FDI: restructuring the industry

• Large plants of Car industry – VW Bratislava (1991), Peugeot Trnava

(2005), KIA Žilina (2006)

• Electronics, automation, power... – Siemens, Sony, Samsung, Matsushita,

Alcatel, HP... (30% growth annually for 10 years)


Car industry

• 1 mil. car production capacity = 1 car per 5 inhabitants – highest number in Europe (world?)

• TIER 1 and 2 suppliers moved in

• TIER 3 and 4 partly moved in, partially based on home suppliers partly imported


Risks of undiversified industry

• Wide supplying infrastructure depends on a few assembly lines

• One industrial sector is predominate

• Significant competitive advantage – low labour cost – will disappear

• Risks of losing jobs in large scale!!


What to do?

• Necessity to build new competitive advantage of the region for industry

• Time is given by disappearing low-labour-cost advantage = 5 to 7 years


How to do it

• To learn and optimise suppliers network structure in the region

• Quality management skills

• Build wider sharing infrastructure

• Educate and train people – potential personnel in wider scope


Using brain – Way to stability

• To employ brain (knowledge)

• Reinforcement HEI (science and technology)
