This summer, NYPL and Teachers & Writers Collaborative will host poetry-writing workshops in which kids will create poetic tributes to New York City. The poems written in the workshops will be collected and published in an anthology in 2013. This workshop builds on Teachers & Writers Collaborative’s earlier poetry workshops with young people. Children’s writing from those workshops has been adapted into a single narrative called A Poem as Big as New York City, which Rizzoli will publish in the fall. For ages 7 to 12.Bronx :: Castle Hill Tues, Aug 14; 11 a.m.City Island Mon, Aug 6; 2 p.m. Clason’s Point Mon, Jul 16; 2:30 p.m.Francis Martin Wed, Aug 15; 3 p.m.Grand Concourse Wed, Aug 8; 2 p.m. Melrose Tues, Jul 31; 2 p.m. Mott Haven Tues, Jul 10; 3 p.m. Soundview Mon, Aug 20; 3:30 p.m. Manhattan :: Children’s Center at 42nd Street Sat, Aug 11; 3 p.m. Inwood Thurs, Jul 19; 3 p.m. Roosevelt Island Wed, Jul 18; 4 p.m. Staten ISland :: Tottenville Thurs, Aug 9; 3 p.m.

Go, Slow, and Whoa Stoplight Kids learn which foods are great to eat every day, which foods they should eat less often, and which ones aren’t a good choice at all. Presented by the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. For ages 5 and older. Limited to 25 participants. Summer Reading 2012

Welcome to Summer Reading!

Summer Reading is fun for children of all ages who want to keep their reading skills sharp over the summer vacation. anyone can sign up: babies, preschoolers, kids, teens, and even adults. This year, there are lots of fun summer programs and activities planned at libraries in the bronx, Manhattan, and Staten island. at the end of the summer, the top children and teen readers from each borough will earn a special chance to go to a yankees home game, take a bow on the ball field, and meet a star player (last year’s top Summer Readers met Curtis granderson).

To sign up and get more information, visit www.summerreading.org, where you can also discover lots of exciting online summer-reading activities and rate the books you read.

When Michael Pineda grows up, he wants to be an astronomer. Or an astronaut. Or a biologist. Or a zoologist. Or a train operator.

These are just some of the many worlds the seven-year-old from the Van Cortlandt Park section of the Bronx discovered through books and reading during the Library’s Summer Reading program last year.

In all, Michael read 262 books in three months, which made him NYPL’s top Summer Reader from the Bronx. Together with the other top Summer Readers, the budding bookworm was feted on the field at Yankee Stadium and got a chance to meet center fielder Curtis Granderson.

“I was so proud of myself,” says Michael, who displays the ball that Granderson signed for him in his living room, near his usual piles of nearly 50 library books from the Van Cortlandt Library. “I got to see the Yankees and they won!”

Michael’s mom, Vernessa Pineda, says Summer Reading was a great way for Michael to spend his vacation exploring, even if the family didn’t have a chance to go away.

“Because we didn’t go anywhere, he would just read one book after another,” she says. “He loved it. He loves finding out about new things.”

In addition, Pineda says Michael loved logging on to www.summerreading.org to keep track of the books he read, review them, and read comments from other kids. He loves to read but has never liked writing, says Pineda. “Summer Reading made him like to write more too.”

TOP michael, second from left, was feted on the field at yankee Stadium last august along with other top Summer readers from across the city.

BOTTOM before the game, michael met center fielder Curtis granderson and got an autographed ball.

TIPS FOR GROWING READERS

1. Read to children from the time they are born. It’s never too early to start!

2. Set aside a special time to read, when you and your family are relaxed.

3. Children enjoy setting the pace of reading time. Encourage them to turn the pages.

4. Many children like to hear the same story again and again. It comforts them and helps

develop language skills.

5. Visit the library often to choose books and enjoy programs together.

And, of course, join Summer Reading at your neighborhood library!

CULINARY ADVENTURES

NYPL’s major new exhibition, Lunch Hour NYC, which opens at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street on June 22, tells the story of the clamor and chaos of lunchtime in New York, including the creation of school lunch and the “quick lunch” before the invention of modern-day fast food. In conjunction with Lunch Hour NYC, the Library is hosting a series of programs about food and cooking, beginning with a teen cooking class this summer:

From Garden to PlateTeen chefs learn about kitchen chemistry through basic cooking techniques, then create tasty dishes from food grown in the Seward Park Library garden. Manhattan :: Seward Park Library Thurs, Jun 14, 21, 28; Jul 5, 12, 19, 26; Aug 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; 4 p.m.

is the Lead Corporate Sponsor of the Lunch Hour NYC exhibition and related programming.

Q&A: TWO 2011 TOP TEEN SUMMER READERS

Susan Ng and Devlynn Chen are good friends—and even better readers. To earn their spots as last year’s top teen Summer Readers in Manhattan, Susan read 348 books and Devlynn read 150. Here, the 16-year-old Bronx Science students talk about their favorite writers and offer tips for this year’s readers.

What do you like to read?Susan: Shoujo manga (Japanese comics and cartoons geared toward girls) and anything romance.Devlynn: Romance, but I love the classics too!

Who are your favorite authors?Devlynn: Mark Twain (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is my favorite!). Susan: Alan Lawrence Sitomer [The Downside of Being Up, The Secret Story of Sonia Rodriguez].

What’s your favorite thing about reading?Devlynn: Reading is like searching for an adventure. You can be in the middle of New York City on the train yet feel like Huck Finn did when he traveled down the Mississippi. Susan: In romance novels, I like how the characters interact with each other and how they talk about their feelings.

Do you have any advice for this year’s Summer Reading participants?Susan: You don’t need to read 800 books, but just picking up a book and reading the back cover is a good start. Devlynn: Just do it! It’s actually fun!

Sign up for Summer Reading at www.summerreading.org.

Devlynn Chen (left) and Susan Ng live on the Lower East Side and spend time at Seward Park Library.
