Water plays a vital role in Australia’s infrastructure. With marine transport being one of the most important forms of transportation within Australia, marine infrastructure must be effectively maintained. VEC have made the natural progression from bridge constructions to include marine infrastructure within our capabilities, including:• Wharf upgrades & construction;• Floating pontoon construction;• Removal & installation of cathodic protection systems;• Removal of redundant bollards, as well as refurbishment of

existing bollards;• Supply & installation of reinforced concrete pile caps and new

fender units; and• Supply & installation of wharf furniture such as access ladders,

handrails & other steel works;

Fundamental to remediation of reinforced concrete structures is a capability to provide concrete repair services and a technical understanding of corrosion mitigation in these structures. Services we can provide include:• Concrete repair;• Technical understanding of

corrosion mitigation; • The removal of existing

contaminated or damaged concrete; and

• The replacement with new shrinkage modified repair mortars.

VEC hydro-demolition equipment includes a robotic space frame, and it can be positioned, fixed to the structure and operated remotely.

Water related infrastructure has become a key diversification contributing to the company’s ongoing growth and success.We undertake design, construction and upgrades on water infrastructure including:• Dams;• Water conveyance structures including flumes &

pipelines; and• Pump stations & irrigation schemes.

VEC’s pile driving capability ensures efficiency, reliability and cost effectiveness for our clients. Our equipment and services include:• A state-of-the-art Junttan pile rig:

• The Junttan drives precast concrete piles, steel piles and timber piles up to 18m; and

• Features rotary side augur unit for pre-drilling.• Excavator mounted piling rigs with a variable hammer weights:

• Easy conversion to cranes & excavators for site preparation & cleanup; and• All machines are capable of driving timber, steel and concrete piles.

• Splices that can be used to enable the driving of longer piles where required.• A Side Grip Vibratory Hammer.• A pile design service (including pile splices).• The capability to perform inhouse Pile Driving Analyser (PDA) testing using the

CAPWAP® software.

Water Infrastructure

VEC has strong capabilities and experience in civil infrastructure, including all aspects of road construction and earthworks. We have constructed many federal and state government-funded highways and roads, as well as undertaking extensive bulk earthworks in various locations around Australia. We are experienced in working across a wide spectrum of project delivery models and also undertake industrial and commercial developments.Key to our success in this field is expertise in pavements, efficient management of our workforce and integration with subcontractors. We spend considerable resources on the research and development of new construction techniques and practices.We manage all aspects of road construction including:• Design review;• Service relocation;• Drainage;• Earthworks (clearing, stripping, load ins, haul ins and

placement);• Placement of gravel pavements;• Stabilisation of sub-grades and pavements;• Sealing/asphalt;• Traffic management;• Landscaping; and• Working in environmentally sensitive areas.

Road Construction

Since 1996, VEC has worked on all types of rail projects across Australia, including:• Rail bridge replacements; • Re-sleepering;• Re-railing;• Emergency works (e.g. bridge and slip

repairs);• Track reconditioning (remove/replace

ballast, sleepers and rail);• Turnouts (replacement, maintenance,

upgrade, yard re-design);• Level crossings (upgrade/reconditioning);• Drainage (improvement, culvert installation);• Transom replacements;• Thermit welding; and;• Re-stressing.

We also have our own Track Protection Officers.

Rail Infrastructure

VEC is a leader in the design and construction of bridges and has built a diverse range of structures. Our expertise, practical engineering approach and equipment are highly regarded industry-wide. We undertake large multiple-span highway bridges to small single span bridges, providing tailored designs and construction methods to suit client needs.Our relationship-based approach to projects means we build and maintain highly valued partnerships, allowing us to continue to provide a high quality and personalised service for our clients.

While we strive for perfection, it is inevitable that challenges will occur on some projects. Our reputation for superior capability comes from our success in overcoming any challenges through innovative design, clever engineering and practical thinking.Not only do we design and construct bridges, our experience also includes the rehabilitation of bridges, such as the Bethanga Bridge across Lake Hume, in Victoria, and the Red Bridge in Campbeltown, Tasmania.

Bridges & Structures

VEC began producing our own Super T-beams in 1996 and was one of the first companies in Australia to make Open Top T-beams.• We have a precast yard in Tasmania;• We are the leading manufacturer in Tasmania of both

prestressed concrete piles & conventionally reinforced concrete piles;

• We have a large Super T mould with latest technology in multi strand stressing & stress transfer from mould to beam;

• Our moulds are 40 and 64 metres long;• We have the capability to produce beams of varying

lengths & depths;• We have the capacity to produce prestressed bridge

planks; and• We specialise in ‘one off’ precast items.

Precast Concrete

In association with Bridge Diagnostics Incorporated (BDI) of the USA, VEC created a fast and accurate method of developing a ‘calibrated elastic model’, which involves:• Developing an elastic model based on the

as-constructed drawings, visual inspection and other documentation of the structure;

• Measuring the strain at up to 48 locations on the structure as a truck or other vehicle of known weight crosses; and

• Calibrating the theoretical model by adjusting (within recognised limits) member stiffnesses and boundary conditions so that the strains and deformations in the model are matched with the test results.

The system can be used to rate all manner of steel, timber, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures.

BASE-SEAL is a polymer based material used in road building and strengthening applications. This product has been used extensively through the U.S. with outstanding results.BASE-SEAL is environmentally friendly:• Due to reduced maintenance demands, there is a

reduction in emissions from plant;• BASE-SEAL is 0% toxic, as it is made out of

Sodium Silicate;• There are no acids or erosive materials; and• It is non-corrosive and non-flammable.

BASE-SEAL is cost efficient because: • There are lower long term maintenance costs;• Due to the improved durability, labour and plant

costs will be reduced;• Roads with wearing surfaces remain stable and

durable for greatly extended periods of time, reducing maintenance costs and preventing repair work;

• It is impervious to water inundation, resulting in a longer life cycle, ultimately reducing maintenance costs;

• It has a wide range of compatible treatment options; and

• It can be combined with lime, soil, cement, fly ash or lime kiln.

VEC operates a dedicated division that is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of all plant, equipment and vehicles. Plant and equipment includes:• Junttan Pile Rig;• Multiple pile capable excavators;• Hi-rail capable vehicles, trucks and rail

maintenance machinery;• Trailer mounted robotic hydro-demolition water

jetting machine;• Fleet of company vehicles; and• Field service truck set up for all on-site

maintenance.

Capabilities include:• Electrical tag and testing; and• Personal safety harnesses and recovery

equipment.
