Except that I’m talking about off-road racing and my latest motorsport escapade has been as a co-driver in what they term a side-by-side – somewhere between an over-sized quad and a miniaturised off-road buggy. I compete in the South African Cross Country Series, in a class specifically for these fast ‘n’ furious racers. And it has been some of the best fun of my life! As co-driver I make sure we’re heading in the right direction and staying on the course, and I also warn my driver of hazards ahead as highlighted in the navigator’s notes. I’m also expected to be the go-to guy if something breaks or if a wheel needs changing. It is super-intense but great for mental focus. It is also proving to be quite a physical challenge and a reminder that maybe I should give my chassis a tune-up and some TLC! Talking tune-ups and TLC of the automotive kind, you know who to call. Even easier, book your car in on line for servicing by emailing [email protected] and we’ll get back to you. Because as I’m finding out in the SACCS, preventative maintenance is easier (and cheaper) than repair… Rob Green Rob Green at Zwartkops recently, getting some driver coaching in the back of the Stigworx van

Werner ownsMOTO–NETIX, a company whichspecialises in these exciting off-roadvehicles. They finished second after a

gruelling Battlefields 400 eventrecently, and after two roundsthey’re second in the class. They’llbe back in action on the Toyota1000 Desert Race in Botswana nextmonth and with the boss’simproving navigation skills they’rehoping for more of the same!

TORQUE DEALERS. Need to get Torque, at a convenientlocation near you? Look here:Torque Dealers

OMG... AMG!It’s the most powerful four-cylinder production engine in the world – andwe’ve made it more powerful! The latest version of the Mercedes-Benz A45AMG makes 280kW, which we’ve bumped up to 310 and taken torque to anequally impressive 570Nm!The gains are thanks to a tuning solution which is as Germanic as the car to which it

is fitted: Novatune. We’re the sole South African agent for the brand, which boasts animpressive international reputation – especially when it comes to German cars. Inaddition to the software we have custom-made a 76mm stainless steel Techniflowdownpipe, contributing to the 30kW and 95 Nm gain.We offer the same engine management +

downpipe upgrade on the 265kWfirst-generation A45, with similar power andtorque improvements. “In standard form, M-B quote a 4.2 second

0 – 100 time and while we haven’t gotaround to testing one independently, we’dexpect it to get very close to a late 3 secondsprint – that puts it into supercar territory,”commented Steve Green.

GETTING OUR DUCKSIN A ROW!News for fans of our Golf7 R project car: boxes of custom-made engine bits arestarting to arrive and we’re almost ready to get into the engine room and startputting things together…watch our FB page for details.

AN ITALIAN STALLION...MOTORSPORT UPDATE Well done to Daniel Rowe, whotook his first ever GTC victoryrecently – in a car tuned by RGM!Young Dan drove the perfect secondrace in Cape Town on April 21,manoeuvring his way to the frontfrom fourth on the grid and thenpulling out a lead of nearly threeseconds by the flag.Keagan Masters, reigning GTC2

champion, was completelydominant, winning both races – in a Golf7 GTI tuned by us too.A month later the GTC series was

back in Gauteng, visiting Zwartkopsfor the first time this year for tworaces on May 12. And it was a caseof more of the same: after problemsin the first race, Rowe stamped hisauthority on the second, whileMasters went home with a first anda second. At the risk of sounding immodest,

we’re a tough act to follow when itcomes to tuning fast Volkswagens!

CLOSING STATEMENT Keeping abreast of new technologyin our industry remains a keymotivator at RGMotorsport and arecent upgrade is the acquisition of aNew Genius remapping tool fromDimsport. They’re a leader in ECUtuning devices and the Genius willenable us to continue ensuring thebest possible outcomes when tuningengine management computers viathe OBDII port for maximum powerand efficiency, without compromisingvehicle reliability!

This Alfa Romeo 4C Project Car update, first mentioned in these pages acouple of months back, has been completed and was finally lashed downto our dyno just hours before we mailed this newsletter. With an extended running-in period, this ultra-trick version of Alfa’s sports car

has been handled with kid gloves up until now, but it has been worth the wait: onour dyno it finally peaked at 388kW @ 6 500 rpm, up from 177kW @ 6 000 instock form. Torque has gone from 350Nm @ 2 200 rpm to 522 @ 6 000 – thisItalian Stallion really gave the rollers a workout! Just to refresh your memory, itboasts water-methanol injection and engine internals that are custom: the goodielist includes Omega pistons and Arrow Rods, a gas-flowed head, GarrettGTX28/71R Ball Bearing Turbo, custom ceramic-coated turbo manifold, Mocalgearbox oil cooler and an Alfaworks clutch kit to help it cope.We went big on this one and in the interest of long-term reliability the

specification also includes an anti-oil surge device, because thanks to Toyo R888tyres, this car will be generating high cornering Gs. For the owner, this is where the playtime begins!
