La Salle’s Background• La Salle was born on November 22, 1643 in

Rouen, France.• He was a nobleman and a Jesuit. (Jesuit-

Members of a Roman Catholic religious order that is officially called the Society of Jesus).

• When La Salle was younger he enjoyed science and nature.

• His real name is Rene- Cavelier. Cavelier- knight.• He died on March 20th, 1687 in Texas when 3 of

his men shot him.

First Expedition

• La Salle’s first expedition started in 1669. During his expedition he met Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette who were the first white men to explore and map the Mississippi River in Hamilton, Ohio. The expedition continued until they reached the Ohio River.

• When he returned to Canada he oversaw the building of Fort Frontenac (located now in Kingston, Ohio).

• The purpose of the expedition was to claim land for France. Because of this he is called the “Father of Tennessee Territory”.

Second Expedition• Robert De La Salle was sent by King Louis XIV (14) to

travel down south from Canada to sail down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. La Salle was the first European to travel the length of the Mississippi River. He was also the first European to sail down the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes.(Great Lakes- Michigan, Erie, Ontario, Huron, Superior) France was financing the trip.

• The purpose of the trip was to travel to the Rio Grande to take over Spanish mines which was what King Louis XIV (14) originally wanted.

• Robert De La Salle’s route started from France to the southern end of Lake Ontario. He went across Lake Erie, through the Strait of Detroit and across Lake St. Clair. He then went across Lake Huron and reached Green Bay, WI on Lake Michigan.

How did he interact with the Native Indians?

• When La Salle was exploring the Native Indians thought he was intruding. They realized he wasn’t and they started sharing weapons.

What were the obstacles that he faced?

• An obstacle Robert De La Salle faced was when he and some of his men were on their way to the Mississippi River his men were starving so he set off for some help.

1643- La Salle was born in Rouen, France.

1666- La Salle sets sail for New France in Canada.

1668- Iroquois tell La Salle of two great rivers: the Ohio and the Mississippi.

1669- First expedition goes in search of the Ohio River.

1682- Second expedition finds the mouth of the Mississippi River.

1684- La Salle leaves from France with four ships.

1687- La Salle is killed by angry French settlers.
