CloverpatchCloverpatch November/December 2016

What’s Inside

Take Time to Welcome New Families into 4-H!

A new 4-H year is beginning, and that means new families are joining our 4-H clubs! Here are some things your club can do to help those new families feel welcome and comfortable in their new 4-H environment!

Hold an orientation for new members and families prior to or

following a club meeting:

Extend a personal invitation to the orientation by calling all new families.

Include your entire club leadership team (officers and advisory board) in presenting the orientation. Give club officers the opportunity to teach!

Review club and county policies and expectations. The Rock County 4-H Policy can be found at http://fyi.uwex.edu/4hrock/.

Avoid potentially embarrassing “initiation” ceremonies. Plan appropriate activities in which everyone can choose whether or not to participate.

Leave plenty of time for questions.

Provide new families with helpful resources:

Give each new family a folder in which they can keep their 4-H club papers.

Pick up current Cloverpatch newsletters at the UWEX Office and distribute as needed.

Make sure each family has received a New Family Handbook from the UWEX Office and review it with them.

Refer new families to the Rock County 4-H website for additional resources: http://fyi.uwex.edu/4hrock/.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Don’t assume that new members and families know all about 4-H.

Just asking “Do you have any questions?” can be extremely effective.

It is the responsibility of EVERYONE in the club to welcome new families.

“4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.”

New Year, New Goals Happy New 4-H Year! Now is a good time to set goals for yourself about what you want to accomplish. S.M.A.R.T. goals are a great tool to help. S.M.A.R.T. goals must be:

S – Specific M – Measurable A – Attainable (or achievable) R – Relevant (or realistic) T – Time-bound (deadline)

Write down your goals and post them somewhere you can see them, and tell a friend or adult about

them to help keep you accountable. See at the end of the 4-H year if you accomplished your goals!

Cavy & Hamster Project New Members Welcome!

Do you own a small pet such as a guinea pig or hamster? Have you ever thought about showing an animal at the fair but thought you couldn’t because you live in the city? Well then, the Cavy & Hamster project may be for you!!!

Cavy is the scientific name for the familiar guinea pig. Cavies and hamsters shown at the fair can be from a pet store, an adoption or rescue, or from a breeder. They don’t need to be purebreds as we also have a pet class division for those of mixed breeds. Members can show up to four animals total in any combination of cavies or hamsters. They can also exhibit in showmanship for each species as well as with posters and displays. Don’t worry, your animal won’t have to stay at the fair all week. They will only need to be there on judging day.

You must have your animal(s) in your possession by April 1, 2017, to show at the 2017 fair, which means you will still have plenty of time to decide what animal would be right for you. Our first couple of meetings will be held this winter, and we will discuss animal selection as well as the care and health of your pet.

So, if you are looking to try a new project this year, check out Cavy & Hamster! If you would like more information, please contact Kathy/Mike Farrey at [email protected] or 608-754-0139.

It’s Re-Enrollment Time... Here are some project selection tips for a GREAT 2016-2017 4-H year!

Ask a leader or a 4-H friend about a new project area that sounds interesting. Look through the “Rock County 4-H Project Guide” that you will receive from your club leader

and can also be found at http://fyi.uwex.edu/4hrock/4-h-projects/. Check out the project pages on the Wisconsin 4-H website at http://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4hprojects/.

You’ll find descriptions for statewide projects, Internet resources, and links of interest.

Selecting 4-H Projects 1) Make a list of things you like to do or want to learn more about. Talk over your list with your

parents, leaders, and friends. They may recognize some special things you are good at that you don’t even realize you do well.

2) Compare your list with the projects described in the Rock County 4-H Project Guide. Ask yourself if you have the equipment, money, and time to do the projects that sound interesting.

3) When you’re ready to sign up, log onto https://wi.4honline.com and follow the steps to enroll. Your club organizational leader can help you with this process.

Please note: First year 4-H members in grades 3-5 who have not been Cloverbuds may enroll

in up to two (2) 4-H projects. The maximum number of projects for all other members is seven (7) ONLY IF ONE OF THE PROJECTS IS YOUTH LEADERSHIP. Otherwise the maximum number of projects for all other members is six (6). Clubs may not set any additional project enrollment requirements. Members on probation may enroll in only one (1) project.

And remember, you’ll learn more than “subject matter” as you complete your projects.

You’ll learn many “life skills” that you’ll use every day of your life…

understanding yourself,

communicating better,

solving problems,

making decisions,

and working with others!

Bad Weather Cancellation Policy Winter weather may force cancellation of some 4-H events. The official cancellation policy of UW-Extension Rock County requires posting on the WCLO/WJVL cancellation website. Because many areas of Rock County lack high-speed internet access and posting may take some time, we have adopted the following notification system for 4-H activities. 1. If a function is cancelled, a message will be posted at 608-757-5690.

2. Cancellations of night functions must be made by 4:30 p.m.

3. Project leaders must notify the UW-Extension Office of cancellations. Please call 608-757-5696 to notify our office of a cancellation.

Thank you for your cooperation.
