Public Outreach: The Museum of Transportation in Henrietta has been doing renovations this winter and has reopening on May 20, 2018. After that date, probably end of June through July, they have offered us some tables to have demos, show and tell, and building. They will be small tables arranged around the Museum. We can set up shifts for people to staff the tables. Peter Leas will follow up with Museum as group seemed positive toward the idea.

Many local groups have same issue we have with space to set up and meet. Military veteran groups, the Military History Society of Rochester, and ourselves have been talking about this mutual problem and are looking to either build a new building for the groups, which would cost about $2 million for building and maintenance, or buy an existing building such as the Army Reserve Training Center on Goodman. The working group is putting together a plan to present to local people and businesses that have indicated they would support and help fund such an endeavor. Cliff will keep us informed.

Treasurer Comments – Dave Schwab:Treasury Checking: .

Year-end report will be submitted with year to year increase of . Membership dues alone more

than twice new room rental so new room cost well covered

.

Purchase of Awards for contest. We have been purchasing awards for NorEastCon and IPMS Nationals

for intangible goodwill. Should we purchase this year as follows:

NorEastCon 47 in Long Island: $70

IPMS Nationals in Phoenix August 1-4, 2018: $90

Motion: Spend $70 For NorEastCon 47 to sponsor award from Chapter. Twenty three in favor of sponsoring NorEastCon 47 Award. None against.

Motion: Spend $90 For IPMS Nationals to sponsor award from Chapter. Twenty three in favor of sponsoring IPMS Nationals Award. None against.

Region 1 Business – Dave Schwab [https://calendar.ipmsusa3.org/region/region-1-northeast]:

Our meeting location is now corrected on IPMS Region webpage and link to Website is working as well.

General Discussion:

Contest and Show Report: None to report.

ROCON 37 [Ken Brent lead discussion]: We need to determine date of September event so we can reserve Webster Recreation Center. Suggested dates are Sundays, the 23rd or 30th. Both weekends move us from a conflict with PennConn at the middle of the month making it possible for Vendors to be at both shows. SryCon in Syracuse is near the middle of October so

these weekends are also far enough from that event.

Motion: Schedule ROCON 37 for September 23rd, 2018. Twenty three in favor of ROCON 37 on September 23rd, 2018. None against.

We will need to determine Judging approach: Conventional or Open. We can discuss after May Seminar on Open Judging. Note that Open Judging will require more judges.

Trophies: Papa Reggio Trophies & Awards has been contacted about supplying medallions [nuggets] for ROCON. The cost for completed medallions is $3 to $4 each. In comparison the previous plaques used in ROCON awards were $5.81 each BEFORE the additional labor of staining and applying markings.

Tables: Discussion on sourcing tables from another vendor. We use Taylor Rental in Webster which is right around the corner from the Rec Center. They deliver and pick up which might not be possible from other sources. Additionally this is a Webster business, like Papa Reggio’s, which is goodwill and helpful in securing the Rec Center. We will continue to use Taylor Rental and work on refining our number estimates for amount of tables.

Club Group Build: From the Facebook site there is a group build occurring with completion in June. The theme is something related to June [Battle of Midway comes to mind].

Website [Bill Gilman]: Our contract for the website has ended as of February. The redirect to Facebook page was not working as of the meeting and Bill will resolve with Chris Putnam, the webmaster.

Bill looked at alternatives to create and host a website: Site Builder, Wix, Web.com, and Go Daddy. He and Chris agree that Go Daddy is best choice as it is template driven and $10/month. It also will permit use of Paypal payment so it will provide a means in the future to register and pay for our shows via the website. For now we will not have any private information requiring members to login. If we decide to go forward with a website, which Bill is willing to create and maintain, Bill will need Steve Coykendall’s help. Steve agreed to help. Chris Putnam will also help

Motion: Use Go Daddy to create and host a website for the club at $10/month. Twenty three in favor of using Go Daddy to create and host a website for the club. None against.

