Robert Burns’ Day

DinnerWade Kendle, Editor

On Sat. , Jan. 28, the Lincoln Valley of the Scottish Rite hosted a fabulous event, its Annual Robert Burns’ Day Dinner.

HISTORICALLY

Burns Night, effectively a second national day in Scotland, is celebrated on or about Robert Burns’ birthday, the 25th of Janu-ary. Burns Suppers have sprung up around the world, and the day is more widely observed than the official national day of Scotland, Saint Andrew’s Day. The format of a Burns supper has not changed since Robert’s death in 1796. The basic format starts with a general welcome and announcements fol-lowed with the Selkirk Grace. After the grace comes the piping and cutting of the haggis, where Burns’ famous Address To a Haggis is read and the haggis is cut open. The event allows people to start eating just after the haggis is presented. This is when the reading called the Immortal Memory—an overview of Burns’ life and work—is given; the event usually concludes with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Mentoring was a big focus for Cotner Lodge this past year. From L to R - Mentors W.B. Gayle Angus, W.M. elect Greg Mason, Bro. Don Gray, new mem-ber Bro. Josh Weber and the head of the mentoring program, W.B. Don Albrecht. Val Ryckman photo

On Jan. 5, Hickman Lodge No. 256 met for their first meeting of the new year. This meeting followed the lodge Christmas party that took place on Dec. 16, in the basement of the lodge building. Family and friends were invited to share in the fellowship and a great time was had by everyone. The highlight of the night was the tasty beverages that were crafted by Bro. Doug Johnson and the good food that was prepared by Worshipful Master Gary Jarzynka.

With the holidays behind us and the meeting started, the brothers turned their attention to the matters at hand. Always looking to increase our membership with men of good character, another prospective candidate was approved to start degree work. We have a second candidate who was approved at the end of last year, so the new year will be starting with EA

degree work. We are hoping that 2012 proves to be a banner year for new membership and that our lodge will continue to grow. We look forward to the candidates starting their journey into Masonry.

W.M. Elect James Eggerling announced that his installation ceremony will take place in Hickman Lodge on Jan. 15 at 2:56 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend and there are plans for chili and cinnamon rolls to be served in the basement afterwards. We all look forward to W.M. Elect James’s term and having another Eggerling hold the highly distinguished post. When the meeting concluded, we retired to the basement for some amazing snacks prepared by Doug Johnson’s wife. Our lodge has been spoiled this past year by her amazing baking skills and her deserts at the end of our meetings will be sorely missed.

Hickman Lodge No. 256 held its Installation of Officers for 2012 on Jan 15. Those installed were front row: Bro. Roger Schwindt, Bro. Thomas Kess, W.B. Jerry Sievers, W.B. Olin Boone, W.B. Gary Jarzynka second row: Bro. Jeff Eggerling, Bro. John “Jack” Irons, back row: Bro. Doug Johnson, W.M. James Eggerling, Bro. Greg Vlasnik, and W.B. Bill Nelson. Courtesy photo

LODGE PROFICIENCY

Congratulations are in order for the 2012 team on being reported as proficient in all 3 degrees. W.B. Steve Green stated after the proficiency on Dec. 12, that he would be pleased to inform the Grand Custodian of their competency for the upcoming year.

MENTORING

Last January. W.B. Don Albrecht instituted a new mentoring program at Cotner Lodge. Weekly Masonic education by e-mail was provided to each candidate from the moment they had been voted on until 6 months after their Master’s degree. A personal mentor was also assigned to help the new initiates integrate into the Lodge and the Fraternity. The effect of this was a greater involvement of the new members and a lightening of the load on mentors making it more attractive to more Lodge members. The new members expressed great appreciation for the information and attention this new process provided.

