WORK EXPERIENCE 2013
PROJECT: On-going research contract on plate design for cold startup. The highly confidential nature of this work doesn’t permit me to show images of my work.
Main duties include concept generation, prototyping, test rig design, collection of data, analysis of results, report writing and presentations for interim meetings with the client. To date I have designed 27 separate concepts and a further 25 refining our chosen design for patent applications.
In order to confidently test our designs in house before larger scale validation of designs could be undertaken in-situ, I built a humidifier with flow control in order to mimic realistic fuel cell conditions.
WORK EXPERIENCE 2012
PROJECT: ‘The Copenhagen Wheel transforms ordinary bicycles quickly into hybrid e-bikes that also function as mobile sensing units. The Copenhagen Wheel allows you to capture the energy dissipated while cycling and braking and save it for when you need a bit of a boost. Controlled through your smart phone, the Copenhagen Wheel becomes a natural extension of your everyday life. You can use your phone to unlock and lock your bike, change gears and select how much the motor assists you. It also maps pollution levels, traffic congestion, and road conditions in real-time’
I provided 3D CAD support from Vancouver to colleagues assembling the prototype at MIT in Boston. I was tasked with developing 3D printed and CNC parts to house the technology used inside the Rev3 prototype. I also created 2D drawings for manufacture, images for patents and presentations to communicate design ideas.
WORK EXPERIENCE 2011
PROJECT: Cool-Phase is a revolutionary Phase Change Material based low energy cooling, ventilation and heat recovery system for use within commercial, academic and health care environments.
Contract to assist in the development of the post prototype system. This included the redesigning of components in order to maximise ease of manufacture in house and assembly on site. I was required to remake the complete 3D model and create the full set of component and assembly drawings for initial manufacture and detailed costings. The engineering drawings and other supporting information I created were used to assist in obtaining the CE marking.
WORK EXPERIENCE 2010
PROJECT: The Windcatcher natural ventilation system channels a controlled quantity of fresh air into a room from roof level without mechanical assistance. The aims of the X-air project were to redesign the Classic GRP Windcatcher to improve system design, introduce component standardisation, reduce costs and improve efficiency. The X-air Windcatcher system features Monodraught’s patented Active Louvre system to eliminate water ingress and solar powered LED architectural lighting.
I worked as part of a small team, responsible for the entire project from initial concepts through to manufacture and supporting sales information.

DEVELOPMENT: Concepts were developed through sketching and 3D modelling. These concepts were presented to the technical director and once approved developed using Computational Fluid Dynamics, supporting calculations, rapid prototyping, smoke testing and meetings with manufacturers.
RAPID PROTOTYPING CALCULATIONSSMOKE TESTING
THE RESULT: Various forms of supporting information were produced. This included internal and external sales brochures, installation and assembly details, engineering drawings and the filing of patents. While I cannot showcase all of this work electronically I will be happy to discuss this in person. The Windcatcher X-Air halved the original cost of the system and doubled performance. The product was awarded ‘highly commended’ status at the 2011 HVR awards reaching the final four for sustainable product of the year.

PROBLEM: Bleeding the brakes of a motor vehicle is a high frequency task performed by automotive repair outlets. This task currently takes two mechanics to perform and the pumping of the brake pedal can damage seals in older vehicles.

MASTER CYLINDER FLUID CONTAINER
A compressor is used to pressurise the fluid container providing the optimum force for bleeding brakes. This is controlled by a pressure sensor and a level sensor to shut off the device should it become empty. This allows one mechanic to safely and efficiently bleed the brakes of a motor vehicle.

THE RESULT: The fully functional prototype was developed using various test rigs throughout the project in order to ensure the technology and features would function correctly. A full set of engineering and assembly drawings were created and the final product was demonstrated at the festival of design and new designers exhibition.
UNIVERSITY WORK 2ND YEAR
ANGLEPOISE: Group project to create the first anglepoise chair, that incorporated movement and encouraged interaction between the user and the product. The design was a multifunctional seating unit.
JAGUAR: Brief to design a suitable injection moulded product that could be sold as an accessory at Jaguar dealerships. It must be located in the cup holder and the styling must reflect Jaguars high price point and brand image. My design was a refillable air freshener.
UNIVERSITY WORK 1ST YEAR
NO BRIEF PROJECT: Developed alongside UK Olympic team rider Sam Cullum. This small, lightweight tool is used to remove built up ice from snowboard bindings.
TONI & GUY: Brief to design a new electric shower unit for Toni & Guy based on an existing Triton shower. The styling had to fit in with the existing product range.
LOGOSNORQUAY: Project to design the lifty hoodie to be usedas the spring uniform and the end of season staff hoodie.