Name Tags [Steve Coykendall]: Steve is creating names tags for everyone and request we tell him up to three genres that we build and the year we joined the club. He wants to display the genres and “Member Since” on the tags. Please send Steve that information.

USS Lexington [Bill Gilman]: The USS Lexington [CV-2] has been found by Paul Allen and Research Vessel Petrel in the Coral Sea where it has been since it was scuttled after being crippled by a series of explosions and fires caused by a Japanese attack during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Videos of the wreck are available on YouTube. Visible are pristine looking aircraft including a Wildcat, Devastator, and SBD Dauntless

Mel Adner Update [Jim Incavo]: Mel has joined a club in Virginia that he feels is similar to our club. He will be coming up for a visit to the area soon.

Seam Scraper [Armand Miale]: Armand brought in a Seam Scraper, designed by IPMS UK, that Dick Bagg has acquired. IPMS UK is making more and is selling them. Armand was taking request from people since he was going to be ordering one. More info at https://ipmsuk.org/membership/products-seam-scraper/ .

Military History Group [Mike Kelly]: Mike discovered that at the Greece Barnes and Noble every third Wednesday of the month there is a discussion group on Military History. Mike found the discussion interesting and, well, opinionated.

B-17 parts [David Riedel]: David is looking for some spare parts for a 1/48th B-17 that was a gift to his father-in-law. A few pieces have been lost with help from the cat. Jim Incavo said he has some spare parts for David.

Airfix Magazine [Peter Leas]: Peter subscribes to the Airfix Magazine and said the March issue has a Humbrol color cross reference chart to other brands of paint. The Magazine can be found at Barnes and Noble.

Member Photos [Neil Farukhi]: With the decision to continue the website we can resume taking member photos for the webpage. Remember you can pose with a model if you like. See Neil at one of the meetings.

SHOW AND TELL – Photos by Neil Farukhi.

Ken Brent:Ken brought in two aircraft he built for a friend in Alaska who served in the Korean War. These are aircraft he worked on in the Air Force. He was downsizing and sent them back to Ken. The first is an Italeri C-47 in 1/72nd.The second is a Rodan 1/144th C-124 GlobeMaster. The C-47 is covered with Alclad but the black under layer is coming through. To paint the red tips, Ken first used white and then red to give the same brilliance on all red colors. The Globemaster tarmac is sheet plastic with Tamiya paint. For both aircraft the mechanics give a sense of size. At 1/144th the mechanics were small and to make it interesting Ken scratch built the case next to them.

Chris Boss:Chris has completed his Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant. He likes the kit and results.

He also brought his Fairey Swordfish that he was working on last fall. He is using EZ Line for rigging and liked the

separate wing skins that revealed the rigging anchors [September 6, 2017].

The final aircraft is Chris’s build for the June Group build and is a Beaufighter cut away which is requiring LOTS of scratch building.

Phil Pucher:Phil has continued his foray into naval vessels with the Industria Mechanika FichtenFoo's Fantastical Fish-Shaped Submersible. The display base is a change from the 4x4 timbers shown in RINSM01 Rinaldi Studio Press - Single Model No.01: Fish Submarine book. A Sabre Model 1/35 GERMAN RAILWAY SCHWERER PLATTFORMWAGEN Type SSys holds the submersible in a set up similar to aircraft gun alignment/sighting fromWWII.

The Trident on the side was drawn large and shrunk to Frisket film to make a mask. Artist oils for weathering are dispensed on card board to let the excess oils get soaked up by the card board. This leaves mostly pigment and speeds drying. The nose of the fish is pivoted to show the interior which is very much steam punk.

Paul Stirrup:Paul found a box in the basement with this Tamiya KV-1 that needs more finishing. The base in CelluClay and kitty litter. Paul printed the wallpaper. The soldiers are from Verlinden and the building from Minicraft.

Ron Levy:Ron brought his Fulton entries that he made some years ago. These were brush painted. The ’29 Woody has woodgrain paper for the wood finish. The hotrod is a ’37 Willys.