REGuLARCOMMuNICATION

Pork roast, mashed potatoes and Masonic green beans were on the menu preceding the regular communication on Jan. 2. A very informative presentation on the proposed Registered Student Organization at UNL was given by W.B. Wade Kendle and Bro. Zackary Soderquist of Liberty Lodge No. 300. The regular communication started promptly at 7:30 p.m. An affirmative vote was collected on one new petition. Committee reports, correspondence and Masonic education were presented along with the year end statistics. The Grand Lodge proposals were read and discussed.

A motion was made and passed for dues payment for 5 Brothers in distress. W.B. Ralph Riemann was installed as secretary for the ensuing year. A Memorial Service was given by W.B. John Quinn with the assistance of W.B. Ralph Riemann and W.B. Charlie Cummings for Bro. Jacob Huck. Bro. Huck was the only Cotner member to have passed in 2011. W.B. Gayle Angus was conducted West of the altar and was presented with a certificate, card and pin to acknowledge him becoming a perpetual member of Cotner Lodge. W.M. Ryckman had a few closing remarks thanking the Lodge for their participation in a great year

and encouragement to continue their involvement in the year to come.

BuSINESS MEETING

The January business meeting began with the festive board being spread with spaghetti and meat balls served by the girls from Bethel 27. The regular business was conducted and we were graced with a visit from W.B. Dennis Ditloff, Past Master of Silver Lodge No. 266 and the Polk Lodge No. 311. Both Lodges, however, both have consolidated with others. Silver Lodge consolidated with Osceeola No. 65 in 1991 and Polk Lodge consolidated with Solar No. 134 of Clarks in 2007. W.B. After starting mout-to-mout, Ole says “Uff da, I don’t recall Sven having breath diss bad”...To which Lena replies “I don’t tink he was wearing dat red snowmobile suit eider”.

STATED MEETING

Worthy Matron Laurie opened the Jan. 9 meeting by sharing information about how the Romans changed January to be the first month of the year. Worthy Patron Don welcomed us.

Sis. Laurie thanked everyone for helping her have a successful year as Worthy Matron. She talked about all the fun times we had gathering together. There was the Christmas Party, the Blue River Chapter Christmas party, church and brunch and attending plays at Wesleyan together. She stated that if we would like to attend plays at Wesleyan in the future she would be happy to get us tickets. She also thanked everyone for sending Christmas cards to Jenn Birdsall. She knew it made it easy for Jenn to be away from home at Christmas. She reminded us that we could send Jenn Valentines as well.

Sis. Laurie stated that all the responsibilities for the Grand Supervisors’ School of Instruction

were taken care of except for Monday. She asked for volunteers.

Sis. Laurie shared that Deidre Hoffman thanked Eastern Star for all their support and her band scholarship to the Masonic Band Camp. This year she will be a new counselor for the camp. It was moved and seconded to provide $260 for a band camp scholarship for this coming year.

It was also moved and seconded to send $50 to Nebraska Masonic Home for Children to support their chili supper. The chili feed will be held on Feb. 11.

Temple chapter has received many invitations for installations. Those were read to the chapter. They can also be found in the Masonic news for December.

COuRTESY REPORT

Dorothy Munson passed away on Dec. 19, 2011. She is the sister of Elizabeth Brinkman and Marjorie Culp members of Temple chapter. Sympathy cards have been sent to

her family as well as to her sisters.Sis. Laurie shared her year-

end report of our “Gathering Together” throughout the year and she reported that Sis. Robin Throckmorton was engaged to Bro. Greg Mason during Christmas. Sis. Robin also has a nephew in Omaha that she thinks should qualify for the band camp scholarship. Sis. Robin also has volunteered to help us out with the duties of Associate Conductress since we don’t have anyone at the present time.

Sis. Lorrie Bryant shared some of the plans for her new year as Worthy Matron. She said there would be some changes. She hoped everyone would be supportive with that. She also shared details of the installation ceremony.

Bro. Don’s closing remarks were about “Change.” He shared that St. Augustine wrote that Hope has two beautiful daughters: Anger and Courage. We hope for things to be better but it often takes anger and courage to make the change.

