenn Gibson (bass), Thomas Stanfel (drums), and Sean Nowak (percussion). Sub Pop SPCD 605 (Tk 10) Notes: An alternative indie rock band from Gainesville, Florida. A very tired voice manages to mumble and stumble through the lyrics, which don’t really relate much to caves, except for a few words like “flowstone and the icicle fence,” or “polished gypsum.” For full lyrics see under Rock Song Lyrics – E to Z. The connection with Mammoth Cave, Kentucky is quite dubious. The vague sense of the text seems to be talking about a canary and taking its dead body into the cave. Ref: Holopaw, Biography, Wikipedia

Co: Sugar Fix Recordings Rec. Co: The Furnace Time: 1:49 CD: STATUTORY GRAPE Sugar Fix SFR 006 (Tk 2) Notes: A 30-second sample had a chugging along beat but the meaning of the title was never discerned. The words “go north” were heard so presumably the title refers to digging a snow cave to camp in. The Allmusic critic, Jason Ankeny, originally wrote in his biography – “The voices are girly and angelic. The lyrics childlike.” Then later he simply calls the group a “childlike lo-fi pop sextet formed in 1994.” The group’s name, Sissy Bar, may derive from the metal-tubing roll bar or back rest that fastens above the rear fender of a motorcycle. About a third of the way in he decides to groan out the lyrics, which consist of two stanzas and chorus. The chorus –

Teenage caveman, rock, wood, skin and bone It's the cry of the wild, we cry alone We cry alone (6X)

Stanza 2 – Got a strand of barbed wire twisted around my throat Teenage caveman, blind and without any hope Let's get primitive right now, down with the rocks and the dirt Let's bang our heads, girl, trade spit 'til it hurts

2. CD: IN THE FISHTANK 11 Konkurrent FISH 11 CD (Tk 6)

Notes: The Black Heart Procession (formed in San Diego in 1997) got together with the Dutch band, Solbakken, and recorded a bunch of songs including this very ambiguous extra slow-paced, languorous song – Get all shot on the evening sky All I ever thought comes down to you in brown Please put my stuff somewhere near the door Everything you said you read it there before.

CHORUS: SOLBAKKEN

And God knows how long We could run around In your cave. The first and only stanza, which is repeated, seems to be a parting note to a lover. But the line of the chorus, “run around in your cave,” is quite vague. The word “cave” undoubtedly refers to an apartment or living space used in the metaphorical sense, much in the same way as The Young Fresh Fellows did with their, “Get Outta My Cave“ (see under Garage Rock).