Armand Miale:Armand does not recommend the Special Hobby Fairy Firefly. The wing to fuselage joint is bad. He spent 6 months at build nights which is twice his normal time. The back canopy cracked while he was masking it as it has no internal supports. He contacted Special Hobbies and they replaced the canopy very quickly. The decals are fragile. The black and white stripes are the United Nations markings to avoid theater confusion. The gray is custom mixed. Even with the kit problems, it produces a nice model.

Mike Kelly:Mike brought a 1951 Aurora Kit of a Messerschmitt 109, one of the first plastic kits, that had box art with action [pilot bailing out] which helped drive kit sales.

Mike Kelly:Mike’s Zveno SPB is a strange Russian aircraft [bomber system] with Polikarpov I-16 Type 5 parasite fighters. It is an ICM kit with soft/rubbery plastic. Both full size aircraft and model are huge. This was a 2 year build for Mike.

David Riedel:David brought in the 1/3rd scale Dyoshu kit of Japanese Katana and Wakizashi swords. On the surface these appear to be a straight forward build until you realize the handles had to be wrapped with fine cord which is difficult to do on a full size sword and extremely taxing on the kit swords.

The Terminator Skull is from 1999 and David found it on his bookshelf as a bookend. David will complete it will lights and a chrome finish.

Peter Leas:Peter brought in a 1964 Chevy Impala and a 1934 Ford. The Chevy was his first attempt to do foil on all the window trim and body trim lines.

The 34 Ford is Peter’s first attempt at kit bashing. The chassis started as an AMT Mount’n Goat Jeep chassis and the tires are from a dune buggy kit.

Roger Rouse:Roger likes Tamiya’s 1/48th series of military vehicles. He feels they maintain the detail one finds on a 1/35th

kit even though they are smaller. They also include figures. Here he has a Japan Self Defense Force Light Armored vehicle. Below that is a British 7 ton Armored Car Mk IV. Both have panel modulation via the airbrush.

Roger Rouse:Roger also brought his in work M1A1 Panther. Yes, this is a tank called a Panther that is not from WWII Germany. The Panther is a modified Abrams for mine clearing. Not only is the turret removed and rollers added, this tank is capable of being controlled remotely for crew safety. This is a Dragon kit with an expensive CMK Resin Engine. He is doing a faded desert yellow finish which will show the base green through the top desert yellow.

Ship Steve Smith:Steve brought what he called a load for a ship. It is a Heller kit and compared to Tamiya is very different.

Bill Gilman:The TSR-2 [Tactical Strike/Reconnaissance] from British Aircraft Company [BAC] was intended as a replacement for the Canberra reconnaissance aircraft but was cancelled on the day the 2nd prototype was scheduled to make its first flight. This model has lots of resin upgrades. The fuselage is about the only original part. Bill created the yellow canopy use Gunze Clear Yellow and Clear Orange mixed together and misted with an airbrush. He scribed the panel lines using a Tamiya Scriber as a push tool rather than a pull and cut tool. Sheet plastic was his straight edge. The overall paint scheme is the Nuclear Anti-Flash used by the RAF.

Jim Incavo:Jim’s current progress on a June group build tank, an Italian Fiat Ansaldo M13, that he says will be lit up and burning.

Jim is also working on a Pirate Chest fantasy creation for BuffCon with lighting, a dirigible, and something to do with a microwave oven power supply. More to follow.

Steve Coykendall [Figure Steve]:Doctor of Orthopedics, Podiatry, Reconstructive Surgery, and Horticulturist, Figure Steve seems to do it all as a Plastic Surgeon. This is a creation based on his favorite movie, Creature from the Black Lagoon. Steve calls this Death of a Mate.

Steve said the figures were good but the base was poor. He fixed the base, the logs, and made his own plants. He was going to replace everything but the base has the original. Sculptor’s signature.

Steve moved the feet and sculpted the ends of them to get the pose he wanted. He relocated the spear to a less fatal position. As he often does with his attention to detail, Steve made the female more anatomically correct.

Steve will complete by bringing in water to form the edge of the Lagoon and is considering methods to keep the material from creeping up and making a raised edge.
