Once again, the Roanoke Jaycees gave Roanokers an oppor-

tunity to face their fears at their award-winning haunted

house. The Jaycees “Fear Factory” brought spine-tingling

chills to Orange Avenue for six nights this October.

The event took over six weeks to plan and organize. Many

volunteers were recruited to help design the various room

scenes and serve as actors each night.

Last year’s Fear Factory was awarded the Vir-

ginia Jaycee’s Broom Hilda Award for Best

Haunted House. This year’s events took place

in the same location and had about the same

attendance.

Also similar to 2011, visitors could donate a

canned food item for a dollar off of admission.

At the end, the Jaycees were delivered a pick-

up truck load of canned food items to Feeding

America Southwest Virginia. A cash donation

will also be made to Camp Virginia Jaycee.

Another Successful Year of Fear

Seasons greetings current and former Roanoke Jaycee Mem-bers! We wish you a joyous holiday season and a very happy new year.

We are taking this time reflect upon a on noteworthy year for the Jaycees. With your help, we’ve been able to reach out further into the commu-nity and make a greater im-pact than ever before.

This year, we held two very large and very successful events—Big Lick Beertopia and Fear Factory. Thank you to those who dedicated their time to planning and putting on these unique events.

In between the beer and frights, we got out into the community helping many other local organizations

meet their needs. We col-lected canned goods for the hungry, cheered on runners at 4 on the Fourth, and el-bowed with celebrities at a golf tournament.

Again, thank you for your support. We look forward to making 2013 another hallmark year.

“There can’t be good living where there is not good

drinking.” Benjamin Franklin c1745

On June 9th, the Roanoke Jaycees brought good living and

good drinking to the Valley by presenting the second-annual

Big Lick Beertopia (formerly Brewtopia).

Over 1,400 people—a 40% increase over last year’s festival

came out to the Salem Red Sox Stadium to taste beers made

by craft breweries located throughout the country. Live music

by local artists the Materia Project and Corey Hunley provided

a steady groove throughout the event and a corn toss tourna-

ment provided additional entertainment.

New this year, the Jaycees partnered with the Star City Brew-

ers Guild to host a home brew competition. Contestants en-

tered their best recipes in four different categories. Kevin

Campbell was declared winner of the Home Brew Competi-

tion with his “Babymaker” American Barleywine.

Of the money raised this year, over $2,000 was given to local

charities including CHIP, Easter Seals, the Food Pantry, and

Camp Virginia Jaycee.

“Big Lick Beertopia was a huge success this year and we’ve

heard nothing but positive feedback,” said Kevin Hurt, one

of this year’s driving forces behind the event. “Beertopia is

an incredible fundraiser for our chapter as well as a great

opportunity for our members to develop their leadership

skills. Next year should be even better!”

The success of Beertopia will hopefully be replicated at next

year’s event which is tentatively scheduled for June 8th. Mark

your calendars now so you don’t miss out on one of the Val-

ley’s premier craft beer festivals and a great opportunity to

support the Roanoke Jaycees!

Stamp Out Hunger On May 12th, ten Jaycees helped sort food for

four hours as part of the annual Stamp Out Hun-

ger food drive.

During the drive, nonperishable foods are collect-

ed by U.S. Postal Service workers and sorted by

volunteers. These good help replenish the shelves

of the Feeding America Southwest Virginia food

bank. This year, a record 2,000 pounds of food

were collected to help feed needy individuals and

families in our community.

Jaycees Cheer on 4 on the Fourth Racers

Mayor Bowers Inspires at Jaycees Dinner Meeting

Member Spotlight— Diana Hackenburg

The Jaycees kicked off Independence Day by helping with the 4 on the Fourth race in

downtown Roanoke. Our volunteers made sure the course was safe and clear while also

cheering on the 300+ participants as they run and/or walked the four miles.

The race, sponsored by Hometown Bank, benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of South-

west Virginia. Photos: Jaycee volunteers (left); after-race ceremonies (right)

started work with the West-

ern Virginia Land Trust, a

local nonprofit in April.

So far, Diana has helped

with several Jaycees activi-

ties including Beertopia,

serving dinner at the Ronald

McDonald house, and Four

on the Fourth. Diana also

produced the spring and

winter newsletters.

“Joining the Jaycees has

been a great way to network

and use my skills to help oth-

er people,” said Diana. “I

enjoy providing support to

these different community

events that wouldn’t be

possible without hard-

working volunteers.”

Diana’s favorite Jaycees

moment so far? “I think it

had to be Beertopia. I

poured beer for The River

Transported from the Mid-

west, Diana joined the Jay-

cees last spring to meet new

people and learn more

about her new home, Roa-

noke.

Diana moved to Roanoke to

join her boyfriend, Jesse

Freedman, who works with

Hollins University and

Emory & Henry College as

an Energy Manager. Diana

Bowers, a former Jaycee,

spoke about how his experi-

ences with the organization

prepared him for life as a

public servant. He also

talked about how we can

work to make our Jaycee

chapter stronger and better

able to make a difference in

the community.

It’s not everyday you get to

join the Mayor for a little

pre-dinner chat. However,

the Roanoke Jaycees, got an

opportunity to hear and

speak with Roanoke’s

Mayor David Bowers at

their June 19, 2012 dinner

meeting at Corned Beef &

Co.

Mayor Bowers is currently

serving his second-

consecutive and fourth term

overall as mayor. Rumor has

it that he is currently consid-

ering a run for the Demo-

cratic nomination for state

lieutenant governor next

year.

Jaycee Creed We Believe...

That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life;

That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;

That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;

That government should be of laws rather than of men;

That earth's great treasure lies in human person-ality;

And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

hope to increase that amount

this year.

The JJ Redick Foundation was

created by NBA player and Ro-

anoke-native JJ Redick to bene-

fit underprivileged youth. Their

mission fits well with the Jay-

cees goal of creating positive

change in communities by

addressing the needs of oth-

ers.

When the JJ Redick Founda-

tion sponsored its 2nd Celebri-

ty Golf Tournament on Au-

gust 18, 2012, the Roanoke

Jaycees were there to provide

the support needed for a suc-

cessful event.

Fifteen Jaycees helped in vari-

ous capacities throughout the

tournament. Volunteers valet

parked cars, ran the hole-in-

one contest, assisted with put-

ting, and oversaw the three-

point contest. In addition, sup-

port was provided for both the

tournament pre– and post-

parties.

The event raised $110,000 for

CHIP and Children’s Miracle

Network in 2011 and they