ANNuALCOMMuNICATION

T h e 1 5 5 t h A n n u a l Communication of the Most Worshipful, The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Nebraska took place Feb. 2-4 in Kearney at the newly opened Younes Convention Center and may have found a permanent home depending upon the will of the elected Grand Junior Warden. For sure, the next three Annual Communications will be in Kearney at a wonderful facility.

PuBLIC OPENING

The pomp and circumstance of our fraternity was on display with the Public Opening of Grand Lodge on Feb. 2 at 8:30 a.m. The Public Opening of Grand Lodge commenced with the seating of the Grand Lodge Officers and their Ladies. Prayer was observed followed by the posting of colors by Heroes of ’76, Joseph Warren Camp of the National Sojourners and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Most Worshipful Brother Bruce A. Baker, Grand Master of the Masons of Nebraska, then welcomed all to this, the 155th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Nebraska. Following the introduction of Nebraska Masonic Body Leaders, greetings were brought by a member of the Kearney City Council. Bro. Paul Younes, owner of the Younes Convention Center and a member of Rob Morris Lodge No. 46 brought greetings and made sure all were aware that his staff was there to serve our needs. Later on in the session, Bro. Paul was even seen serving some of the dinners himself.

After Bro. Paul, the Masonic Youth Group leaders were up next. Grand Worthy Advisor of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, Shanda Lyn Born brought greetings on behalf of Nebraska Rainbow. Ashley

Murphy, Miss Nebraska Job’s Daughter, brought greetings on behalf of Nebraska Job’s Daughters, and State Master Councilor, Dalton Kock, who was recently raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason, brought greetings on behalf on Nebraska DeMolay.

Bro. Dalton, along with State Junior Councilor Adam Medley, then presented the DeMolay Mason of the Year to Bro. James Carlton, a member of Bellevue Lodge No. 325 who serves on many Masonic Boards. They then presented the DeMolay Sponsoring Body of the Year to Tangier Shrine of Omaha. A funny moment occurred when Bro. Dalton announced that State Junior Councilor Adam recently turned 18 and had not been presented a petition to join the Masons yet. M.W.B. Bruce Baker made sure Adam had a petition in hand before he left.

Next greetings were brought by Worthy Grand Matron Carol Hudkins and Worthy Grand Patron Carl Plants of Nebraska Order of the Eastern Star. Greetings were also brought by a member of the Social Order of the Beauceant No. 177 in North Platte.

The Grand Master then presented several awards. The Change for the Troops program recognized Platte Valley Lodge No. 32 for Total Contributions winner and Plainview Lodge No. 204 for the per capita winner. The Membership Award for large lodges was presented to our own Cotner Lodge No. 297 and the one for small lodges to Franklin Lodge No. 264, Franklin.

NECROLOGY REPORT

Next came the Necrology Report. We then proceeded to view the names of all of the 347 Nebraska Masons that were called home during 2011.

GRAND ORATION

Grand Orator, W.B. John

B. Ferguson, gave his official oration followed by the retiring of the Grand Lodge Officers and purging of the room for the morning business session.

OTHER AWARDS

The Rock Maul Award was presented during the Membership Banquet Friday night. It is presented to the Lodge deemed to be the most outstanding Lodge for the year by the Grand Master. The Large Lodge recipient this year was Cotner Lodge No. 297. Since the Rock Maul began being presented in 1981, Lincoln lodges have been awarded it a total of 12 times. Hickman No. 256 won in 1985, Lancaster No. 54 in 1989 and 2011, North Star No. 227 in 1994, Craftsmen No. 314 in 1998, Liberty No. 300 in 2005, and Cotner No. 297 should be deemed the lodge of the 21st Century winning the award in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012. Cotner Lodge was also one of five lodges presented the Pillar Award.

GRAND LODGE INSTAL-LATION OF OFFICERS

The Installation of Officers for the 2012 Grand Lodge Officers will be held Feb. 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Waterloo Lodge No. 102, 300 Hopper St., Elkhorn.

