PUBLIC SPACE AND PEOPLE online workshop Public space can be the result of a customary use along time, or of urban planning as a given space with different functions like representation, social control, or commercial, among others. It also can be the outcome of a participation process – both top down (this is launched by the public administration), or bottom up, demanded by the residents. The workshop will be illustrated with examples reviewing both public spaces along history and recent relevant cases of innovation in urban and social design.

Once there is a critical mass of participants, distributed citizen sensor networks will reveal new emerging patterns that will lead to a new collective intelligence. RPI-Responsive Parametric Infrastructure : awareness

Dull cities won’t facilitate people to become a smart communities and the other way around. Most of all, we believe it is important to start from people. All citizen share a certain degree of smartness, it is all about rising up its different level of consciousness. People local and global opinions, choices and behaviour are the most precious data of third millennium.

An RPI needs to facilitate and build awareness in all level of society, no matter the cultures, the habits, and the age. We highlight three basic ingredients for increasing awarness: • 1 networking communication services • 2 share critical mass data-decision • 3 a new interface between the state and society



RPI-Responsive Parametric Infrastructure: civic and civil consciousness

Concluding, building a RPI in Turin has as an intuitive payback for communities in terms of civic and civil consciousness. The project aims at reaching a city which knows (civic) the impact and benefit of its atomic choices and take action (civil) for improving local opportunities into global smart changes.
