VAFC Road to Reform Workshops on Strategy Development The purpose of the Road to Reform initiative is to support free clinics in the development of strategic plans for their future under health care reform (regardless if the expansion of Medicaid progresses). Each participating free clinic is encouraged to develop a strategic plan for implementation in 2013 or 2014. This will require a process of strategy development in which each clinic analyzes its current situation, community needs & resources, examines futures scenarios, develops a strategic plan, and assures execution of that plan. In response to the high level of interest expressed by free clinic leaders in the Road to Reform Support Survey, the project is providing a series of Strategy Development Workshops for free clinic leaders, as outlined below. Purpose The purpose of the Strategy Development Workshop is to equip free clinic leaders with a practical process and set of tools for strategy development that will help free clinics evolve to meet changing demands of their communities and constituencies. Facilitator The workshops will be facilitated by Stephen Horan, PhD, Community Health Solutions and are generously supported by the Virginia Health Care Foundation Participants Participants include free clinic executive directors and select board members, volunteer leaders, and key management personnel. We encourage each free clinic to bring a team of no more than four people (total) who will be directly involved in strategy development at your organization. Objectives Workshop participants will learn how to lead a strategy development process for their organization, including: The elements of strategy development Who to involve in strategy development How to analyze the current situation of the organization How to examine future scenarios for the organization How to develop a strategic plan for the organization How to assure execution & evaluation of the strategic plan Product Workshop participants will produce a Strategy Development Plan for their organization with the goal of having a strategic plan ready for implementation in 2013 or 2014. Format Workshop participants will sit together in teams as they: Participate in a training session on the above objectives Complete a series of strategy development worksheets Produce a Strategy Development Plan for their organization. Each workshop participant will be given a workbook which they will complete during and after the workshop. Follow-Up Workshop participants will receive follow-up supports via group webinars on selected topics, and via the online Road to Reform Support Community. Evaluation Workshop participants will be asked to evaluate the event for quality assurance and improvement.