GEORGE WASHINGTON BIBLE ON LOAN

The Bible that Bro. George Washington took his first oath of office on is currently in Nebraska and will be displayed at the Installation of the Grand Lodge Officers. Because this is a once in a lifetime event, Waterloo Lodge No. 102, Elkhorn, will be having an open house on Feb. 11 from 2-4:00 p.m. to allow the public an opportunity to see the bible. Nebraska is lucky to have such an opportunity and I hope some of our readers can take advantage of it.

vision of hope.” Her Flower this year is the Sunflower. Her honor stations are Associate Matron and Ruth with her colors being The Rays of the Eastern Star. Her scripture verse is Genesis 1:14-15.

After the Installation of Officers, there was a brief recess with entertainment provided by Bro. Brent and Sis. Lisa Myers daughter Larissa (7) who began playing a piece on the piano, followed by Sis. Deb and Bro. Wade’s daughters Belle (11) and Katrina (9) singing a duet and ending with Larissa playing a piece on her violin. It was beautiful and amazing! Thank you Larissa, Katrina, and Belle!!

W.M. Deb thanked all of her 2012 officers for saying “Yes” in being an officer. She also announced that Myrtle Chapter will hold a Coin March at every meeting and event with the proceeds going to the RITECARE Clinic here in Lincoln. She plans to do some joint events with North Star Lodge and Bethel 27 and hopes the Masonic Community can host a single event for all organizations. She presented a calendar of events for the upcoming year and invited all to attend. W.P. Brent thanked everyone for coming and introduced his family. The Installation continued with Bethels 5 and 27 performing the Living Cross. W.M. Deb closed the Installation with a quote she found on the Markee of her Church that morning saying: “May all your days be filled with sonshine.” In the final formation, the members of Myrtle Chapter formed a cross with the altar in the center. It was a wonderful afternoon.

Personal Note: I just want to thank all who came out that afternoon to attend Myrtle Chapter’s Installation of Officers. It was great to see so many on the sidelines. I invite all of you to attend any upcoming event. Thank you again.

DeMolay is not the end of the line. When we reach majority, we often become Masons. Being in DeMolay puts us in the unique position to be better prepared for the greater Masonic family. That is why we, Eiche Chapter Order of DeMolay, were honored to attend and have Jon Lighthall and Wyatt McLeod pull chairs for the Installation of Officers for East Lincoln Lodge Number 210.

Many of our advisors were being installed into new positions. Dad Garen Miller was installed as Senior Warden, and Dad Scott Dodge was installed as the Secretary and Treasurer. We saw going to this installation as not only a way to support several of our advisors but also to watch and learn what Masonry is really about from an unfiltered view. Many of the Eiche boy’s are now hoping to soon be Masons themselves.

Eiche was very thankful for also being invited to the Capital Chapter Number 320 Order of

the Eastern Star Installation of Officers were our own Mom Cindee Lighthall and Brother Mark Lighthall were installed as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron.

Jon Lighthall and I were much obliged to pull chairs for the Installation but the other Eiche boy’s came to support Mom Lighthall during her moment of glory when she was crowned.

DeMolay has many life changing and magnificent lessons to teach each young man that swears by its virtues. However, we could not do all of those things if it were not our adult supervisors who are always there for us, so we decided we would be there for them.

DeMolay is for boys 10-21. For informa-tion on joining Eiche Chap t e r, c on t a c t :

We are confident these newly installed officers will lead our Lodge to many achievements in the new year and bring our Order continued success.

One of the many highlights of the evening came after the formal installation. Past Matron

Martha Cabieles of Capitol Chapter 320, OES, presented her son, our Worshipful Master Jairo, with a special gift — a plaque and the gavel his late father, Luis O. Cabieles, used while he served as Worshipful Master of Sunnyside Lodge 577 in Hawthorne, Calif., in 1991. (Jairo Cabieles also is the Eastern Star Grand Representative to Australia in Nebraska.) May our Worshipful Master wield this instrument with integrity, resourcefulness and objectivity.
